NUS Alumni Melbourne Chapter Celebrates Australia's Favourite day with the Ultimate Aussie Spit & BBQ

26 January

The NUS Alumni Melbourne Chapter celebrated Australia Day on 26 January 2021. Thanks to the sponsorship of NUS Office of Alumni Relation and Singapore Global Networks, over 50 alumni, their family members and guests attended the event. The venue was decorated with Australian Day themed balloons, flags, and tablecloths.

The Australia Day Story began 60,000 years ago though new chapters are written every day. This is a day when Australians reflect on their history; its highs, and its lows. Australia comes together to celebrate her achievements and most of all, her people. As residents in Australia, members of the NUS Alumni Melbourne Chapter are all part of this story.

This was the first event of the year 2021, after a challenging 2020 whereby most of the members in Victoria had been staying at home and had not seen friends and family. The event organisers were careful to observe Victoria’s COVID-19 restrictions, and ensured that everyone had masks and access to hand sanitisers.

The main meal attraction was a Chicken and Lamb Gyros Spit roasted over a charcoal grill for 5 hours, and BBQ sausages, complemented by pita breads, salad, potatoes, and grilled corn. There was even a touch of nostalgia with Kueh Lapis, Brownies, and watermelon for dessert! The experience was appreciated by all who were present.

Here are some of the comments made about the event by alumni who attended:

“Thank you organisers and sponsors. It was great fellowship, delish food and good conversations.” - Arul Earnest (Arts and Social Sciences '97)

“Thank you NUS Alumni Melbourne for organising this wonderful event! It was a lovely catch-up and a great opportunity to make new friends.” - Josephine Tan (Business '96)

“Thanks for organising the event. It was an opportunity to celebrate Australia Day, meet old and make new friends and relive old memories.“ - Michael KL Wong (Law '62)

“Loved the nyonya cake, [it was] not overly sweet like the ones in shops. Thanks to whoever made it. A dessert suitable for diabetics!“ - Juliette Koh-Romary

“We are glad everyone enjoyed themselves today - that made the effort worthwhile! Desserts were made by me, dips and salad by Edna [Chapter Chairperson] and I think both of us can attest that it was quite a challenge baking/making them yesterday in the hot weather. Till the next time, (which is very soon for those who managed to get tickets for the CNY dinner) take care and see you all again soon!” Audrey Sim, Committee Vice-Chairperson/Treasurer (Arts and Social Sciences '96).

Submitted by Ms Edna Yeo (Science '93), Chairperson of NUS Alumni Melbourne Chapter. The event was held in accordance with COVID-19 measures in Melbourne at the time.
