Singapore Exchange Group Chief Executive Officer Loh Boon Chye (’89) is a big believer in gratitude and giving. He appreciates the people and places that made him who is he today — his alma mater NUS and its professors. Hence, he constantly contributes to the University whenever he can.A mover and shaker of the financial world, Mr Loh said: “I truly believe in the joy of giving. To quote the Chinese proverb ‘Yin Shui Si Yuan’, I think it’s important that ‘When you drink water, you think of its source’. Achievements, progress, growth and development — all have sources of help and support. That’s why I believe in giving back.”

He graduated from the NUS Faculty of Engineering, where the proverbial fountain of wisdom provided him with the smarts and skills to navigate life and the workplace. Starting out at the Monetary Authority of Singapore, he rose through the ranks to take on leadership roles at banks. Today, he is the head of the Singapore Exchange Group.

In order to express his appreciation, Mr Loh supports a variety of causes at NUS. He has set up study grants to ensure no one gets left behind, such as a student bursary and a fund for exchange programmes. He has also made gifts to projects that inspire innovation among students, such as the Engineering school’s NUS FSAE Race Car Project and the iDP Accelerator Programme Fund.

Calling NUS an institution that is progressive and nurturing, Mr Loh credits NUS for building a strong foundation for his career. Now, he hopes to provide others with the chance to experience that exceptional education.

“My motivation is to provide an opportunity to others in society. Everyone needs an opportunity to develop themselves or achieve their goals but not everyone has access to such an opportunity. Therefore, if we are blessed enough to be able to create one for others, we should seize this opportunity and give back to society,” Mr Loh concluded.
