Battle Royale (2000), directed by Kinji Fukasaku and screened in Japanese with English subtitles, is an action film that takes place within an alternate political system whereby a randomly selected class of students is sequestered on an island and forced to fight to the death as part of a military ritual. The pre-existing elements of romance and kinship among the students are intensified but quickly devolve into deadly rivalries by the competition. The threat to youthful virtue amidst oppressive social and authoritative forces is at the crux of this allegorical piece.

The exclusive campus atmosphere of this screening is designed to intensify the audience’s experience of the film. Upon entering, the audience are ‘imprisoned’ in the theatre and handed a ‘survival pack’ similar to those inf the film. Each pack will include a character's picture and a stake. Let the game begin!
