NUS Innovation Forum (Suzhou) focuses on cutting-edge technologies in China

NIF Suzhou was held on 18 November 2024.

On 18 November, the NUS Innovation Forum (NIF) Suzhou, organised by NUS Alumni Relations, was held at the NUS Suzhou Research Institute (NUSRI) with a focus on "Trends in China’s Industries: Advancements in Cutting-Edge Technology”. Held concurrently with InnovFest Suzhou, the two events complemented each other, connecting the needs of Chinese enterprises with the innovative ideas of NUS and its global network. The event attracted the active participation of many NUS alumni, providing a valuable platform for the exchange of ideas.

LEADING CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY AND EMBRACING THE FUTURE OF INDUSTRY

In his opening speech, Professor Chee Yeow Meng, NUS Vice President (Innovation and Enterprise) and Director of the NUS Enterprise Academy, emphasised how technological innovation is driving social progress and economic growth. He noted that NUS plays an important role in developing the innovation ecosystem and supporting entrepreneurship. For instance, NUS Enterprise has incubated 11 unicorns and over 3,000 start-ups. He also made special mention of the new National Graduate Research Innovation Programme (National GRIP), a joint initiative of NUS and Nanyang Technology University (NTU). Set to launch in January 2025, National GRIP aims to train up to 300 start-up teams by 2028 and foster over 150 spin-offs by 2030.

INNOVATION AND MARKET CONVERGENCE FOR START-UPS

Dr You Mingming (Medicine PhD ’16), founder and chairman of Hangzhou AimingMed Technologies Co., Ltd., then spoke on his research in the fields of tumor pharmacology and precision diagnosis and treatment. Titled "Combination of Technological Innovation and Market Orientation of Start-ups", Dr You’s talk analsyed the current technological progress and pain points of cancer treatment through the research case of organoids. He pointed out that technological innovation needs to be closely integrated with market demand, breaking through the key bottlenecks of productisation and digitalisation, and putting forward targeted solutions. He also spoke about the benefits of research training at the doctoral level for entrepreneurship, which can develop the ability to solve complex problems and lay a solid foundation for entrepreneurship.

TECHNOLOGICAL BREAKTHROUGHS AND CUSTOMISED SERVICE FRONTIERS

Ms Xie Yu (Business ’06), Executive Director of Beijing D-VIEW Intelligence Technology Co., Ltd., shared the innovative achievements of D-VIEW Science and Technology Park in medical display customisation, medical imaging solutions and cloud platform services. Ms Xie Yu said that through the deep integration of precise customisation and cutting-edge technology, D-VIEW Intelligence is setting a new benchmark for the development of the industry.

Ms Xie Yu also emphasised that technological innovation is the driving force for the progress of the industry, and that D-VIEW Intelligence Technology is winning wide recognition in the market through continuous innovation. At the same time, she actively advocated the concept of win-win cooperation, and called on participants to strengthen cooperation, jointly promote the development of the medical technology field, and make use of resource sharing and complementary advantages to contribute to the progress of the industry.

Mr Jesse Li Shu shared the latest developments and personal experience in the industry.

THE WAY FOR CHINESE ENTERPRISES TO GO OVERSEAS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

Mr Jesse Li Shu (Arts & Social Sciences ’11), Executive Director of Singapore Global Innovation Ecosystem Development Centre Co., Ltd., delivered a speech on "Opportunities and Challenges for Chinese Enterprises to Go Overseas in Southeast Asia".  Mr Jesse Li Shu discussed various industries in Southeast Asia, such as artificial intelligence, biomedicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and consumer electronics, and introduced the main ways and strategies for Chinese enterprises to expand into the Southeast Asian market. In particular, he highlighted the key role that Singapore plays, pointing out that, as an important node of global business, the country has unique advantages for Chinese enterprises due to its diversified corporate financing, free flow of capital, internationalisation of talents, RMB settlement centre, preferential tax treatment, high-quality educational resources and excellent business environment. 

Mr Yao Haisong discussed the role of scientific and technological innovation in industrial development. 

"THREE-MEDICINE LINKAGE" AND BIG DATA DRIVE THE DEVELOPMENT OF BIOMEDICINE

Finally, Mr Yao Haisong (LLM ’08), who has cross-industry experience in legal and pharmaceutical research, spoke on the theme of "Led by 'Three Medical Linkage' and Driven by the Scenario-based Application of Big Data to Drive the Development of the Biomedical Industry". He analysed the challenges and opportunities faced by the biomedical industry under the reform of China's "three-medicine linkage", emphasising new development opportunities for the industry, as well as higher requirements for collaboration.

Mr Yao Haisong specifically mentioned that the safety of human biological samples, the protection of health care data and the ethical issues of medical artificial intelligence are all challenges that cannot be ignored in the development of the industry. He also discussed the risks of the application of cutting-edge technology from a legal perspective, emphasising the importance of law in ensuring technological security and promoting innovation.

In addition, Mr. Yao Haisong also elaborated on the impact of big data application on the biomedical industry, stating his belief that while big data brings opportunities to the industry, it also needs to continue to innovate under the premise of ensuring data security and ethics.

ALUMNI ROUNDTABLE FORUM

Amid warm applause and anticipation, the alumni roundtable forum was then chaired by Professor Xu Guoqin, Director of NUSRI. Closely following the topic of "China's Industrial Trends: Cutting-edge Technology Development", four alumni participated in the session, Dr You Mingliang, Ms Xie Yu, Mr Jesse Li Shu and Mr Yao Haisong.

During the session, the alumni discussed the cutting-edge technologies that are currently driving the development of the industry from their professional perspectives and respective fields. They candidly shared their challenges and dilemmas in research and development, and their experiences in successfully breaking through and solving problems.

In the future-ahead session, the panellists made predictions on the technology trends in their respective fields. They agreed that with the continuous progress of science and technology, cutting-edge technology will shine in a wider range of fields and inject a strong impetus into industrial transformation and upgrading. At the same time, they also expressed their expectations for China and Singapore to deepen cooperation and jointly promote scientific and technological innovation and industrial upgrading.

After thorough discussions and exchanges, the forum focused on the context of deepening cooperation between China and Singapore, and the panellists actively offered suggestions and suggestions on how to leverage NUS's international influence and add more bright spots to China-Singapore cooperation. They suggested that NUS and NUSRI should give more assistance to alumni in terms of innovation capacity training, introduction of high-end talents, and capital investment, and at the same time strengthen in-depth cooperation and exchanges between China and Singapore in the field of science and technology, so as to jointly promote scientific and technological innovation and industrial upgrading.

CONNECTING ALUMNI NETWORKS AND BUILDING COLLABORATIONS

At the end of the forum, Mr Jack Ren (Arts and Social Sciences + USP ’11), Deputy Director for China Engagement at NUS Alumni Relations, delivered the closing speech. He said that NUS Alumni Relations has successfully connected alumni networks across China, providing an important platform for alumni to share resources and exchange experiences. Mr Ren pointed out that the alumni association is not only a bridge of friendship, but also a fertile ground for cooperation and innovation. He encouraged alumni to make use of the alumni network to deepen interaction and collaboration, jointly promoting alumni careers and bringing China-Singapore cooperation to a new level.
