NOC Alumni Bursary (2021)
Entrepreneurial talents come from all backgrounds. All students, regardless of their financial status, should be given an opportunity to embark on their NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC) journey.
Aligned with its belief in nurturing the entrepreneurs and change-makers of the future, the NOC Alumni Bursary was established to encourage more NUS undergraduates to embark on NOC Programme and to develop their potential to become entrepreneurs of tomorrow. The following sub-named awards were established.
NOC ALUMNI - CAROUSELL BURSARY
A group of donors established the Bursary in honour of Carousell, a smartphone and web-based marketplace for buying and selling new and second-hand goods. With support from NUS Enterprise, Carousell was founded by students who were inspired by this start-up idea when they were at NOC in Silicon Valley. The donors hope this Bursary will give financially needy students a chance for overseas entrepreneurship exposure and encourage the growth of more innovative start-ups.
NOC ALUMNI - CHONG KOK KEONG & TAN SWEE SAY BURSARY
Mr Chong Kok Keong and his wife, Mdm Tan Swee Say are advocates of a well-rounded education and the importance of overseas experience. The eldest son, Mr Chong Zhi Cheng, is an alumnus of NOC Silicon Valley. This bursary award supports their hope of giving more students the opportunity to broaden their horizons.
NOC ALUMNI - CHONG ZHI CHENG BURSARY
NOC Silicon Valley alumni, Mr Chong Zhi Cheng was inspired to moot the idea for the NOC Alumni Bursary Fund after meeting two NUS students who did not apply to NOC because of their financial situation. This Bursary supports financially needy students, so they too may benefit from NOC programmes.
NOC ALUMNI - GARAG3 BURSARY
This Bursary is a tribute to the NUS-Garag3 incubator (2008-2012) which housed many startups under its wings - amongst them were Patsnap, Zopim and Zimplistic. Through this gift, the founders of these start-ups hope that the next generation of NOC founders will carry the entrepreneurial torch into the future.
NOC ALUMNI - HAPPY MARKETER BURSARY
Happy Marketer was one of the hundreds of companies that saw life thanks to NUS's various programs supporting entrepreneurship, business planning and innovation. From 2005 to 2019, the firm was founded, scaled and eventually acquired under the leadership of two NUS graduates - Rachit Dayal & Prantik Mazumdar. The founders met in NUS, attended the NOC programme, joined the Start-up@Singapore business plan competition, and eventually hired key team members from NUS. Their gift hopes to support the spirit of NUS students finding opportunities and persevering even when no clear path exists.
NOC ALUMNI - NUSS BURSARY
As the foremost graduate club, NUSS has many community-driven programmes which owe their success to the strong support of their members. The Bursary is created from the seed funding from NUSS to empower more financially needy students to embark on a life-changing experience through NOC programmes.
NOC ALUMNI - SEAH & SIAK BURSARY
Mr Seah Cheng San and his wife, Siak Ching, an NUS Board of Trustee (BOT) and Yale–NUS board member have been active contributors to NUS. NOC ALUMNI - STARTUP@SINGAPORE BURSARY
This gift from NOC alumni is named in honour of a nationwide business plan competition called Startup@Singapore that was held from 2000 - 2014. The donors of this award were involved in the planning of the competition, and many subsequently embarked on NOC Programme. Similar to how the programme promotes youth entrepreneurship, the donors hope this Bursary can empower financially disadvantaged youth with exposure to entrepreneurship and overseas experience.
NOC ALUMNI - STAY HUNGRY STAY FOOLISH BURSARY
The Bursary is named after Steve Jobs' commencement speech, “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish”. The anonymous donor, who was inspired by his speech, hopes to encourage aspiring entrepreneurs to follow their hearts and pursue what they believe in.
NOC ALUMNI - TK LOO BURSARY
Mr Loo Tze Kian established this Bursary in the belief that holistic education is important, as well as how overseas exposure can expand one’s perspective. He hopes this Bursary will enable more students to achieve that vision, by embarking on NOC programmes.

Mr Tay runs TPS Group, a provider of Fiduciary, Corporate and Business Development Services.
NUSBSAA – LEE YAN MEMORIAL STUDENT EXPERIENCE AWARD
“NUS alumnus Benny Lee, who crafted a successful career in international marketing, believes in the benefits of cross-cultural learning experiences. Impacted by two such learning experiences gained in NUS, he was motivated to think that students who qualify for exchange programmes should not be deprived of doing so if they have (family) financial challenges. With that, he expounded and started the NUS Business School Alumni Association Student Experience Fund to help students gain the once-in- a-lifetime opportunity presented to them. In turn, he hopes to inspire more to give back to their alma mater as they resonate with the learning gained when studying in NUS.”
NUSBSAA – PAUL YAP MEMORIAL STUDENT EXPERIENCE AWARD
“I have benefited from the educational system in Singapore. I see no better way to show my gratitude than to put a bit of what I now have to help others who are in financial need for their education. What better vehicle than through my alma mater, NUS?”

Tahir Student Exchange Award (2009)
Indonesian magnate and philanthropist Dato Sri Dr Tahir started from humble beginnings. The son of a Surabaya clothing-shop owner, he started the Mayapada Group as a garment and textile manufacturing business. Today, it is one of Indonesia’s largest conglomerates. Dr Tahir is a firm believer in education. By supporting this Student Exchange Award, he hopes the good relations and understanding between the people of Indonesia and Singapore may be enhanced.
Each Award supports financially disadvantaged Indonesian students at the NUS Business School going on exchange, needy undergraduates at the School going on student exchange at partner universities in Indonesia, or financially needy Indonesian undergraduates from partner universities who are on student exchange at the School.
Tan Mingwei Global Community Service Grant (2010)
The late Ms Tan Mingwei was a medical student at Cambridge University, UK. She spent several of her holidays serving on volunteer trips to Botswana, Nepal and Taiwan, and was inspired by the experiences she had. Ms Tan also actively volunteered at home in Singapore, where she taught handicapped archers. Sadly, she passed away in an accident at the young age of 20.
In her memory and to promote the spirit of volunteerism, the Tan Mingwei Global Community Service Grant was set up for students who undertake meaningful community work in developing countries and hopefully be inspired by the work just as she was.
