ABS is a leading international classification society devoted to promoting the security of life and property and preserving the natural environment through the development and verification of standards for the design, construction and operational maintenance of marine and offshore assets.

ABS has had a longstanding commitment to invest in the future of the maritime industry. The Scholarship is awarded every year in January or February to deserving students in the Bachelors of Engineering (Civil) with specialisation in Offshore Engineering or Bachelors of Engineering (Mechanical) with specialisation in Offshore Oil and Gas Technology.

The first Gold Medallist of the Singapore Institute of Architects, Mr Alfred Wong Hong Kwok, has designed many of Singapore’s architectural icons, from the National Theatre to St Joseph’s Institution. He also founded the Alfred Wong Partnership in 1957, which made its mark in both the local landscape and further afield. Mr Wong was President of the Singapore Institute of Architects for four years.

The merit-based scholarship is open to Architectural undergraduates at the College of Design and Engineering. 

As CEO of the Housing & Development Board, Dr Cheong Koon Hean oversees the development of well-designed public housing and sustainable smart towns. She has been credited with major urban transformations around Singapore, including Marina Bay, and has been conferred multiple national and international awards. In 2016, Dr Cheong became the first winner of the Urban Land Institute’s JC Nichols Prize for Urban Visionaries.

This Scholarship, established by Dr Cheong, aims to support the cultivation of planning experts in and of Singapore. It supports students undertaking the Master of Urban Planning and the Master of Arts (Urban Design) programmes.

Mr Chin Peng Lim was born in Penang, Malaysia. Educated in English, Mr Chin taught himself the Chinese language and Chinese music, and promoted Chinese culture as a music instructor and performer. Mrs Chin Kim Choo, his wife, had a limited education typical for girls in her generation but being raised by her family inspired and stimulated her learning in all forms.

This endowment is made in their memory by their son, Mr Chin Thoe Chong, an SDE alumnus and director at the renowned firm, DP Architects. Mr Chin Thoe Chong believes in creating spaces that relate to the surroundings and contribute to the local community.

Continental Steel Pte Ltd began in 1982 as a local steel distributor. Today, the company has grown to become a key player in Singapore’s steel industry. The Company stocks and distributes a wide range of structural steel materials in Singapore and around the region. It also provides value-added services such as cutting, drilling, painting and project management services. In celebration of the official opening of its new warehouse complex in 1999, Continental Steel made a gift to NUS to promote construction design in structural steel.

The Continental Steel Scholarship is awarded to academically excellent undergraduate students in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering.

Following a fireside chat with the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering in 2018, Er Tan Seng Chuan and his peers from the Class of 1983 launched a fundraising effort to support a scholarship for deserving students at the College of Design and Engineering. The alumnus of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering is the Managing Director of Tembusu Asia Consulting Pte Ltd.

Headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan, Hermes-Epitek is one of the world’s largest high-tech equipment distributors. It incorporated its Singapore base in 1992 to serve the semiconductor industry here, to the mutual benefit of both countries.

This Scholarship was established as an act of reciprocity for Hermes-Epitek’s 30 good years in Singapore. It is awarded to deserving Singaporean undergraduate and graduate students, preferably undertaking courses related to scanning electron microscopes, such as Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Material Science & Engineering and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.

Infineum is a leader in the field of lubricant and fuel additives. Its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives are in line with the Responsible Care programme. One CSR guiding principle is to support education and research on the health, safety and environmental effects of its products and processes.

Infineum’s scholarships are awarded to third-year and final-year Chemical Engineering students. They will help nurture the brightest young talent and provide them with the necessary skills for their future careers.

Both Mr and Mrs Foo Jixun are based in China, where Mr Foo serves as the CEO of GGV Capital. Mr Foo is an alumnus of NUS and had previously worked with the National Science and Technology Board. After relocating, he took on advisory roles and directorships in several major organisations, including GrabTax and TJia.com. Mdm Serene Siar, who is also an NUS alumna, actively volunteers and runs school programmes such as Character Education, World Scholars Club and the Girl Scouts.

Through the establishment of this Scholarship, Mr and Mrs Foo are delighted to provide support to undergraduate students enrolled in the E-Scholars Programme.

The late Ms Kathleen Koh earned a Diploma in Civil Engineering from the Singapore Polytechnic before obtaining a Master of Engineering Science degree at NUS. By 30, she had earned the affectionate name of Madam Jetty for her noteworthy achievements in this field. Her final job was Managing Director of BMT Asia Pacific.

The endowed Kathleen Koh Seok Hoon Scholarship is awarded to students in the Bachelors of Engineering (Civil) and (Chemical) programmes. Each academic year, it alternates between the two programmes.

Mr Kong Mun Kwong attributes his spirit of volunteerism and community service to his upbringing. What drives him is the traditional values taught at home and his early education which emphasised the spirit of giving and community service, such as “Nation before home and the self”. These values have been reflected in many of his activities throughout his career.

The Kong Mun Kwong Scholarship, an endowed scholarship, was established in recognition of Mr Kong’s gift to SDE. The Scholarship is currently awarded to students who have completed between 20 and 80 modular credits in the Bachelor of Science (Project and Facilities Management) programme annually.

Mr Loh Boon Chye, an NUS alumnus from the Faculty of Engineering, believes that undergoing a Student Exchange Programme (SEP) will add depth and breadth to an undergraduate’s education and experience. The LBC Family Engineering Exchange Scholarship was established to support financially-needy students for SEP. The Scholarship enables students to broaden their horizons and perspectives.

Mrs Lee Li-ming is the wife of the late Associate Professor Lee Kip Lin, an intrepid and independent scholar of the architectural and urban history of Singapore. An advocate for working with ecological processes in design, she believes students who wish to shape the environmental future of the region are best served by an architectural education in Singapore. 

The Lee Li-ming Scholarship for Ecological Design was created to nurture the next generation of landscape architects. It is awarded to deserving ASEAN graduates pursuing a Master of Landscape Architecture at the College of Design and Engineering.

Through the encouragement of his friends, Mr Yuan established this Scholarship to help NUS attract and nurture talented architects. The Scholarship is for first and second-year students in the Master of Architecture programme.

To commemorate its 25^th anniversary in 2017, the Mechanical Engineering Class of 1992 established a scholarship for undergraduates with financial needs. The fundraising effort was led by Professor Ong Soh Khim.

Micron Technology is a world leader in memory and semiconductor technology. In the true spirit of the Micron Foundation, which is committed to the advancement of education and local communities, Micron Semiconductor Asia is supporting the development and growth of young talent and inspiring a passion for engineering among students through the Micron Scholarship.

The Scholarship supports full-time undergraduates for four years of studies in electrical, computer, mechanical, chemical, industrial & systems engineering or material science engineering. One student will be selected each academic year for the scholarship.

Since its establishment in 2002, MSV Systems & Service Pte Ltd has made a name for itself in burn-in reliability testing. It serves clients from various countries including IMA S.p.A (Italy), a world-leading machine designer and manufacturer, as well as Mirae Corp (Korea) in the semiconductor sector. They also work with companies in China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan. MSV is based in Singapore.

The MSV Asia Scholarship is offered to undergraduates at the College of Design and Engineering.

Mr Toh Kim Sai established this Scholarship in honour of his parents, Mdm Ong Guat Aing and Mr Toh Seng Huat, whose unwavering commitment to education greatly influenced their children. The late Mdm Ong was a school teacher, while Mr Toh worked at an architectural firm. Mr Toh Kim Sai, an NUS alumnus and former ASEAN Scholar, is also grateful for the government financial assistance he received during his studies. This gratitude inspired him to become a dedicated NUS Annual Giving donor in his current role as Senior Vice President at CapitaLand Limited.

This Scholarship is open to Architecture undergraduates.

The Professional Engineers Board Singapore (PEB) is a statutory board established in 1971. Its mission is to safeguard life, property, and the welfare of the public by setting and maintaining high standards for registering professional engineers, and by regulating and advancing the practice of professional engineering.

The PEB Scholarships are awarded to students with outstanding academic performance and strong records of participation in co-curricular activities. The Scholarships are awarded annually to first-year and second-year undergraduates in the Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering programmes.

The late Mr Subramanian Doraswamy lyer was a veteran of the Indian Navy, having served between 1951 and 1965. He moved to shore in 1965, working in senior managerial positions in renowned Indian corporations. He emigrated to Singapore in 1971, where he had an illustrious career in the marine industry.

His family has made an endowed gift in his memory. The S D Iyer Scholarship aims to encourage engineering students who excel in Marine Engineering and its related fields, MSc (Offshore Technology).

The Singapore Institute of Building Limited (SIBL) is the professional institute for qualified professionals engaged in the development, construction, and maintenance of buildings. Incorporated in 1981, its members include those in managerial, technical, administrative, research, and academic roles. The Building Estate Management Alumni (BEMA) was formed in 1993 to foster robust links between the School and its alumni. Its activities are organised with close collaboration between members and the School.

This Scholarship is open to undergraduates in the Bachelor of Science (Project and Facilities Management) programme.

Super Galvanising Pte Ltd is a Singapore-registered company founded in 1996. For close to two decades, the company's techniques have protected steel-based projects against environmental corrosion. The firm has been recognised as an outstanding homegrown business at the Spirit of Enterprise Awards, which are given annually to honour and recognise the achievements of local business entrepreneurs.

Super Galvanising Pte Ltd hopes to attract talented students to pursue their degrees and careers in the field of engineering. The Super Galvanising - Engineering Scholars (E-Scholars) Programme Scholarship is awarded to deserving full-time undergraduates under the Global Engineering Programme at the College of Design and Engineering.

Tunnelling and Underground Construction Society (Singapore) (TUCCS) promotes professional development of its members and provides a platform for networking and social interaction among its members by organising various technical seminars, courses, conferences and social events with the aim to upgrade the standard and professional expertise in the tunnelling and underground construction industry in Singapore. The Society is also promoting tunnelling and underground construction research through scholarships for postgraduate students.

The TUCSS M.Sc. (Geotec) Scholarship offers bond-free scholarships to either one full-time student or two part-time students in the Master of Science (Geotechnical Engineering) programme yearly. The maximum value of each scholarship is $8,000 per annum for full-time or $4,000 for part-time students.

Tun Tan Cheng Lock was one of Malaysia’s most illustrious sons, and a political and social leader of renown and repute. A man of high principles and integrity, he inculcated sound values in his children and inspired others by his example and self-discipline. Tun Tan was deeply connected to Singapore. His sisters and daughters lived here and he was director of several Singapore companies including OCBC.

The Tun Tan Cheng Lock Scholarship, established in his honour, supports research in urban and architectural heritage in Southeast Asia. The Department provides another award every academic year for publication and exhibition of the projects. Up to four scholarships are available annually.

