Being “socially disconnected” from others for a period of time can be challenging or even distressing to some. To provide support for NUS students, staff and the wider community during the phased “circuit breaker” period, the NUS StayHome webinar series was launched by the Office of University Communications in May 2020. Thought leaders in their fields and experts providing guidance on coping with the COVID-19 situation come forward to share insights with participants who literally have to “stay at home”.
The webinar series kick-started with Nobel Laureate Professor Sir Konstantin Novoselov from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering who narrated the story behind his ground-breaking research in graphite; as well as discussed the ‘Architecture of Science’ with NUS School of Design and Environment Dean, Professor Lam Khee Poh. An accomplished artist in Chinese painting, Prof Novoselov also shared about ‘When Art and Science Collide’ in another webinar, moderated by Associate Professor Lonce Wyse from the Department of Communications and New Media.
The webinars also touch on everyday concerns which will resonate with many, especially during this period. Participants will find topics such as adjusting to the “new normal”, and living holistically with useful tips on healthy eating, mindfulness training, office ergonomics and mental wellness useful while working or studying at home.
The NUS StayHome Series hopes to bring some element of social connectivity and optimism to attendees while imparting helpful advice and knowledge. To date, more than 1,800 participants from the NUS community and beyond have tuned in to the webinar series to learn from thought leaders and subject matter experts.
