NUS Engineering Alumni Mentorship Welcome Session

11 September

The NUS Engineering Alumni Mentorship Welcome Session was held virtually on Zoom this year on 11 September. During this virtual meeting, mentors were introduced to the new mentees, and mentees who were joining the programme for the second time shared their experiences.

The NUS Engineering Alumni Mentorship Programme strives to build a mutually beneficial relationship between the alumni and student community. Through the programme, alumni stay connected to NUS Engineering and engineering students receive professional and industry‐relevant advice from established alumni.

In Memoriam - Founding Director of OAR, Mr Peter Lim
Mr Peter Lim was one of NUS’ founding champions of alumni relations. Key tenets of his vision back in 1989 still resonate true today – the need to have a concerted approach toward alumni engagement, the importance of painstakingly compiled alumni records; these were but some of the founding principles he laid down during his time.

Mr Lim spent more than three decades with the university. His contributions as the former Director of NUS Alumni Affairs and Development Office, and in his many other roles with NUS ranging from Student Liason Officer to Deputy Registrar, will always be fondly remembered. Ideas that he put in motion, such as the NUS Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society (previously known as the University of Singapore Co-op Bookstore) to help students, stand till this very day. In celebration of his contributions, the Peter S T Lim bursary was established by alumni in Academic Year 1993/1994 to help financially disadvantaged undergraduate students from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Pioneer batch of NUS-FinTechSG Programme Students Graduate!
The pioneer batch of NUS-FinTechSG Programme students have graduated!

1. All Singaporean participants received job offers.

2. They did not have FinTech backgrounds and grew into it.

3. They built their experience in FinTech and are able to jump into new roles.

“As the Roman poet Horace said many years ago, ‘Carpe Diem’, or ‘Seize the Day’ in English. The world as we knew it has changed because of emerging technologies, innovations, and geo-political factors. COVID-19 has further fuelled the change and we must adapt quickly to the new environment and seize opportunities when they appear on the horizon. I congratulate our first batch of FinTech professional certificate graduates who are facing the challenges that are transforming the financial industry. I wish them great success and may the things they learned propel them to great heights in their career, " said Prof Alex Siow, Director of the NUS Strategic Technology Management Institute.