As co-founder, Executive Chairman, and Managing Director, Mr Goh Yeow Lian has played a pivotal role in the growth and development of his company Wee Hur Holdings Limited. Its core business has expanded from construction to property development, building dormitories, as well as overseas investments. Wee Hur was among Forbes Asia’s 200 Best Under a Billion (2013 & 2015), and Brand Finance’s Top 100 Singapore Brands from 2012 to 2016.

The Scholarship is offered to undergraduate students in the Facilities Management programme.

Woh Hup (Private) Limited is strongly committed to exercising social, cultural and environmental responsibility. The company supports numerous charitable organisations and implements green practices and processes at its work sites. Recognising the value of higher education, Woh Hup also seeks to support talented individuals by offering scholarships and bursaries.

The Woh Hup Scholarship is open to undergraduates who are Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents, studying in the fields of Civil Engineering or the Department of the Built Environment, and have achieved good academic results. Recipients typically receive this award in their third and fourth years of study.

In 2018, Professor Ho Teck Hua made gift to the Faculty of Engineering to support an endowed scholarship, in memory of his late mother, Madam Teo Cheng Kim.

The scholarship is awarded to students who exhibit academic excellence, high intellectual capacity and integrity. 

Philanthropist Mr Goh Cheng Liang established the Goh Foundation to support programmes that could significantly improve human lives. The Foundation has contributed to many endeavours in education and health, among others. Mr Goh hopes to encourage the community to focus on important societal issues. In particular, he believes that education and research, especially in the field of medicine and health, are pivotal for the nation's future. It is for this reason that he extends his support to aspiring medical professionals.

The Scholarship, supported by the Goh Foundation, is awarded to full-time students at Duke-NUS based on their outstanding academic achievements.

The Lee Foundation was founded in 1952 by philanthropist and businessman, Mr Lee Kong Chian with the aim of supporting educational, cultural, charitable and public organisations. The Lee Foundation Scholarship for Duke-NUS Medical Students aims to inspire and nurture a strong medical talent pipeline for the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre (AMC) to improve patients' lives.

In 1845, the Ngee Ann Kongsi was formed by a group of prominent Teochew leaders from Ngee Ann county in Canton (Guangdong), China. The Kongsi was first established for the welfare of Teochew immigrants. As time passed, many Chinese immigrants settled in Singapore and focused on making sure their children had a good future through education. As such, the Kongsi broadened its focus to cover education, setting up schools and giving out scholarships and bursaries.

These Scholarships established by NUS with generous gifts from Ngee Ann Kongsi are awarded annually to Singaporean and Singapore Permanent Resident (PR) students in financial difficulty and who have excellent academic achievements.

The Shaw Foundation is one of the largest philanthropic organisations in the world. It was set up in 1957 by philanthropists Sir Run Run Shaw and Tan Sri Dr Runme Shaw, in the belief that wealth contributed by society should be returned in generous measure. Since its inception, it has contributed over S$200 million to a myriad of causes. The Foundation believes that innovative approaches to medical education and research are critical to bringing about higher quality of life.

The Scholarship is supported by a gift from the Shaw Foundation. Scholarship candidates must be full-time local or international students of Duke-NUS with outstanding academic records, leadership qualities and a passion for community service.

Since 1884, the historic Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple has been an iconic landmark on Waterloo Street. Apart from its religious functions, the Temple has advanced multiple charities in education, healthcare, social services, and the arts. Helping humankind is the core principle of the Temple, and one way it accomplishes this is by supporting the development of promising medical students. By providing scholarships, the Temple seeks to increase the number of medical doctors who can bring comfort and relief to the ill and suffering.

Supported by the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, this Scholarship is awarded to full-time Singaporean medical students who are financially disadvantaged and have attained outstanding academic achievements.

Her quiet dignity shone through. As a pioneer of children’s social services in Singapore, Madam Alice Goh touched the lives of many, discreetly but indelibly. In memory of Madam Goh, the first wife of one of Singapore’s founding fathers, Dr Goh Keng Swee, her family has set up an endowed fund with the University’s Department of Social Work.

The Scholarship is awarded to deserving students pursuing Undergraduate and Masters studies in social work.

The Taoist College was formed in 2008 and is Singapore’s first formal Taoist institution. It is sponsored by the San Qing Taoist Cultural Centre and supported by Taoist Federation (Singapore). The College is dedicated to promoting the Taoist knowledge and wisdom, and receives strong support from Taoist organisations at home and abroad, research fellows and Taoists across the nation.

The College generously made a gift to NUS in support of the FASS Graduate Scholarship in Chinese Religions. The Scholarship is awarded to recipients whose studies and theses are related to the study of Chinese religions, with the study of Taoism particularly encouraged.

Back in 1986, Dr George Soh set up a clinic providing free dental services for elderly residents of Woodlands Home for the Aged. Today, the orthodontist is still an active volunteer, constantly advocating volunteerism as a way of life for Singaporeans.

Dr Soh is a recipient of the Outstanding Volunteer Award by the Ministry of Social and Family Development. For the NUS Faculty of Dentistry alumnus, the gift of a Social Service Scholarship is his contribution towards grooming more competent and compassionate social service professionals.

Dr Goh Keng Swee played an instrumental role in shaping the course of Singapore’s growth, chief of which was the country’s meteoric economic transformation. He also shored up the fundamentals and foundation for defence and education.

The Scholarship for outstanding PhD students is a fitting legacy to a visionary with a relentless drive for success. Though a hard taskmaster, he was also known as a caring mentor who positively influenced the lives of many.

A pioneer of Singapore literature, Mr Goh Sin Tub (alumnus 1952) wrote with singular compassion and understanding. His short stories, personal anecdotes and poems became his trademark way of capturing and preserving the history of Singapore for future generations.

This gift, made by his widow, Dr Sylvia Goh, provides scholarships for students majoring in Theatre Studies, English Language and English Literature. It ensures that successive generations of Singaporeans continue to be inspired by a beloved writer.

Education has a special place in the Hochstadt family of Singapore. This prompted Mr Herman Ronald Hochstadt to make this gift in commemoration of the Hochstadt family. Mr Hochstadt’s father was a teacher and devoted his career to education. His three sisters were all teachers. Mr Hochstadt himself was Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education. His late wife, Mrs Peggy Wai Chee Leong-Hochstadt who was Chief Librarian of NUS, and Mr Hochstadt were both graduates in Philosophy of the University of Malaya. Their daughter, Karen Lynn, and their son, Erwin Wei-Sung, were also graduates of NUS.

The Scholarship is for students who major in Humanities subjects including English Language, English Literature, Theatre Studies, History and Philosophy.

In life, his generosity and compassion loomed large. The engineer and entrepreneur was known for building enduring relationships and tirelessly lending a helping hand to friends and those in need.

Mr Ian Ferguson continues to touch lives through such scholarships for financially disadvantaged students. This is made possible by the Ian Ferguson Foundation, which he set up in 1974. His wife, Mrs Peony Ferguson, helms the Foundation.

He was an economist who gave up his successful business interests to pursue a higher calling — teaching. The photo shows Dr Chou Kai Ren when he was an Economics lecturer from 1959 to 1962 at NUS’ predecessor institution, the University of Malaya in Singapore. He later served as Head of the Department of Economics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Nanyang University.

Dr Chou’s family made a gift to NUS for a scholarship to support the most promising PhD students during their first year of study at the Department of Economics at NUS.

Under his 20-year stewardship, from 1972 to 1992, the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (now known as the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute) evolved to become a major scholarly institute, focusing on the fields of economics, politics, international relations, sociology and social anthropology.

The Scholarship is yet another tribute in memory of Professor K S Sandhu. It honours his contributions to scholarly exchange within the region, and is awarded to Southeast Asian Studies major students participating in the Semester-in-SEA exchange programme.

Teaching literature was his joy. Former students remember fondly how Dr Maurice Baker taught the subject with heart, soul and wit. He became the first Singaporean to head the then English Department at the University of Singapore in 1972.

Dr Baker, also renowned as one of Singapore’s first-generation diplomats, is passionate about encouraging scholarship in literature. The Scholarship funds students enrolled in the PhD or the Masters of Arts by research programme in the NUS Department of English Language and Literature.

As a global enterprise, Mitsui & Co strives to foster harmony with local communities through international exchange and education.

Every year, three or four NUS students in Japanese Studies are awarded short-term scholarships that enable them to spend six to eight weeks in Japan immersed in Japanese culture.

In a profound show of commitment to the cause of education, 15 members of the Ngiam family collaborated to set up this gift. The Mr and Mrs Ngiam Fook Quee Memorial Scholarship honours the memory of their parents or grandparents. The Scholarship covers the recipient throughout his/her course of undergraduate study at NUS. In a gesture of continuing support, members of the Ngiam family have regularly added to the endowment fund so that the Scholarship now supports two new scholars each year instead of the original one.

The Scholarship is awarded to students majoring in Economics and Social Work.

The Ng Peck Lian and Tan Teng Hian Scholarship is a full-term scholarship awarded to Singapore citizens for undergraduate studies in the Humanities.

It was set up by Mrs Tan Suan Imm (Arts ’61) together with her husband Dr Tan Thian Hwee (Med ’62 ) to honour her late parents-in-law who had always placed a high premium on education. This Scholarship also honours their legacy to their progeny: a legacy of honesty, hard work and frugality as well as the need to care for the needy and less-fortunate in society.

Gifted by an anonymous donor, this term Scholarship is offered to academically outstanding graduate students from Singapore and ASEAN countries who are conducting research in the field of Malay studies.

An anonymous donor established this scholarship for Year 3 Singaporean undergraduates majoring in Malay studies.  The aim of the scholarship is to encourage and support undergraduates in gaining a deeper understanding of Malay studies.

Social workers help people overcome some of life’s most difficult challenges. They deserve the support and gratitude of the community.

The Scholarship is a significant step forward in encouraging practising social workers from voluntary welfare organisations who are undertaking the Master of Social Work (by coursework) programme at the Department of Social Work.

Dr Ong Chit Chung was a grassroots leader who became a Member of Parliament. He was conscientious about helping needy students in the community. An exemplary NUS alumnus, he also taught at the NUS Department of History.

The Scholarship was set up in memory of someone who inspired students and colleagues alike with his commitment to the cause of education. It provides support for honours students majoring in History at NUS.

The Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce Foundation (SCCCF), a subsidiary of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry, contributes to the community development of Singapore. It aims to foster a cohesive, compassionate and culturally vibrant society through the support of meaningful educational, community and charitable causes and projects.

The SCCCF Chinese Studies Scholarship is awarded to Singaporean and Singapore PR undergraduates who have excelled academically at the NUS Department of Chinese Studies.

Mr Tan Kheng Hien (1890-1936), the younger brother of prominent philanthropist Tan Kah Kee, played a significant role in the construction and management of schools in China. His only son, Mr Tan Keong Choon, went on to become an eminent business and community leader in Singapore. The younger Tan received two Public Service stars for his contributions to industry and education. Following his passing in 2015, the Prime Minister expressed the loss of “a pioneer and a leading light of the Chinese Community”.

