Lending a Helping Hand
In memory of their late mother and the care she showed to those around her, the Goh siblings are continuing her legacy of helping others through the Soh Bin Seng Bursary.

The warmth in Mr Goh Chong Khing’s (Science ’67) voice is palpable as he speaks about his late mother, Mdm Soh Bin Seng. The “Big Aunt” of the family, Mdm Soh was a steadfast and caring maternal figure to many of her relatives, devoting herself to looking after those around her. “Everyone was always very appreciative and grateful for her,” Mr Goh recalled fondly.
Today, Mr Goh and his sister Ms Goh Peck Hong are carrying on their mother’s values of compassion and generosity through the establishment of the Soh Bin Seng Bursary.
The Soh Bin Seng Bursary will uplift financially needy students across the University, providing relief to talented students who may not have the means to pursue their studies at NUS. Having seen many university students struggling and holding down multiple part-time jobs to fund their studies, the Goh siblings hope the Bursary can ease this pressure and enable students to keep their focus on doing well at school.
“With a transformative higher education, these students will be better prepared for employment and opportunities,” Mr Goh explained. “We hope this will further their personal development and inspire them to one day go on to help others too.”
The Goh siblings also hope that more people will choose to remember their parents and loved ones with gifts that support various causes at the University. “Anyone who has had a loving father or mother can make a gift in honour of them,” Mr Goh said. “We also hope others would agree that a helping hand in need can contribute to the betterment of lives.”
Musing on how Mdm Soh would feel to know that she is being honoured in this way, he simply said: “I think she must be very happy.”
