NUS Alumnus BBA ’89 Ekachai Uekrongtham is an award-winning film and theatre director and has directed and produced more than 100 plays and musicals in Singapore, China, USA, Malaysia and Thailand. Founding Artistic Director of Action Theatre, Ekachai is credited with musicals such as Chang and Eng and Ka-Ra-you-OK and hard-hitting socially relevant yet touching plays Confessions of Three Unmarried Women, Autumn Tomyam and Mail Order Brides.
His talk will be accompanied by a retrospective of his first three feature films – Beautiful Boxer, Pleasure Factory and The Coffin. Beautiful Boxer, based on the true story of Thailand’s famed transgendered kickboxer, garnered some 15 international awards, following which Ekachai was named Asia’s Most Promising Director at the 2004 International Film Festival of India and Outstanding Emerging Talent at Outfest 2004 in Los Angeles. The film has been released in more than 30 countries and over 100 film festivals. His second film, Pleasure Factory was an Official Selection at the 60th Cannes International Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section. It has been invited to film festivals around the world, including the Pusan International Film Festival in Korea and the Montreal World Film Festival in Canada.