This needs-based Scholarship for undergraduates in FASS was endowed by Ms Tan Cheng Han in memory of her father and grandfather.

A vibrant homegrown brand, The Cocoa Trees has expanded beyond Singapore into the wider Asia Pacific region. It is in the business of spreading joy through indulgence in one of life’s simple pleasures — chocolates.

The Scholarship is a gift to uplift the lives of young Singaporeans. It is available to undergraduates in the Department of Chinese Studies.

He was affectionately known as “Mr Charity” and ‘Professional Beggar”. For over 50 years, Dr Ee Peng Liang selflessly championed the cause of the needy.

He was the founding member and President of the Singapore Council of Social Service as well as Community Chest. The Scholarship is made possible by the Ee Peng Liang Memorial Fund, set up to perpetuate a charitable spirit and unstinting service to the community. It supports outstanding and financially disadvantaged students pursuing Social Work degrees at NUS.

Mr Wan Boo Sow (1918 – 1992) obtained a Diploma in Pharmacy from King Edward VII College of Medicine in 1948 and set up his own pharmacy in High Street. He then built a business manufacturing the “Ridsect” brand of insecticide. Never forgetting the kindness he received, Mr Wan became a benefactor to the community, especially towards education.

This Scholarship, supported by a gift from his family, is awarded to outstanding Singaporean undergraduate students at the NUS Department of Chinese Studies who are highly proficient in Chinese and English.

Mr Wan Boo Sow (1918 – 1992) faced hardship early in life and this made him compassionate towards people in like circumstances. When he became a successful businessman, he then had the means to help the community, especially in supporting education.

With the intention of encouraging further studies, his family made a gift to the NUS Department of Chinese Studies. This Scholarship is awarded to Singaporean graduate students who are highly proficient in Chinese and English. It is to encourage research on Chinese language, literature, history, philosophy and culture in Southeast Asia.

Dr George Soh Yi-Wei graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry in 1980 and taught in NUS for almost 12 years. Dr Soh is an avid volunteer. For his lifelong community service, he was awarded the Outstanding Volunteer Award by the Ministry of Social and Family Development in 2014.

To ensure that his alma mater continues to groom talented dentists, he made a gift to support a scholarship in 2012. The Scholarship finances the full tuition of up to two academically outstanding second-year and/or third-year students who show active commitment in community service.

To celebrate the Faculty of Dentistry’s 90^th Anniversary in 2019, three alumni and founders of Coden Specialists Pte Ltd, Dr Ho Kee Hai, Dr Ng Fooi Chin and Dr Lee Kwee Jin made an endowed gift to establish the Ho Kee Hai Coden Specialists Scholarship.

Allen & Gledhill LLP has had a long tradition of pro bono work and volunteering in the community and is always trying to reach out to different stakeholders with diverse needs through its multi-faceted corporate social responsibility activities and initiatives.

To commemorate the 110th year anniversary of the firm’s founding, Allen & Gledhill made a gift to NUS for a scholarship in support of financially disadvantaged and academically meritorious NUS Law students. NUS named it the Allen & Gledhill Scholarship.

A rare blend of charitable spirit and cohesive energy distinguishes the NUS Faculty of Law Class of ’86. Their shared values and beliefs spurred thought and discussion on how they could collectively help to harness talent for Singapore’s legal profession.

This led to the launch of a fund to provide scholarships to deserving students who are bright but face financial constraints. The Class of 1986 Scholarship is awarded to second-year to final-year students reading for the undergraduate LLB degree.

The NUS Law Class of 1992 believes strongly in giving back to the community and helping those lacking financial resources to have adequate legal representation. To this end, they are keen to encourage more NUS law students to be innovative in finding ways to serve the general public through pro bono work.

In line with this belief and to mark their 20th anniversary, they donated to a fund to support pro bono initiatives by NUS law students.

As a professional, Ms Ella Cheong is recognised as one of the pioneers in the field of intellectual property in Asia. As a committed individual, she reaches out to help the disadvantaged, giving them access to opportunities to optimise their potential.

The Scholarship is supported by a gift from Ms Cheong for students embarking on her own field of specialisation — intellectual property law, and encourages these students to develop their interest in this area.

Known to his friends and colleagues simply as “Harry”, the late Mr Harry Lee Wee was always armed with an engaging smile and a readiness for mentoring young lawyers. Given his passion for his profession, it is no surprise that this accomplished lawyer also taught at the NUS Faculty of Law for many years.

In memory of Mr Wee, who dedicated himself to community service, his family has made a gift to NUS Law to establish a scholarship for students who demonstrate an interest in and flair for advocacy.

Born in India, Mr K K Menon came to Singapore in 1952 at the age of 26. For the next 35 years, he worked in the government service. Some years after his retirement, he returned to India, where he lived till his death in 2012.

The family established a scholarship in his name, to support academically outstanding students, in order to honour a man who treasured education and who believed Singapore had given him wonderful opportunities

Her zest for life and love for travel enabled her to connect with people from all walks of life. Today, her memory lives on through the Kathryn Aguirre Worth Memorial Scholarship.

The Scholarship for outstanding Law graduates of the University was established by NUS to honour the American attorney with White & Case LLP, who was on board the ill-fated Silk Air flight MI 185 on 19 December 1997. The Scholarship was founded by White & Case, Standard Chartered Bank and numerous donors in Singapore and New York. Kathryn Aguirre Worth was an attorney with White & Case LLP in Singapore, a graduate of Georgetown School of Foreign Service as well as UCLA School of Law.

Madam Kwa Geok Choo led a life of many ‘firsts’. The first Asian woman to graduate with a First Class Honours degree in Law at Cambridge University (in 1949), she later co-founded Lee & Lee, which became one of Singapore’s biggest law firms. Born in 1920, Madam Kwa broke boundaries from a young age, but with quietude and dignity, which were to remain the hallmarks of her personality. She participated in the tumultuous birth and progress of a nation as the wife of Singapore’s first Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

The Kwa Geok Choo Scholarship at the NUS Faculty of Law recognises excellent law students annually.

Exactly one year after she lost her life in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, a scholarship was set up in memory of lawyer Ms Lo Hwei Yen. The NUS Law alumna was the first Singaporean to fall victim to international terrorism.

The international law firm of Stephenson Harwood made a gift to NUS for a scholarship awarded to academically brilliant students in their final-year of studies, in honour of a friend and colleague whose life was tragically cut short. Her memory now lives on and continues to make a difference in people’s lives.

Indonesia’s Riady family has been a longstanding advocate of the transformative power of education and its ability to improve lives and society. The Riady family’s philanthropic values are evident in many ways, one of which is the prestigious Riady Scholarship, which is named to recognise their commitment to education.

The Scholarship is supported by the Riady family and provides financial support for academically outstanding students from the Indonesian community who aspire to pursue their graduate studies at the NUS Faculty of Law.

Mr Wee Chong Jin was a man of many firsts. Among them was being the first Singaporean and Asian to head Singapore’s Supreme Court Judiciary when he was appointed Chief Justice in 1963. He retired in 1990, holding the record as the longest serving Chief Justice in the Commonwealth.

Mr Wee was renowned for his integrity, discipline and unswerving commitment to the community. To honour these attributes, the family of the late Chief Justice supports a scholarship for outstanding students who demonstrate dedication to community and charitable causes, as well as display a spirit of sportsmanship and collegiality.

Mr Leong Mun Sum is the Managing Director of local pharmaceutical company Leung Kai Fook Medical Co which manufactures Axe Brand Universal Oil—a product found in many Singaporean households. A trained pharmacist, Mr Leong graduated with a master of Pharmacy from the University of London in 1963. He is active in public and community service, serving as a Trustee of Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital
and as Chairman of Henderson Secondary School Advisory Committee.

Mr Leong made a gift to NUS to give back to society and in support of academic excellence in the field of Pharmacy. In recognition of his gift, the Leong Mun Sum Scholarship is awarded to pharmacy students who have demonstrated meritorious results.

Dr Lawrence Chia is a former Professor and current Special Advisor (Alumni Relations) at the Faculty of Science. His teaching and research have been recognised by professional awards around the world. He was awarded the Distinguished Science Alumni Award in 2014.

Sir Percy McNeice held many key posts in the early days of Singapore’s civil service. His appointments included the Secretary of Chinese Affairs, President of the Singapore Municipal Commissions, President of the City Councillor, as well as Head of the Singapore Improvement Trust – the forerunner of today’s HDB.

He established the Social Welfare Department – now known as the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports – in 1946, and went on to become its first Secretary. Sir Percy McNeice was also a founder and President of the Singapore Family Planning Board in 1959. He was knighted in 1957 and passed away in 1998.

The Percy McNeice PhD Scholarship has been established in his loving memory by his grateful son. It is open to full-time postgraduate students specialising in biodiversity research at NUS.

Through prudent investments and astute leadership, rubber magnate and banker Tan Ean Kiam accumulated his fortune, co-founding and serving as managing director of Oversea Chinese Bank. He gave generously to charitable causes, contributing to Sun Yat Sen’s nationalist movement, and funding schools and transport infrastructure in his home province of Fujian, China.

In 1956, his family set up the Tan Ean Kiam Foundation to channel his estate towards social and educational causes. The Foundation contributes towards charities and educational institutions; the Tan Ean Kiam Graduate Fellowship in Science is open to both Singaporean and Singapore PR graduate students.

Sheares Hall (SH) is fondly known as the family hall of residence at NUS. Established as the Dunearn Road Hostels (DRH) in 1952, the Hall was renamed Sheares Hall (SH) in 1982 after its relocation to the Kent Ridge Campus. The Hall serves as a family away from home for its residents, creating strong bonds between its residents past and present. In 2009, a group of passionate DRH/SH alumni began fundraising to establish the DRH/SH Alumni Endowment Fund to enable financially-challenged students to stay in the hall.

The Fund supports the DRH/SH Alumni Scholarship, which recognises hostel residents who excel academically while actively contributing to the hostel.

The Dunearn Road Hostels (DRH) was established in 1952 as a cluster of semi-detached five-room houses in College Green. Among DRH’s first residents were the overseas undergraduates of the University of Malaya located in Singapore. In 1977, DRH celebrated its Silver Jubilee by raising funds from its alumni to give back to the residents at the hostel. With the funds raised, the DRH Silver Jubilee Award was initiated in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the hostel.

The Silver Jubilee Award is awarded to encourage and recognise outstanding residents’ contributions to the hostel.

Building Communities.’ to its global real estate portfolio comprising integrated developments, shopping malls, serviced residences, offices and homes in over 130 cities in more than 20 countries. The Group is committed to cultivating talents to contribute to its business and, in the process, serve the communities in which it operates. One initiative is the CapitaLand Scholarship for the Master in Public Administration and Management programme, a Chinese language based programme tailored for senior government officials and state-owned enterprise executives.

