The Sports category seeks to recognise high-performing sporting individuals or teams with an exceptional track record of achievements. This category is only open to varsity athletes or teams who have represented NUS in competitions.
Individual
Sportswoman of the Year Aloysa Margiela Atienza
Distinction NUS Golf
Aloysa served as a captain in NUS Golf in AY2019/2021 and remained an advisor even after she stepped down. Her most notable achievement is clinching the Silver Medal for Women’s individual golf event during the recent SEA Games. This managed to bring more recognition to NUS Golf. As a captain, she also brought her team to embark on their first overseas training in Batam. She also hosted the NUS Open 2019 successfully with her vast knowledge and expertise in golf. Aloysa also finished first place for the National Ranking Games 2021 and 2022, and for the 2021 SGA Women's Order of Merit.
Sportsman of the Year Christopher Cheong Lee Hong
Merit NUS Swimming
During the AY2021/2022 Institute Varsity Polytechnic Games, Christopher won gold in his two individual events, breaking his own meet record in the 50m breaststroke. He also helped the team achieve 2 golds and 1 silver in the relays. Additionally, he volunteers his time to coach swimmers with special needs at the Special Olympics on weekends.
Sportsman of the Year Matthew Scott Lau
Distinction NUS Sailing
Matthew is a key member of the NUS Sailing team who has contributed significantly to the growth of the team, as well as their excellent achievements in the past year. His achievements include finishing first in both the Asia-Pacific Shakedown Championship 2022 and the SB20 Spring Cup Series 2022. He was also the founder and principal organiser for the Sail SG Challenge 2022.
Sportswoman of the Year Vanessa Lee
Merit NUS Cross Country
Vanessa took part in the Pocari Sweat 2.4km challenge and became the first female Singaporean to break 8 minutes for 2.4km. During the IVP, she participated in the 5000m and 3000m Steeplechase and took home the double gold while breaking the championship records for both events. Additionally, Vanessa has been trying her best to give back to the community by participating in RunNUS as a pacer in 2019.
Sports NUS Sailing team
Distinction NUS Sailing
The NUS Sailing team achieved exemplary results during the 2021 SB20 National Championships and the SB20 Asia Pacific Shakedown 2022. They also contributed greatly to the community by organising 17 basic sailing courses for over 85 participants to learn basic sailing skills. Additionally, they organised Fun Sail 2021 for over 160 participants to experience sailing for the first time. Some of their team members also organised a fund-raising event, the SailSG Challenge, where they raised funds for the KKH Health Fund.

During the IVP, the NUS Swimming team were overall Champions and broke numerous records. Despite the many restrictions due to COVID-19, the team still managed to train regularly by shifting their pool training online. They also served the NUS community through helping with the distribution of ART kits to both staff and students.

Staff Advisor Recognition Award
The Staff Advisor category seeks to recognise individuals who have demonstrated commitment to support the growth and development of the student organisation they were advising. The Staff Advisor must be nominated by the Exco of the student organisation.
Dr Shobha Avadhani
NUS Comedy Club
Shobha Avadhani has played a pivotal role in shaping the NUS Comedy Club. It is with her caring guidance and thoughtful personality that the Club has become a student organisation that is not only fun and engaging, but also purposeful and
meaningful for students. She advises the Club to set meaningful and realistic goals that not only contribute holistically to the educational and personal development of its members, but also to the Club's strategic growth as a popular
CCA among students in NUS. Shobha has demonstrated an unwavering commitment in her support of the Club's continued growth and development.
Dr Helen Chai
NUS Students' Business Club
Helen Chai has always been seen as Bizad Club's mother as she is extremely supportive of the student leaders and is also very nurturing to all of them. She created a safe space for the leaders by allowing them to make mistakes and grow as
leaders. Whenever the student leaders face difficult situations, Dr. Helen is always there to keep them calm and give them close guidance as they maneuver their way through the challenging situations. Helen is truly one of the important
pillars of NUS Business School's undergraduate student life.
