Temasek Hall Alumni Beach Cleanup

12 September

Each year, the south-west monsoon brings trash from neighbouring countries to Singapore’s southern coastlines. This is often in addition to trash that is left behind by beach-goers or other human activities in Singapore. Alerted to the trash situation, Temasek Hall Alumni Board gathered a few interested Temasek Hall (TH) alumni for a beach clean-up at East Coast Park. The clean-up was held over a span of two days — 5 and 12 September — and 19 TH alumni and 4 current TH residents volunteered their time and energy to the effort.

Despite bad weather conditions and the current Covid-19 situation, the volunteers trudged on and collected a total of 32kg worth of trash, while respecting the rules of safe distancing. Types of trash collected include cigarette buds, plastic bottles, bottle caps, straws, Styrofoam pieces, slippers, and clothes hangers.  An eye-opening experience for most volunteers, this event successfully raised awareness of the environmental issues of mismanaged waste, littering, and environmental pollution.

Although Covid-19 has prevented them from organising large-scale events, the TH Alumni Board is glad to have brought Temasek Hall residents, old and new, together for a greater purpose.