The Scholarship is open to candidates from all nationalities who seek to acquire the knowledge and skills required for today’s globalised environment.

Taiwanese shipping tycoon Dr Chang Yung-fa left behind a successful business empire and a rich legacy with his passing in January 2016. For the billionaire, wealth was always a means to do good and to bring about a positive change in people’s lives. In 1985, Dr Chang established the Chang Yung-fa Foundation which is committed to promoting education and many other efforts to give back to society.

The Chang Yung-fa Scholarship is awarded to promising but financially disadvantaged students at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. This Scholarship is supported by an endowment from Dr Chang Yung-fa, and testifies that his benevolent legacy of doing good lives on.

Ripples are wonderful because they become so much larger than the source that causes them. The ripple effect of positivity is a key tenet of the Kewalram Chanrai Group, which believes that all contributions, no matter how small, will positively impact lives and emanate through the community.

Starting as a family business over 150 years ago, the Group itself has experienced the ripple effect of growth to become a diversified enterprise today. The Scholarship, supported by a gift from the Kewalram Chanrai Group, is available to students at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, paving the way for positive change.

Though a multimillionaire businessman, Dr Lee Kong Chian led a simple and humble life. Called “a superlative friend to education,” he was the first Chancellor of the University of Singapore, NUS’ predecessor institution.

Established in 1952, Lee Foundation has made transformative gifts and generous contributions to educational and research institutions. The Scholarship, supported by a gift from the Lee Foundation, is available to financially disadvantaged students at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, and is a testament to Dr Lee’s legacy of prioritising and promoting education.

As a young man, Dr Li Ka-shing witnessed tragedy and suffering and this set in motion the establishment of a charitable foundation in his later years. The Li Ka-shing Foundation is dedicated to empowering people and fostering change for a more caring society, especially through education.

In keeping with its philosophy, the Foundation made a gift to support full-time students studying at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. The Scholarship is awarded to deserving full-time students from China, Hong Kong, India and ASEAN at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, who aspire to contribute to the advancement of society.

Indonesia-born Mr Oei Hong Leong is an investor, property tycoon and philanthropist who has engaged the community as a friend and benefactor. He supports diverse causes in the hope of shaping lives for the better.

Mr Oei has been appointed an honorary citizen and economic advisor of several Chinese municipal governments such as Hangzhou, Ningpo,Yantai,Foshan and Jinzhou. The Oei Hong Leong Scholarship, established by NUS with generous gifts from Mr Oei, is offered to students who are citizens of China.

Education opens doors and equips an individual for life. This is the underlying premise that drives the Riady family, renowned for their philanthropy, to sustain an unyielding focus on supporting and sponsoring educational needs and programmes. After all, the well-being of individuals translates into the well-being of a nation.

The Scholarship, supported by the Riady Family, is available to students who are citizens of Indonesia and studying at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.

“Rodamas is a part of your life, more than you know.” So says the Indonesia-based corporation involved in different aspects of business, from distribution to printing and packaging.

Corporate social responsibility also occupies an important position at the heart of the company. This is a joint scholarship supported by a gift from PT Rodamas Company to the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, offered to students who are citizens of Indonesia.

The brand promise of Sequislife, a major player in Indonesia’s insurance industry, is “For a better tomorrow.” Just as it strives to deliver a better tomorrow for customers, it also makes it a point to bring about a better future for individuals in need of support.

The joint Scholarship, established with a gift by PT Sequislife Company to the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, is open to students who are citizens of Indonesia.

An Indian conglomerate headquartered in Singapore, Spice Global operates in the sectors of telecom, finance, entertainment and technology. It adopts a globalised business perspective for an interconnected globalised world.

Seeing the synergy with its global vision, the company has supported NUS for the establishment of the Spice Global Scholarship for students who are citizens of India, enrolling in the Master in Public Policy and Master in Public Administration programmes.

The Stamford brand is synonymous with luxury hospitality. It boasts a portfolio of prime hotels and investment properties in Australia’s key cities.

Stamford Land’s reputation for top-notch quality and unrivalled services has been earned by staying customer-focused and employee-focused. Such is the steely determination that the company seeks in students for the scholarship it has supported NUS to establish, which is available to citizens of Australia and New Zealand.

As an advocate of innovative investor relations initiatives, Mr Mark Lee Kah Hui has chartered hundreds of roadshows and investor conferences throughout Asia. His vast experience has cemented his reputation for being resourceful and reliable. Mr Lee serves as the Managing Director of Asia Fund Space, an online portal that connects fund managers and listed companies. This platform facilitates connections between over 6,000 professional investors and more than 300 listed companies in China, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

This Scholarship is open to undergraduates majoring in Real Estate studies.

This Scholarship is established in honour of Ms Emily Chin and Mr Eugene Wong. Ms Chin, an alumna of NUS Business School, has over two decades of experience in the energy and petrochemical industries. She is currently the General Manager for trading commodity with a major energy company, based in Singapore. Her husband, Mr Eugene Wong, is the founder and managing director of Sirius Venture Capital, a venture investment firm. He also serves on the Boards of several public-listed firms and government bodies. Both of them met while studying for their undergraduate degrees at NUS Business School.

This award is a full-term scholarship, enabling the School to attract the best and brightest incoming undergraduates.

Kwai Fong and Raymond are both alumni of NUS Business School where they had first met. They have been married for more than twenty years and have two teenage children. Kwai Fong is happily retired while Raymond is still working hard towards that goal. Since graduation in 1990, he has always worked in the fund management industry. As Raymond was a recipient of scholarships during his university days, they understand and appreciate the importance of financial aid in supporting higher education.

They made a gift to establish this Scholarship to support academically outstanding, incoming Singaporean undergraduates at the NUS Business School.

Born in East Java, Indonesia, Dr Mochtar Riady has accomplished many things in his lifetime. The founder and Chairman of global conglomerate Lippo Group started out running a humble bicycle shop in the 1950s before making his mark in the banking industry. He transformed Bank Central Asia from a small bank into Indonesia’s then largest privately-held bank. Today, the Lippo Group is reputed for its global real estate investments.

The Lippo Group made a landmark gift to NUS Business School in honour of Dr Riady, who is also a firm supporter of education. NUS established the Business Dean’s – Mochtar Riady Scholarship to encourage academic excellence in its business students and to honour a great business leader and philanthropist.

Mr David Gay Teow Chuang sits on the board of Bencoolen Holdings. Although he devotes most of his time to the family business, which involves purveying traditional Danish ice cream and dealings in properties, Mr Gay also has a passion for travel, photography, and Chinese art.

He established this Scholarship to support undergraduates at the School of Business who face financial constraints.

Mr Dhanabalan was a pioneer in the Economic Development Board and was instrumental in the establishment of the Development Bank of Singapore before he entered politics in 1976. He served as Minister for Foreign Affairs, National Development, Trade and Industry, Culture and Community Development. Mr Dhanabalan also served as the Chairman of Temasek Holdings and was a board member of GIC. Notably, he held the longest tenure on the Council of Presidential Advisers.

This scholarship was set up by the NUS Business School to honour Mr Dhanabalan for his dedicated leadership on its Management Advisory Board from 2009 to 2017. It is open to both undergraduates and graduates.

The Victor and William Fung Foundation was established in 2006 to mark the centenary of the Fung Group, one of Hong Kong’s largest logistics, trading, and retail entities. The Foundation was named after brothers Victor and William Fung, who turned their family firm into a modern enterprise. It serves to develop leaders and ideas through its support of students, educational institutions and think-tanks.

The Fung Scholarship, funded by a donation from the Victor and William Fung Foundation, supports students who demonstrate leadership qualities and active community involvement, going on exchange at overseas universities and Chinese nationals on exchange to NUS Business School.

Mr Ian Ferguson, a civil engineer and successful entrepreneur from the UK, spent much of his working life in Asia. In 1974, he had the foresight to establish the Ian Ferguson Foundation to perpetuate his legacy of giving back to the local community. The Foundation was activated in 2001 upon his passing. The first gifts were made in 2003 upon receiving the monies from his estate. A decade later, Mr Ferguson’s generosity and compassion continues to touch lives. The Ian Ferguson Scholarship helps students-in-need further their education, and acts as a stepping-stone for their greater achievements.

This Scholarship serves financially needy Singaporean undergraduates in their second year of study, who have demonstrated academic aptitude.

A small shop that initially sold kimonos in Japan back in 1886 eventually grew to become a household name in East Asia a century later. This influential department store is known as Isetan, and it selected Singapore as the location for its first overseas venture in 1972. In 1981, the Isetan Foundation was established to fulfil the company’s philosophy of giving back to the community. It has since supported numerous charitable organisations and endowed scholarships at various local tertiary institutions, primarily focusing on business studies.

The Isetan Foundation Scholarship is awarded based on financial need and academic merit.

The late Mr Lam See Chiew, J.P., BBM, was a successful entrepreneur and a man of diverse talents. As a grassroots leader, he was active in the Tanjong Pagar constituency. As a philanthropist, he gave time and monies to healthcare and educational causes. He reached out to others through his work in clan associations, hospitals and school advisory councils.

To honour his values and spirit of giving, his daughter, Professor Lam Swee Sum established the Lam See Chiew Memorial Scholarship in Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy. The Scholarship is open to candidates in the NUS BBA, BBA(Hons) and MBA programmes with demonstrated interest and contributions in the social entrepreneurship, non- profit or philanthropy sectors.

The late Professor Leong Siew Meng was a distinguished member of NUS Business School serving as Marketing Department Head, Vice Dean and Interim Dean. Prof Leong was known and respected in Singapore and internationally for his dedication to marketing research and education. With an intuitive and sharp business sense, his lessons were always insightful and memorable. He passed away in September 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer. Prof Leong is remembered fondly for his tenacity, passion and wit.

Those who knew him rallied to honour a friend, colleague and mentor by donating generously to the Leong Siew Meng Memorial Fund established at NUS Business School. This Scholarship is awarded to third year students specialising in marketing who have achieved academic excellence.

Mr Melvin Poh and Ms Francine Lee are alumni of the former Building & Estate Management Department of NUS. They are the founders of Fission Group, a property development company in Singapore established in 2006. They have benefited from their education and would like to give back to their alma mater.

Besides donating a medal and prize to the Department of Real Estate, Mr Poh and Ms Lee have also generously donated a scholarship. In appreciation of their gift, NUS established the Melvin Poh and Francine Lee Scholarship for real estate undergraduate students. The Scholarship is tenable for four years.

The Mizuho Corporate Bank is part of the Japan-based Mizuho Financial Group, one of the largest financial service providers in the world. It has had a presence in Singapore for more than forty years. To support and reward talented and deserving undergraduates, Mizuho Corporate Bank signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the NUS Business School to establish endowed scholarships and bursaries, with the potential for other collaborations. To date, its bursaries and scholarships have supported more than 45 students at the NUS Business School.

