In this special feature, the NUS Baba House presents its Student Ambassador programme, a special programme targeted at secondary and pre-university institutions as part of the Cultural Matching Fund. Over the last summer break, Baba House hosted secondary 2 and 3 Student Leaders from Zhonghua Secondary along with secondary 2 Marco Polo Programme students from Raffles Institution.
The students explored Peranakan Chinese culture through museum-based learning experiences. Beyond its basic history, the programme challenged students into unpacking the origins of the community and the impact of commercialization on the culture today, where they then shared through object highlight sessions they conducted at the end.
Hands-on Object-based learning with Artefacts
One unique aspect of the programme was the opportunity to interact with artefacts from the Travelling Museum Box. Under supervision, students got the rare opportunity to handle antiques and discovered how object analysis can help them understand culture and history in new ways.
