Dress Code

Your commencement ceremony is a formal, dignified occasion where your academic achievements at NUS are honoured in front of your family, friends and the University’s faculty. To accord due respect, the dress code for Commencement is ‘shirt and tie’ (or its equivalent).

Graduates who are not appropriately dressed will not be presented on stage.


Suggested Dress Code

  Male graduate Female graduate


  • For men:
    • Collared long-sleeved shirt, long trousers and a tie
    • Covered shoes with socks

  • For women:
    • Shirt/blouse with a skirt/long trousers, or a dress
    • Appropriate shoes of a comfortable height

  • Inappropriate attire:
    • Casual or revealing attire such as T-shirts, shorts, bermudas, tank tops
    • Slippers/flip flops or sandals
    • Any messages or pictorials on top of a graduate’s mortarboard or bonnet.
  • *Note: Graduates in inappropriate attire may not be presented on stage.