The Mizuho Scholarship is awarded to third-year students with good academic results.

Mr and Mrs Wu Jieh Yee lived long and productive lives. Mr Wu’s business began in Hong Kong and survived the Second World War, when he, with his family members, relatives and employees, was forced to move from place to place in China to avoid the Japanese invaders. Despite these overwhelming challenges, Mr Wu persevered and after the war, his business prospered, thanks to his keen business acumen.

The Mr & Mrs Wu Jieh Yee Memorial Scholarship was established by their daughter, Po Kin, to honour them. Since its establishment, she and her family have regularly added to the endowment so as to support two students per year. It is awarded to students who demonstrate leadership and community involvement and wish to specialise in Finance.

Mr Ng Guan, a member of Singapore’s Pioneer Generation, was a dried-goods merchant at Ellenborough Street in River Valley for more than three decades, retiring in 1985. In bringing up his children, he inculcated in them the importance of a good education and the same values of integrity and hard work that enabled his family to thrive, instilling in them a sense of responsibility and a positive attitude to life. He passed away at the age of 85 in January 2009.

This Scholarship was established in his memory, for Filipino and Singaporean students who are in their second year of study and have performed well academically. Mr Ng had an affinity for the Filipino youths as his youngest son lived in Manila for many years.

The NUS Business School Mandarin Alumni (MA) was set up in 1992 to strengthen ties and foster friendships among the Mandarin-speaking alumni of the School. As part of their 25th anniversary celebrationss in 2017, the MA established this Scholarship for Business undergraduates.

Perennial Real Estate Holdings Limited (“Perennial Real Estate Holdings”) is a Singapore mainboard- listed integrated real estate and healthcare company. It focuses on large-scale mixed-use developments and has a presence in China, Singapore, Malaysia and Ghana. Perennial Real Estate Holdings is also a healthcare services owner and operator focused predominantly on China.

In 2015, Mr Pua Seck Guan, Chief Executive Officer of Perennial Real Estate Holdings and NUS alumnus, made a generous gift on behalf of the company to the Department of Real Estate to groom the next generation of leaders for the real estate industry. The Scholarship was initially opened to first-year students and with a gift top-up in 2016, will be extended for the duration of the recipients’ four-year course.

The Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce Foundation (SCCCF), a subsidiary of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry, contributes to the community development of Singapore. It aims to foster a cohesive, compassionate and culturally vibrant society through the support of meaningful educational, community and charitable causes and projects.

The SCCCF Business Scholarship is awarded to academically outstanding Singaporean and Singapore PR undergraduates pursuing business studies, with the objective of grooming future pillars of society

Dato Sri Prof Dr Tahir had humble beginnings. Through sheer hard work, pure passion and an entrepreneurial spirit, he became a successful businessman and now helms a major Indonesian conglomerate, the Mayapada Group. Dr Tahir is also a dedicated philanthropist, believing firmly in education as a means of nurturing the most precious of resources — human talent.

Supported by a donation from Dr Tahir, NUS established the Tahir Financial Scholarship which encourages academic excellence among the financially disadvantaged Business students.

Indonesian businessman and philanthropist Dato Sri Prof Dr Tahir helms the Mayapada Group, one of Indonesia’s largest conglomerates, which he built up through hard work and with an entrepreneurial spirit. The Group has offerings in financial services, healthcare, tourism, retail, media and aviation. A firm believer in education, Dr Tahir is committed to developing and investing in intellectual capital and human talent. He established this Scholarship to benefit Indonesian students and enhance relations between the people of Indonesia and Singapore.

This Scholarship supports financially disadvantaged Indonesian undergraduates throughout their entire course of study at NUS Business School.

As a co-founder of Cambridge Industrial Trust Management in 2005 and Viva Industrial Trust in 2012 (now merged with ESR-REIT), Mr Wilson Ang has extensive experience in REIT management, industrial property investment and consultancy. Mr Ang, an alumnus of NUS (Estate Management), is married to Ms Joyce Chong.

This Scholarship is open to undergraduates, with a preference given to financially needy students. 

Ms Winnie Cheah founded Win Advisors in 2001 and has since inspired numerous individuals in the insurance industry through her training and consultancy services. Being a highly sought-after speaker, Ms Cheah firmly believes in empowering people to take control of their lives.

As an undergraduate, Professor Joseph Cherian was able to attend some of the top universities in the US with the help of scholarships and loans. At that time, financial aid for international students was scarce, but he earned a scholarship from the Kuok Foundation, which helps fund the education of needy Malaysians. He was the founding director of NUS Business School’s Centre for Asset Management Research & Investments, and has a wealth of experience in the finance industry.

To give back in their turn, Professor Cherian and his wife, Yanfang (Emma), have set up this Scholarship to support Singaporean undergraduates, with a preference for those who are financially needy.

Mr Jixun Foo (’92 and ’97) has a desire to promote entrepreneurship as he believes that this will help Singapore compete on a world stage. As education is an important tool for shaping students’ development, Mr Foo, together with his wife, Mrs Serene Foo, made a gift to the University Scholars Programme (USP) as a small way of encouraging the entrepreneurial and risk-taking spirit in our students.

The Jixun and Serene Scholarship for outstanding USP students is supported by a generous gift from this alumni couple.

Prominent businessman and philanthropist, Dr Lee Kong Chian came from a humble background. He was awarded a government scholarship for his studies and excelled academically until China’s political turmoil put a stop to his educational pursuit. Dr Lee returned to Singapore and soon became a successful businessman. Dr Lee was known for his generosity, simplicity and humility. The final part of his life was devoted to supporting education through the Lee Foundation.

The Lee Kong Chian Graduate Scholarship is the University’s most prestigious award for PhD candidates who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership and a commitment to service. It is awarded to up to five recipients each year.

The late Mr Lee Kuan Yew was the first Prime Minister of Singapore, recognised as the nation’s founding father, and acknowledged for guiding the country “from third world to first”. As one of Fitzwilliam College’s notable graduates, Mr Lee took a double-starred first class honours in Law at Cambridge University.

Swimming coach extraordinaire, the late Dr Chan Ah Kow, was noted for his experimental training methods. Although he had little swimming experience, he trained his children extensively. His tireless and dedicated efforts enabled them to dominate the South East Asian swimming world in the 1960s and 1970s. He was named Coach of the Year for three years running.

This endowed scholarship was established by NUS, with gifts received from the Medical Alumni Association, family and friends of the late Dr Chan Ah Kow. The Scholarship is awarded to NUS Medicine students who excel in both the academic and sports arenas.

Dr Chew Beng Keng, born into a humble family, was the top student at his school in the 1950s. A scholarship paved the way for his medical studies. He has received many awards for his philanthropy, including the Friend of MCDS Award and the Service to Education Gold Award.

His children, Ms Chew Gek Khim, Ms Chew Gek Hiang and Mr Chew Kwee San, have made an endowed gift to establish a scholarship in honour of his 80th birthday. The Scholarship supports financially needy undergraduates at NUS Medicine.

The late Professor Ernest Steven Monteiro was a renowned doctor who started mass vaccination in 1958 to protect children and young adults from polio. The pioneer in preventive medicine helped to wipe out beri-beri with Vitamin B-1 and eliminated diphtheria among children. He also served as the Ambassador of Singapore to Cambodia, and then to the USA and Brazil.

His wife, through an endowed gift, established the E S Monteiro Scholarship in his memory to provide deserving students from NUS Medicine with financial assistance to pursue their education.

ESR Group (ESR) is a leading logistics real estate company. Headquartered in Hong Kong, ESR’s network spans Australia, India, Japan, the People’s Republic of China, Singapore, and South Korea. The Scholarship award covers tuition fees and research costs for four years for the development of nanomedicines; specifically in nano-drug delivery, nano-imaging, and nano-diagnostic technologies.

Madam Gan Guat Ching enjoyed a successful career as a civil servant and educator. Having experienced the dedicated care provided by the doctors and nurses at NUH and Alexandra Hospital, Madam Gan decided to give back to future generations of doctors by supporting a medical scholarship at NUS Medicine. She said: “By making a gift to the University, you can help generations of students long after you are gone. It is a good legacy to leave behind.”

The Gan Guat Ching Medical Scholarship provides financial assistance to deserving, underprivileged students studying at NUS Medicine.

Mr James Loh Sinn Yuk, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of asset management company JL Capital Pte Ltd, and his wife, Ms Natalie Cheung Yuk Pok, consider themselves lucky for being able to receive a proper education despite coming from modest backgrounds.

The couple, who believe in giving and helping those in need, made a gift to NUS to support the James and Natalie Loh Scholarship which provides deserving medical students the financial support needed to pursue their education at NUS Medicine.

Sixty years ago, the Jen family arrived in Singapore from Hong Kong and found success. The family is now helping Singapore’s next generation to move forward in life. Dr Frank Jen and Mrs Daisy Jen made a gift to NUS to honour his parents’ devotion to the family and their belief in providing a college education for all their children. He says, “Singapore is where my father found success, and I have faith in NUS delivering results.”

The Jen Family Scholarship supports four eligible full-time NUS Medicine students.

Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho temple started out as a temple dedicated to the Chinese Kuan Yin. Over time, other deities were added. Amongst them is Hua Tuo, a doctor of the Han dynasty who is the Chinese patron saint of medicine.

The Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple Graduate Research Scholarship is awarded to Masters and PhD students pursuing research work at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

The Lee Foundation was established in 1952 by the late Dr Lee Kong Chian and has since become Singapore’s largest private charitable foundation. The Foundation channels the majority of its gifts towards educational and learning institutions, changing numerous lives for the better.

The Lee Foundation has given generously to student financial aid, encouraging students to achieve excellence and elevating those in financial difficulty. NUS established the Lee Foundation Nursing Research Scholarship which is awarded to a Singaporean full-time PhD candidate who is also a Registered Nurse with full licensure from the Singapore Nursing Board.

Parkway Pantai believes in nurturing the next generation of medical leaders who will play an integral role in shaping the future of medicine in Singapore. Parkway Pantai group has established the Mount Elizabeth-Gleneagles Scholarship to assist NUS Medicine students who are committed and driven to succeed in the medical profession but who may be constrained financially.

This Scholarship benefits up to 16 students each year. Each bond-free Scholarship will cover a portion of the recipient’s tuition fees at NUS Medicine.

Jakarta-born Mr Ong Sin Seng founded precision manufacturing firm, First Engineering, in 1979 after relocating to Singapore. He felt strongly about helping the disadvantaged and was generous to individuals in both his native and adopted countries. His wife, Mdm Lim Song Kie, keeps her late husband’s philanthropic spirit alive by establishing this scholarship and providing support for geriatrics research at NUS Medicine.

