NUS Alumni Toronto Chapter Year-end Dinner

After nearly two years, NUS Alumni Toronto Chapter held its first in-person gathering on 4 December 2021. The Chapter had last met for Chinese New Year in February 2020, as restrictions on the number of individuals allowed to gather due to the COVID-19 had put all plans on hold. With the number of COVID-19 infections subsiding and a significant percentage of the population with at least two or three vaccine doses, the Chapter met in high spirits at the Jerusalem Restaurant in mid-town Toronto. With nearly 40 alumni in attendance, the Chapter managed to secure a private room for the gathering. The gathering was a huge sigh of relief, and was also filled with happiness as alumni were delighted at seeing familiar faces again. At the rate alumni were mingling with one another, it felt as if they had not met up in decades!

Kicking off the evening, Chapter Chairperson, Mr Tejas Aivalli (Public Policy ‘11) welcomed all alumni with a few words. In keeping with the Christmas spirit, Mr Aivalli urged all alumni to keep in mind of the less fortunate and donate where possible. He also acknowledged the efforts of EXCO members, Ms Jean Lian (Arts and Social Sciences ’97) and Ms Billie Lu (Arts and Social Sciences ’85), who made the dinner possible. The group then enjoyed dinner and the evening ended with a group photo.

NUSS-YST Fundraising Concert - Beyond The Score: Simple Gifts and Springs of Transcendence

The first-ever fundraising concert organised by NUS Society (NUSS) and Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YST) on 25 November raised over $400,000 to date, with matching grant from the Tote Board, to help needy NUS students. The amount raised exceeded the initial target of $250,000. This concert was the eighth instalment of Beyond The Score: Simple Gifts and Springs of Transcendence. Livestreamed on NUSS’ YouTube channel, it garnered 650 views online (as of end November 2021).

Presented by YST students and Vice Dean Associate Professor Brett Stemple and Principal Conductor Jason Lai, the concert featured an hour-long programme of music by American composer Aaron Copland. Guests were brought on a journey across Copland’s songs and his ballet-score masterpiece Appalachian Spring and video excerpts from Martha Graham’s original ballet choreography. Said NUSS President Mr Edward Tay (Law ’92), “We are pleased to serve our alma mater in cultivating the spirit of giving and especially to support needy students. We wish to thank our members and friends of NUSS for their generosity in contributing to this worthy cause.”

Associate Professor Ho Chee Kong (Affiliate Alumnus ’19), Interim Dean of YST commented, “It has been our pleasure working with NUSS on the Beyond the Score series and sharing music through our curated interactive programmes. In this year’s event, we are especially delighted to give further support to NUS students, as we continue to give music greater resonance in the community.” Amid global challenges, the concert sought to provide music of solace, celebration and reflection. The concert also featured a Q&A session where Associate Professor Stemple and Mr Lai answered questions posted to them online.

The amount raised will be channelled towards the NUS Alumni Bursary Endowed Fund, NUSS Golf Section Bursary Endowed Fund and other funds for needy students in NUS.

NUS Alumni Ventures Welcomes You!
From leading an entrepreneurship society to banding together notable NUS Alumni investors, NUS Alumni Ventures (NAV) is determined to make an impact in the Southeast Asia start-up ecosystem by tapping the rich NUS Alumni network.

NAV was founded in June 2020 by a group of alumni with entrepreneurship background in the NUS Entrepreneurship Society (NES). The group identified a gap in the early-stage start up ecosystem, where budding entrepreneurs lacked funding, resources and found difficulty in tapping the rich NUS alumni network. Inspired by Stanford University’s entrepreneurship, NAV was thus born as the first alumni-led angel investment network in Southeast Asia, with the founding batch of 56 members. Despite the challenges faced due to the ongoing pandemic, NAV members adapted quickly under the strategic management of the executive committee, led by President Mr Chen Pinzhang (Engineering ‘21), who was also former President of NES. Within the span of a year, NAV attracted and built a diverse connected network of over 80 NUS Alumni angel investors and partners from scratch to support the organisation’s mission and vision.

Having experienced the trials and tribulations of building start-ups from scratch, some founders have banded together to become venture capitalists or investors in funds and have contributed back to the angel investment ecosystem. NAV has thus created a close-knit network where NUS Alumni angel investors, mentors, entrepreneurs and the like-minded can share their insights and learn from one another to scale their businesses.

To date, NAV has held five Demo Day runs of their flagship Direct Investment Programme (DIP), of which each round shortlisted at least seven carefully selected start-ups that pitched to NAV’s network of angel investors. These start-ups were specifically sourced and analysed from NAV’s team of trained student analysts who undergone rigorous training sessions by experienced mentors. As a result, three start-ups successfully obtained funding. More information on the past DIP events could be found via nav.org.sg/blog.
