Crafting Traditions: Helix House Brings the Spirit of Chinese New Year Alive with Lantern Making Workshop

On January 30th 2024, Helix House residents gathered for a lantern-making workshop in celebrating Lunar New Year. The tradition of lantern-making dates back to the Eastern Han Dynasty more than 2000 years ago, where lanterns were made and hung to celebrate auspicious events and occasions. Residents were in high spirits in crafting their own lanterns which symbolized good fortune and luck for the new year. This resulted in a vibrant display of cultural celebration.

At the workshop, attendees were guided through the crafting process by friendly instructors who provided step-by-step instructions, ensuring that even those unfamiliar with the art of lantern making could participate with ease. As one attendee, Yijie remarked, "The instructors were quite nice and led us step by step. It was quite foolproof."

The use of small angpows added a unique touch to the lanterns, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune for the upcoming year. Participants eagerly embraced the opportunity to immerse themselves in this time-honored tradition, showcasing their creativity and enthusiasm for the Chinese culture. As the evening drew to a close, the lanterns were proudly displayed, casting a warm and inviting glow that symbolized hope, prosperity, and the promise of new beginnings.
