Climate change is accelerating at an unprecedented rate due to rapid urbanisation.
New technology, geopolitical instability, and increasing socioeconomic inequality impact how cities are planned, built and lived in.
There is also an increasing need to look into issues arising from urbanisation, such as the design and use of the physical environment, climate change, population growth, environmental conservation, sustainable energy, food security, water consumption and environmental sustainability.
Our initiatives are tailored to address these complex challenges, pursuing solutions for a more resilient future.
The strength of the NUS Giving community lies in a common belief that collective efforts can lead to meaningful impact. We are united in our commitment to make the world a better place, one sustainability initiative at a time. Dive into our compelling stories of impact and be inspired.

At NUS, we are advancing critical areas of research and education. Explore the emerging and important fields that the University is investing in and join us in forging a better future together.
Climate change is a critical challenge facing Singapore. As a global leader in sustainability initiatives, the nation has enacted bold programs like the Singapore Green Plan and Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters Programme to reduce its carbon footprint and promote sustainable technologies. NUS plays a pivotal role in supporting these national efforts. Our research initiatives, including those on renewable energy and the Green Mark Scheme, align directly with Singapore’s vision for a greener future.
NUS actively champions Singapore’s distinctive approach to sustainable urbanisation. Through research aligned with the Green Mark Scheme and other national strategies, we focus on integrating sustainability into every facet of urban planning. Community engagement programmes further this goal, ensuring Singapore’s cities are built for a greener future.
NUS aims to support Singapore's sustainability agenda. Our research centres, such as the Centre for Hydrogen Innovations (CHI), spearhead initiatives focused on renewable energy and innovative waste solutions. Additionally, we conduct critical research on restoring ecosystems, safeguarding biodiversity, and mitigating the effects of climate change.
As a leading research hub, Singapore plays a pivotal role in confronting climate change. NUS is at the forefront of these efforts, driving transformative research to mitigate climate impacts and build resilience. Our work, supported by centres like the Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions, addresses this global crisis through innovative solutions.
Empowering the next generation is crucial. NUS nurtures a community of young environmental leaders through a diverse range of programmes. From educating them on climate action to fostering hands-on sustainability projects, we aim to equip Singapore’s youth to shape a greener future for all.
