For many NUS Science alumni, this year’s Bukit Timah Homecoming had an added dimension as they held a reunion tean in celebration on the Faculty's 90th anniversary.

The reunion was organised by the Chemistry Department with support from both NUS Alumni Relations and NUS Science Dean’s Office. The organisers took the opportunity to showcase the artistic side of their fellow alumni.

NUS' former Registrar, Ms Joanna Wong ('63) of Cantonese Opera fame was a top Chemistry student graduating with a University Gold Medal. Ms Wong was present at the reunion, and fellow alumni enjoyed a video of her performance.

Dr Tan It Koon ('63) has left his mark in both government and quasi-government areas in high level administration, top scientific work and research. Dr Tan is also highly talented in music and art, and his paintings have been exhibited and used in prestigious Scientific Journals. Dr Tan shared on his work in this area during the reunion.

The late Mr Goh Choo San ('69), who was an outstanding chemistry and biochemistry student who graduated with honors, had put Singapore on the world map. He was not only a great dancer, but also as a renowned choreographer. To remember Mr Goh, a video of his work was shown at the reunion. Mr Goh's brother-in-law Mr Daniel Teo attended the reunion, and alumni showed their appreciation for his family's generous gift of the Goh Choon San Science Merit Scholarship.

Other alumni who were present included former chemistry staff and Cabinet Minister Dr Tan Eng Liang ('61); Rhodes Scholar and Olympian, long serving Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Emeritus Professor Huang Hsing Hua ('55); former Science Dean (and also first women Public Service Commissioner) Professor Gloria Lim (55); former Head of Chemistry Department Prof Sim Keng Yeow ('60) and other former staff.

NUS Science Deputy Dean Professor Peter Ho ('96), Head of Department of Chemistry Professor Richard Wong, and Deputy Director of NUS Alumni Relations Ms Florence Neo (Arts and Social Sciences '93) also attended the reunion.

Dunearn Road Hostel (DRH) Reunion Brunch

Returning to Bukit Timah Campus for the Bukit Timah Homecoming after nearly 42 years stirred nostalgic recollections and fond memories of classmates, hostel-mates, lectures and lecturers.

The Homecoming triggered a Dunearn Road Hostel (DRH) Reunion Brunch held one day earlier on 5 July. Many DRH alumni feel that there has always been something special about College Green, previously DRH. The unique ‘six-room block setting’ is situated around an internal court with a majestic rainforest tree, surrounded by ferns that seem to bring about closer interaction among the residents.

At the Reunion held at La Petite Cuisine French Restaurant, Serene Centre, a short walk from the hostel, alumni reminisced about their times together: endless hours studying in the libraries; long nights working through projects; and loud music to keep awake and even louder venting of frustrations! It was a wonderful occasion to meet up and catch up with one another so many years after graduation. The Reunion was a kaleidoscope of personalities and charisma, with a wealth of knowledge and experiences - a dynamic, alluring, magnetic, impressionable group in one brunch. The result was an explosive and electrifying atmosphere like none other! It was a delightful and memorable gathering!

Official Opening of the National University Centre For Oral Health, Singapore

On 5 July, the National University Centre for Oral Health, Singapore (NUCOHS) was officially opened by Minister for Health, Mr Gan Kim Yong.

The 11-storey building will serve as the new National Dental Specialty Centre, synergising clinical services, education and research facilities under one roof. The new facilities within the Centre allows NUS Dentistry to synergise and optimise resources to bring about better services, academic and research.

Students now enjoy a more personalised learning curricula through the innovative use of educational technology to complement conventional methods of training and education. Furthermore, the new improved and enlarged facilities will enable the Faculty to conduct impactful multi-disciplinary research in oral healthcare and population health such as translational research in oral-systemic links, regenerative biology and tissue engineering. The multi-disciplinary research includes the ongoing work between researchers from the NUCOHS, NUH, NUS Yong Loo Lin School Medicine and NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health to better understand the relationship between diabetes and periodontal (gum) disease in the population.

“Apart from such innovations in the delivery of dental education, the Faculty is planning to broaden the clinical exposure of its students beyond the clinics in NUCOHS. The students will have the opportunity to be posted to clinical settings in the community to learn more about the hands-on practice of primary care dentistry,” said Professor Patrick Finbarr Allen, Director, NUCOHS, and Dean, NUS Dentistry.

To meet Singapore’s increasing oral healthcare needs, NUCOHS has the capacity to provide basic and specialised dental health services to nearly 500 patients per day. The 60% increase in capacity will allow provision of better and more accessible care. In addition, the Centre also serves as a multidisciplinary specialist care centre for geriatric patients as well as those with special needs and complex conditions.