The scholarship is offered to medical students at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, with the aim of supporting the healthcare community in Singapore and beyond. 

The Tanoto Foundation Scholarship is part of the Foundation’s BEACON Programme, which aims to holistically develop the generation of leaders as future-ready global citizens who meaningfully contribute to their communities and countries. The programme comprises structured leadership development training, opportunities for experiential learning, networking and community service, in addition to tuition grants via the scholarship.

The Tanoto Foundation is an independent family philanthropy organisation founded by Sukanto Tanoto and Tinah Bingei Tanoto in 1981. Based on its core belief that quality education accelerates equal opportunity, the Tanoto Foundation focuses on making an impact in three areas: Improving learning environments, developing future leaders, and supporting medical research and sciences.

Mr Thio Kok Foe and Madam Choo Kim Beng are the proud parents of Dr Della Suantio Lee, renowned philanthropist and founder of the D.S. Lee Foundation. Through her foundation, Dr Lee supports a myriad of causes ranging from healthcare to community projects.

Dr Lee made a gift in memory of her parents to support students at the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies. The Scholarship was established by NUS to encourage two students every year who are Singaporean or Singapore PRs, in years one to three who are financially strapped, and have achieved academic excellence while being actively involved in extra-curricular activities. Priority may be accorded to children of Police Officers, if applicable.

In 1993, the Dentistry Class of 1971 generously raised funds to establish the BDS 71 Scholarship. The Scholarship is awarded to final-year undergraduates with outstanding performance in the Third Professional BDS Examination. The recipients also have good academic and clinical performance and are involved in extra- curricular activities.

Lawyer and philanthropist Mr Koh Choon Joo, fondly known as Mr C J Koh, was a reticent man of many talents – as adept in legal principles as he was in the works of Aristotle and Socrates and the world of art. Mr Koh’s quiet wisdom inspired great loyalty among his clients, who would often refuse to consult anyone else in his absence. His success benefited many as Mr Koh gave generously of his time and money.

Mr Koh made generous gifts to NUS to build and develop the Law Library and to support students and faculty. The C J Koh Scholarship, named in honour of his gift, is awarded each year to undergraduate law students with excellent academic results.

As governor of the Straits Settlements from 1887 to 1893, Sir Cecil Clementi Smith was a capable and well-respected administrator with a deep knowledge of the Chinese community and languages. Sir Cecil was acting governor of the Straits Settlements in Singapore, and was best known for quelling Chinese secret society activity. He was a firm advocate for education, establishing the Queen’s Scholarships in 1885 to help outstanding Singapore students pursue higher education in England.

Upon his retirement in 1893, the Chinese community established the Cecil C Smith Scholarship in honour of his contributions. Today, the Scholarship is awarded to first-year undergraduates with excellent academic results.

The Daisy & Robert Pang Scholarship was established in 1986 supported by a donation from Mrs Daisy L Pang.

The Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students with excellent academic results. To date, the Scholarship has enabled recipients to participate in research programmes, afford specialist textbooks and access other learning opportunities.

With a 155-year presence in Singapore, Dentons Rodyk is the Republic’s oldest and one of its largest law firms. In April 2016, the firm combined with Dentons, creating the dominant global law firm in the Pacific Rim with more than 85 offices in the region. The firm has a long history of contributions to various causes, through gifts and pro bono work in the community.

This Scholarship was established in 1987, both as a means of promoting legal education and giving back to the University which had trained so many of the firm’s lawyers. The Dentons Rodyk & Davidson LLP Scholarships are awarded each year to outstanding final-year law undergraduates.

The Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited opened its first branch in Singapore in 1877 and was one of the earliest banks to do so. In 1977, the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation Singapore (now HSBC Singapore) established a centenary scholarship fund to commemorate an illustrious century of operations in Singapore.

Over the years, the financial services firm has supported this Scholarship with annual donations. Today, it is awarded to undergraduates with excellent academic results.

The Information Technology Management Association (ITMA) is a professional association that brings together a community of successful and forward-looking IT leaders who make a difference to the IT industry in Singapore. It strives to be a centre of excellence for IT leadership, harnessing IT management best practices for the success of businesses and nurturing new generations of CIOs.

To support the next generation of IT professionals, the Association made a gift to establish this Scholarship. The award is given to outstanding undergraduate students in the Computing (Honours) programme.

The late Professor Jacob Phang joined NUS in 1979. He served as CEO of NUS Enterprise from 2002 to 2006. He was a keen advocate of technology entrepreneurship and believed in exposing students to the world of start-up companies. This advocacy led to the establishment of the NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC), which now operate in various entrepreneurial hubs around the world.

In his honour, his family presented a gift to NUS, which established the Jacob Phang Memorial Scholarship. The Scholarship is awarded to engineering undergraduates who have completed an NOC programme, and is administered by NUS Enterprise.

The late Mr Koh Yen Bok, chairman of Sumatra International and the Asiatic Enterprises, passed away in 1976, leaving behind his wife and three children.

The Koh Yen Bok Scholarship was established in his memory, as an award for students with excellent academic results.

Built in 1884 by the devotees of the Goddess of Mercy (Kwan Im or Guan Yin), the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple has a venerable history as one of Singapore’s oldest Buddhist temples, functioning as a refuge during the Japanese Occupation. Today, in addition to being a place of worship, the Temple continues to serve as a centre of philanthropy.

The University established the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple Scholarship which is awarded to undergraduate students with excellent academic results. The Scholarship is administered by the Office of Financial Aid.

After making his fortune in the business world, Dr Lee Kong Chian consistently sought ways to give back, establishing the Lee Foundation in 1952 to channel interest from his profits and properties back into the community. Since then, the Foundation, one of Singapore’s largest private charitable organisations, has given to numerous educational institutions and charitable causes.

Established from gifts from the Lee Foundation, the Lee Kong Chian NUS Global Merit Scholarship is awarded to all-rounded individuals who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership qualities.

Mdm Chan Heng Kee’s love for learning led her to attain an education in diverse fields, from a master's in Medical Research from the then-University of Singapore to a Law degree from London. Her lifelong studies ranged from American Military History and Archaeology to Chinese studies. Mdm Chan left a career in the Civil Service to volunteer full-time, touching the lives of many with her humility and compassion. She has also contributed greatly to the welfare of cats.

This undergraduate Scholarship was set up in honour of Mdm Chan by her husband, Mr Leow Mah Seng, an NUS alumnus. 

In 1961, the esteemed Canadian finance scholar Professor Leslie G J Wong arrived in Singapore under the Colombo Plan to help set up the accounting and business administration courses at the Universities of Malaya and Singapore. Prof Wong, who returned to the University of British Columbia in 1964, was also a consultant to several business enterprises in Canada. For his service to the University of Singapore, he was conferred an honorary degree in 1967.

After he passed away in 1968, friends of the former Visiting Professor Leslie G J Wong donated to the Leslie Wong Memorial Scholarship. The Scholarship rewards outstanding second-year undergraduates reading Business Administration.

Medical doctor and public intellectual Dr Lim Boon Keng championed a number of social reforms, including education for women and the eradication of opium. He later became involved in the rubber, timber and banking industries, co-founding the Oversea- Chinese Bank, precursor to the Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC).

The Lim Boon Keng Scholarship is supported by donations from his estate and from his daughter, Mrs Ena Teh. The Scholarship is awarded to deserving second-year medical undergraduates.

In the early years of Singapore, a dedicated generation of workers laboured to lay a strong foundation for the city-state’s growth. Mr Kwa Soon Siew was part of this generation and spent much of his working life with Chung Khiaw Bank, an establishment founded to serve ordinary citizens. He and his wife, Mabel, were role models for their children, encouraging them to pursue their dreams.

Their children, Associate Professor Kwa Chong Guan ’68 and Ms Kwa Kim Hwa ’73, made a gift to NUS to honour their memory. The Mabel & Soon Siew Kwa Scholarship will support full-time Singaporean undergraduates, with preference given to those from the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, NUS Business School and Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.

Mr Max Lewis, General Manager and Director of soft drink and beer giant Fraser & Neave Limited for 15 years, was a man of exceptional and diverse abilities. He started as a trainee at the beverage firm in 1931, rising through the ranks to become its General Manager in 1955, a position he held till he passed away in 1970.

In 1991, Mr Lewis’ wife, the late Mrs Gracia Diana Margharita Lewis, set up the Max Lewis Scholarship Fund, in memory of her late husband. It became a registered Charity in Jan 1996. The scholarship is awarded to outstanding students for the pursuit of higher education of any discipline in any University, Polytechnic or Institute of Higher Learning. This Scholarship is available only to Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents (PRs).

Following an illustrious accounting practice career in the UK, Dr Ian Peter Windle began a second career as lecturer in accounting at NUS in 1986. In his last few years, he supported the MILK (Mainly I Love Kids) Fund – a charity serving disadvantaged children and youths. He bequeathed a sizable portion of his estate to MILK, which in turn made a gift to establish the MILK- Ian Peter Windle Scholarship at NUS.

This bond-free Scholarship is awarded to financially needy undergraduate students who excel academically, with preference given to students at the NUS Business School (Department of Accounting) and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (Department of Social Work).

Ms Ng Kim Neo bestowed this Scholarship to her alma mater with a sense of gratitude for the way her education empowered her career. The Economics graduate (1963) worked at the Monetary Authority of Singapore, and subsequently at the Singapore Trade Development Board (now IE Singapore) where she rose to become a Senior Director involved in international trade negotiations. Ms Ng has been a steadfast donor to various charitable organisations over the years.

This Scholarship is open to undergraduates of any nationality, with a preference given to those pursuing Economics.

For over hundred years, the National University of Singapore has graduated many illustrious cohorts whose achievements made the University proud and renowned globally. These alumni have not forgotten their alma mater and have generously, together with their friends, supported the University with donations, time and skills.

This Scholarship was established in 2007 by Hi-P International Limited, Orchard Maritime Services, and the estate of the late Quah Poh Lian to honour the University’s broad and diverse alumni network. The Scholarship is awarded to undergraduates with excellent academic results.

Professor Ooi Jin Bee was a prolific and distinguished scholar with a long association with the University of Singapore’s Department of Geography. Prof Ooi was an expert in the tropical geography of Southeast Asia. He authored and edited key texts and articles in many local and international journals, including the Singapore Journal of Tropical Geography published by the Department of Geography.

The contributors to and publishers of Singapore Journal of Tropical Geography made a gift to establish this Scholarship in honour of Professor Ooi’s long and successful association with the Journal. The Scholarship is awarded to outstanding undergraduate students reading the honours course in Geography.

Shook Lin & Bok LLP is a leading and well-established Singapore law firm serving banks and financial institutions, multi-national corporations, state- owned entities, regulatory bodies and other clients. Owing to its strong regional focus, the Firm earned recognition for its cross-border expertise and in-depth experience across the major markets in Asia. As part of its core values, the Firm is very involved in the local community work through several pro bono initiatives.

In 1989, the Firm made a gift to establish the Shook Lin & Bok LLP Scholarship. Since then, two scholarships have been awarded each year to second-year and third-year law undergraduates with excellent academic results.

The Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) is an internationally renowned business organisation and the apex body of the Chinese business community in Singapore. Its large membership network actively supports business, education, and community development. The Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce Foundation was incorporated in 1966 as a means to contribute to society. The SCCCI has long been a patron of the Chinese Studies Department at NUS.

For their 110th anniversary, SCCCI established a scholarship for undergraduates in the Department of Chinese Studies and NUS Business School.  

Sir Song Ong Siang was a lawyer and prominent citizen in the Straits Chinese community. Educated at Raffles Institution and Cambridge University, he became the first Chinese barrister admitted to the Singapore Bar. He subsequently co-founded the legal firm Aitken & Ong Siang. Sir Song had a lifelong commitment to education, particularly towards educational opportunities for women. He helped set up the Singapore Chinese Girls’ School and advocated for women’s rights in society.

After Sir Song Ong Siang passed away in 1941, his wife Lady Helen Song made a donation to the then-University of Malaya to establish this Scholarship in his memory. The Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students with excellent academic results.

The Sri Solidarity Jaya Scholarship was established to encourage greater unity and solidarity among Malaysians. The Scholarship aims to help young Malaysians gain a well-rounded education at NUS.

Supported by a gift from the Yoonhee Annhow Foundation, the Scholarship is awarded to Malaysian students pursuing their undergraduate studies at the University.

Dr Stephen Riady is the Executive Chairman of OUE Limited and holds directorships with Auric Pacific Group, as well as Main Board-listed Lippo, Lippo China Resources, and Hongkong Chinese Limited. As a citizen of China, Dr Riady served as the Hong Kong Affairs Advisor in the 90s. His extensive service includes civic engagements around the world, which have earned him numerous awards, including the Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the EY Asean Entrepreneurial Excellence Award.

This Scholarship is open to undergraduates who aspire to be entrepreneurs. Upon graduation, recipients have the opportunity to apply for seed funding to start their own ventures, provided they demonstrate viable business proposals.

In 1973, the Mitsui Bank (later renamed the Sakura Bank) established this scholarship with an initial donation, and continuously supported it with new gifts. In 2001, the Scholarship was renamed the Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation Scholarship following the merger of Sakura Bank with Sumitomo Banking Corporation.

Part of the Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, the Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation has a deep commitment to environmental and social causes for the long-term future of society. The Scholarship in its name is awarded to Honours undergraduates in the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

The late Mr Tan Jiak Chuan was the grandson of prominent philanthropist Mr Tan Kim Seng, and was responsible for running the day-to-day business of mining firm Kim Seng & Co. He carried his task with quiet expertise and earned the respect and recognition from the local Chinese community.

The Tan Jiak Chuan Scholarship was established by a gift bequeathed by the late Mr Tan Jiak Chuan. It was historically administered by the then- Department of Education before being transferred to Raffles College in 1940. Today, the Scholarship is awarded to first-year undergraduate students with excellent academic results.

Born into a poor family in Fujian, China, Mr Tan Lark Sye came to Singapore as a teenager, beginning at the bottom rung in a rubber factory run by tycoon Mr Tan Kah Kee. He later set up rubber company Aik Hoe, becoming a prominent industrialist and community leader. As President of the Hokkien Huay Kuan, he advocated for and gave generously to educational causes, proposing the establishment of Nanyang University.

In his honour, the Aik Hoe Group of Companies made a gift to support undergraduate students with excellent academic results, awarded as the Tan Lark Sye Scholarship.

In 2016, the family of business leader and philanthropist Mr Tan Siak Kew made an additional gift to extend the existing scholarship fund and set up a new scholarship in honour of their late patriarch. Mr Tan, a vocal advocate of education in Singapore was instrumental in pushing for the formation and accreditation of Nanyang University, one of NUS’ predecessor institutions. He served as Chairman of the Nanyang University Council.

This Scholarship is awarded to outstanding Law and Economics students; one to two scholarships are awarded each year.

Though he left a teaching position for a career in business and the public service, Mr Tan Teck Chwee remained a staunch supporter of education. He was Chairman of Jurong Shipyard and Jurong Engineering from 1971 to 1988, and later Chairman of the Public Service Commission where he displayed remarkable skills as a judge of character recruiting Singapore’s finest minds into public service. He passed away in 1988 after a battle with leukaemia.

That same year, Jurong Shipyard and Jurong Engineering established this Scholarship in memory of their late Chairman, Mr Tan Teck Chwee. The Scholarship is awarded to outstanding undergraduates reading Civil Engineering.

Mr Tham Kai Shui (1920-2018) arrived in Singapore from Guangdong in 1935. Starting as a tailor’s apprentice, he was poorly paid and often hungry. However, his talent and hard work led him to establish his own business, Excelsior Tailor, which attracted a distinguished clientele. Although Mr Tham was self-educated and took English night classes, all six of his children went on to graduate from university. Despite never returning to China, Mr Tham had a strong desire to help students in China in overcoming poverty through education.

This Scholarship was set up by his daughter, alumnus Dr Tham Kah Poh, with a preference for students from China. 

The late Dr Pakir Singh, who had earned several degrees in History, Law, and Human Resource Development, had a diverse career as a university teacher, journalist, and visionary in the hotel industry. He played a key role in starting SHATEC and served as the Secretary-General of the ASEAN Tourism Association. Dr Pakir was recognised as a strong advocate for the underprivileged. His wife, Professor Anne Pakir, is also an alumnus who believes in lifelong education. She currently holds the position of Associate Professor at the Department of English Language and Literature, and serves as the Associate Vice President at the Office of University and Global Relations.

This undergraduate Scholarship is endowed by colleagues and friends of Professor Anne.

The Scholarship, one of the earliest in records, is awarded to Chinese scholars.

Toyota has, since 1990, established operations in Singapore through its local business entity, Toyota Motor Asia Pacific Pte Ltd or TMAP, which now oversees its operations in Asia Pacific. Commercial objectives aside, TMAP also embarks on many Corporate Social Responsibility efforts to reach out and offer assistance to the local community. One such effort is the establishment of this Scholarship to support the development of promising talent not only in engineering-related fields but also those from design and environment.

The Scholarship is awarded to outstanding undergraduate students from the Faculty of Engineering and the School of Design and Environment.

Mr Vincent Lim Kian Huat is a Managing Director with the UOB Group and a founding director of the joint-venture fintech Avatec.ai. Originally from Malaysia, Mr Lim married Mdm Tan Sew Ngo and relocated to Singapore with her in 1994. He subsequently built a distinguished career across Asia. 

During his time as an accounting student at NUS, Mr Lim received support from the Kuok Foundation scholarship. In recognition of the assistance he received, he has made this bequest to similarly help Malaysian students overcome the financial challenges associated with pursuing tertiary education in Singapore. This undergraduate Scholarship is based on merit, with a preference given to financially needy students.

Banking leader Dr Wee Cho Yaw, who is renowned for growing his family business into the distinguished United Overseas Bank (UOB), has long been a supporter of education, serving on the NUS Council from 1980 to 2000. Dr Wee, who received an honorary doctorate from NUS in 2008, also served on various chambers of commerce and industry, and received the Public Service Star for his contributions to boards and agencies such as the Economic Development Board.

In 2015, UOB set up an endowment in Dr Wee’s name to assist financially needy undergraduates. Recipients of the Wee Cho Yaw Future Leaders Award should be full- time undergraduates who also meet the University’s financial aid and merit-scholarship criteria.

Headquartered in Singapore, Wilmar International is one of Asia's leading agribusiness groups. It has over 300 manufacturing plants and an extensive distribution network covering China, India, Indonesia and some 50 other countries supported by a global workforce of approximately 90,000 employees. Both Wilmar International and its co-founder, Mr Martua Sitorus Thia Seng Hap, have made contributions towards the bursary funds.

The Scholarship is open to undergraduates based on their academic merit. 

Mr Yong Fong Lim was born in 1920 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and operated a small business out of his house providing photography services. He witnessed how education positively changed the lives and economic conditions of those lucky enough to complete their education after the Second World War. Determined to give the best to their children, Mr Yong and his wife, homemaker Madam Wong Yok Hin, devoted their resources to educate their children.

Their children, Mr Yong Voon Chen (SDE, ’90) and his siblings, donated to this endowed Scholarship to honour their late parents’ beliefs and to appreciate their personal sacrifice, hardwork and determination. The Scholarship is open to all NUS undergraduates and is tenable yearly.

The late Professor Jacob Phang joined NUS in 1979. He served as CEO of NUS Enterprise from 2002 to 2006. He was a keen advocate of technology entrepreneurship and believed in exposing students to the world of start-up companies. This advocacy led to the establishment of the NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC), which now operate in various entrepreneurial hubs around the world.

In his honour, his family presented a gift to NUS, which established the Jacob Phang Memorial Scholarship. The Scholarship is awarded to engineering undergraduates who have completed an NOC programme, and is administered by NUS Enterprise.

Mr Tan Ean Kiam was a man of humble beginnings who rose to become a leading businessman in Singapore during the early 1900s. He donated to numerous welfare projects and schools, promoting education of all kinds to develop leaders for the nation.

The Tan Ean Kiam Arts Award at the NUS Centre for the Arts (CFA) is the first arts awards platform in NUS, offering seven awards each year to honour the best of our 22 arts groups, recognising artistic excellence and significant contributions to the arts and arts management among the NUS community. The awards advance the artistic development of awardees, as well as strengthen the arts as a pillar in the NUS community, enhancing student life as a rich experience in NUS’ holistic education.

A woman of many firsts, Dr Gloria Lim was the first female Dean of the Faculty of Science, the first woman to head the Department of Botany, the inaugural director of the National Institute of Education and the first woman to serve on Singapore’s Public Service Commission.

The National University of Singapore Society (NUSS) is Singapore’s foremost graduate club with over 16,000 members from NUS and other universities. NUSS aims to promote the interests of its members and the University while fostering a lifelong relationship between them.

Mr Seah Cheng San and his wife, Ms Siak Ching, are active contributors and donors to the University, for which they have been honoured with the NUS Distinguished Service Award for their contribution to NUS and the wider community.

Ms Elaine Low comes from a family that has supported various charitable and philanthropic causes including disaster relief, research and education. In 2011, Ms Low personally donated $1 million to help the victims of the earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan. Currently the Executive Director of Manhattan Resources Ltd, which is engaged in a wide array of logistics services, Ms Low possesses both business acumen and the heart to be of service to the community.

This Scholarship represents her family’s wish to provide talented students at NUS UTown with the opportunity to pursue their interests and uncover their potential. They hope these students become contributing members of society in future.

Mr Jixun Foo (’92 and ’97) has a desire to promote entrepreneurship as he believes that this will help Singapore compete on a world stage. As education is an important tool for shaping students’ development, Mr Foo, together with his wife, Mrs Serene Foo, made a gift to the University Scholars Programme (USP) as a small way of encouraging the entrepreneurial and risk-taking spirit in our students.

The Jixun and Serene Scholarship for outstanding USP students is supported by a generous gift from this alumni couple.

The iconic temple is part of Singapore’s history. Established in 1884, the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Singapore and has been steadfast in providing succour to the sick and disadvantaged in society for many decades.

This Scholarship supports students studying and residing in the Residential Colleges at NUS UTown. The Residential Colleges that NUS has set up have the potential to make university education transformative and the deserving students are nurtured to be future leaders and benefactors of society.

They are highly respected for their contribution to many good causes, regardless of race, language or religion. Dr Della Lee was named one of Southeast Asia’s Heroes of Philanthropy by Forbes magazine. Her late husband, Dr Lee Seng Gee, Chairman of Lee Foundation, inherited the charitable spirit of his father, rubber king Dr Lee Kong Chian, and maternal grandfather Mr Tan Kah Kee.

This Scholarship is awarded to students with leadership qualities who contribute to the educational journey and residential college life at NUS UTown. This enables today’s generation to dream big and overcome challenges for a better tomorrow.

The Shirdi Sai Worship Centre is a charity that provides care for the aged, destitute, and sick, as well as orphans, widows and children, without any form of discrimination or distinction. It also supports other charitable organisations using surplus donations received.

This scholarship is offered to outstanding undergraduates of any nationality, with consideration given to their family's financial circumstances. Recipients are encouraged to give back by contributing to the scholarship fund of another financially needy student once they start earning their own income.

Former Chairman and CEO of Micron Mr Steve Appleton advocated education as the foundation for strong communities. He walked the talk, giving time and money to schools and charities all over the world.

The Micron Foundation was established under his leadership in 1999. The Micron Foundation seeks to build strong communities and promote robust education in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Mr Appleton’s life and vision continues to be honoured in many ways, such as this UTown Scholarship that provides talented individuals access to an interdisciplinary education at NUS UTown.

The company provides consultation services to small-and-medium enterprises as well as business owners on corporate restructuring, corporate benefits, risk management and succession planning, as well as estate planning.

Established in 1845 by a group of prominent Teochew leaders, the Ngee Ann Kongsi has a strong track record of furthering the cause of education, healthcare and service for the less fortunate in the community. Its philanthropic initiatives are carried out regardless of ethnicity, language, religion or social status.

The Scholarship enables talented students to benefit from NUS UTown academic programmes and collaborative learning community.

Founded by Dr Tin Ka Ping in 1982, the Tin Ka Ping Foundation supports education and other charitable endeavours in the Greater China Region. With his vision of “from the society, for the society” and “better education for the next generation”, the prominent industrialist continues to serve as Honorary Chairman in the Foundation. Since 2010, the Foundation has adopted a new and professional governance structure while focusing on the quality improvement for “teaching” and “learning” through school-based programmes and scholarships.

The Tin Ka Ping Foundation Scholarship is proud to support students’ access to the pioneering educational opportunities at NUS UTown.

Professor Saw Swee Hock was President’s Honorary Professor of Statistics in the National University of Singapore and Professorial Fellow in the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. He was well-known for his outstanding achievements in academia as well as for his extensive philanthropic work, particularly in the area of tertiary education. In NUS he supported gold medals, bursaries, scholarships, professorships, and the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health. Aimed at uplifting the skills of public health professionals, this Scholarship, up to three per year, is open to Singaporean students pursuing the full-time Master of Public Health degree.

This postgraduate Scholarship is supported from a gift provided to NUS by Professor Saw, and is named in honour of his generous contribution.

The scholarship is named after the TL Whang Foundation which was established with donations by Mr Whang Tar Liang and his family.  Mr TL Whang is the younger of two brothers who built up the Lam Soon Group, a major consumer goods company in Southeast Asia with operations in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.  The Foundation supports causes around health, education, the arts and environmental sustainability in Singapore and the region.

The Scholarship supports the most deserving candidates from Thailand and Vietnam, in particular candidates who demonstrate potential for community impact.

Madam Wu Yu Lin was a retired educationist and founding director of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Regional Language Centre. A pioneer in bilingual education, she won numerous accolades for her work, including being made a Justice of the Peace in 1989. She enjoyed a close relationship with her father, the late Dr Wu Lien-Teh, a distinguished Cambridge-trained physician and public health scientist who made significant contributions in China to stop the terrifying pneumonic plague that claimed more than 60,000 lives in Manchuria in 1910.

This Scholarship is made available for full-time students at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health. Recipients should be either Singapore Citizens or PRs and preferably but not exclusively medically-trained.

Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple is dedicated to Guānyīn, the Chinese Goddess of Mercy. In 2009, it made an endowed gift to the NUS School of Computing to establish the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple Computing Scholarship Fund for undergraduate School of Computing students.

The Scholarship is awarded to first-year students joining the School to pursue their first degree. The Scholarship is awarded to a maximum of three recipients per academic year.

The family of Mr Lim Joo Hock has made a gift to set up the endowed Lim Hong Chin Memorial Scholarship fund for School of Computing undergraduates. The Scholarship is awarded in memory of Mr Lim Joo Hock’s late father. The School uses the yearly distributable income from the investment of the endowed fund to award one scholarship annually.

The Scholarship, which is available to Singaporeans and Singapore PRs who demonstrate academic excellence and sound character, is tenable for the entire undergraduate course duration in the School.

Dell Technologies provides the most comprehensive and innovative portfolio in the industry, from the edge to the core to the cloud. It enables smart factories and connected manufacturing, accelerating Industry 4.0.  The established Scholarship is available to full-time graduate students enrolled in NUS’ Master of Science (Industry 4.0) programme.

An endangered palm tree native to tropical rainforests lends its name to a scholarship for students embarking on environmental studies. The Bataua produces fruits which are a rich resource for food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. At Yale-NUS, the Scholarship is supported by a gift from the Bataua Scholarship Fund.

Mr David Marshall (1908-1995) served as Singapore’s first Chief Minister but is best known as the founder of the Worker’s Party. Previously a top criminal lawyer, Mr Marshall became Singapore’s Ambassador to France, Portugal, then Spain, and after retiring, acted as a consultant for Drew and Napier.

The late Mr Harry Elias, one of Singapore’s most renowned trial lawyers, spearheaded the fundraising for this Scholarship. It is offered to students accepted into the double-degree programme in Law offered by Yale-NUS and the NUS Faculty of Law.

After moving to Singapore from Indonesia in 1958, Mr Henry Kwee Hian Liong founded a family business which grew into a sprawling property and hospitality company under the Pontiac Land Group.

In recognition of their enduring ties to Singapore and to honour their patriarch’s legacy, the family initiated the Scholarship for less privileged Singaporeans at Yale-NUS College.

The Scholarship at Yale-NUS College, which gives preference to female applicants, aims to provide women with an equal opportunity in education and tools for self-help and empowerment.

The legacy of giving was set in motion by renowned rubber king Dr Lee Kong Chian. The Lee Foundation, Singapore’s largest family-run foundation, is synonymous with charitable and philanthropic contributions towards the underprivileged, education and the arts.

Constantly evolving to meet emerging needs, the foundation is today still a forerunner in helping the disadvantaged access the lofty heights of education. Its Yale-NUS College scholarship is one of many initiatives.

A Singapore success story, Prima celebrated its 50th anniversary with a gift for the future. Singapore’s first flourmill — which has diversified into other businesses — launched a scholarship for deserving students to experience a Yale-NUS education, which draws on the finest intellectual traditions of East and West.

Prima’s belief is that students who benefit from a quality education will be inspired to give back to society when they have acquired the means to do so.

Ms Sharon Ann Eravelly (Shaz) had just completed her Master’s thesis in criminology when disaster struck ending her life prematurely. Shaz was a people person passionate about human rights and social justice. Though busy with her academic life, she found time to pour her life’s energies into working with the homeless, the marginalized and the victimised. She inspired volunteers, many much older than her, to support her and to continue with work she had started.

This Scholarship was established to help students pursue their dreams and eventually give back to society, like Shaz did.

Property magnate Dr Stephen Riady’s philosophy is that people’s lives can only be improved when they are empowered through education, knowledge and life skills. In particular, he sees liberal arts education as the education of the future in an increasingly complex world.

The Scholarship underscores Dr Riady’s support of educational causes to develop human potential to the fullest, regardless of socio-economic status.

Tizian Carl Eduard Schenker was born in 1995 and spent most of his life on the move with his family. His years in Singapore, from 1998 to 2001, were the happiest. Tizian was mainly home-schooled. Diligent, well-read and particularly adept at analysing problems, his interests ran the gamut from science and history, to finance and philosophy, and he hoped to attend Yale-NUS College. Tizian passed away in Zurich in 2016, three days shy of his 21^st birthday.

This undergraduate Scholarship is established in his memory by his family and friends.

He is a trailblazer who started developing large-scale tourism projects in China years before modernisation transformed it into an economic powerhouse. Such is the daring and innovative spirit that Mr Wu Hsioh Kwang hopes to see in young people.

The Scholarship is his gift to students to leverage on education as the foremost enabler in the global race, where the best learning experience opens hearts and minds.

Mr George Raymond Zage’s many philanthropic activities range from the Chairmanship of the Singapore American School Foundation Board to working with the global non-profit, Room to Read. Mr Zage also served several years with the Investment Committee of NUS as a co-opted member. The American-born businessman hopes to foster ties between the United States and Singapore, his new home.

This merit-based Scholarship is open to past and present students of the Singapore American School who have been admitted to Yale-NUS College.

Mr S R Nathan, the former President of Singapore, was a man of the people. In his six decades of service to the nation, from medical social work to the country’s president, he kept his community consciousness intact. After his presidency, Mr Nathan established the S R Nathan Education Upliftment Fund with the Community Foundation of Singapore. The S$10 million endowment fund was set up to help financially disadvantaged students in Singapore achieve their full potential.

The Fund made a gift to NUS in support of the S R Nathan Music Scholarship which is a merit-based scholarship for Singaporean students from the wind, brass, percussion, composition or recording arts areas for the duration of their undergraduate programme.

Founding Director of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music Dr Steven Baxter passed away in July 2010. He was known for his spirit of giving towards the students as well as for his thoughtfulness, quiet humour, strong sense of collegiality and deep commitment.

The Steven Baxter Memorial Scholarship offers enhanced merit-based scholarships to Year 3 and/or Year 4 students. The Scholarship harmonises perfectly with Dr Baxter’s ambition for the Conservatory’s students to achieve international excellence.
