Resident Assistant Recruitment

Helix House is dedicated to fostering a supportive and inclusive community, achieved through a partnership with our Resident Assistants (RAs)—student leaders who are selected through a rigorous process and live on-site. As an RA, you are crucial in bolstering the support network for our residents, ensuring their welfare, and enhancing their experience in collaboration with Resident Fellows (RFs) and the Residential Life (RL) team.

Our RAs receive comprehensive training to develop essential life skills that are invaluable during their tenure and beyond, often becoming the distinguishing factor in their future career success. These trainings cover a range of topics, including Crisis Management & Pastoral Care, Event Management, Communications, Professional Development, and Presentation Skills.

Are you ready to elevate your leadership abilities and make a lasting impact at Helix House? Apply for the RA positions and take the first step towards a rewarding experience at Helix House!

RAs are required to reside in the House, and will be provided a single room in the block under their care. We welcome all full-time NUS students, including residents and non-residents (undergraduate and postgraduate).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are the criteria that I should satisfy to apply for an RA position?
There isn’t really any fixed criterion, as the suitability of the candidate will be evaluated holistically. However, our RAs demonstrate the following attributes:

- Quick on their feet
- Versatile
- Flexible
- Observant
- Organized
- Good people skill
- Team player

Must I have substantial leadership experience to be considered as an RA?
No substantial leadership experience is required though it is advantageous to have had some leadership experience. Willingness to learn is most important.

Must I be a current Helix House resident to qualify?
No. All NUS full-time undergraduate students can apply.

I get the impression that RAs have a lot of responsibilities and commitments. Is this true?
Yes, it is true. However, with good time management, you should be able to balance RA duties and other commitments.

Do I have to be on duty 24/7?
No, you don’t. You may apply for leave if you would like to be away. There is also a roster system where two RAs are on duty on week nights and weekends. There are some blocked periods, such as training for new RAs and preparation for orientation, that all RAs are supposed to be present.

What kinds of training and support do I get to help perform my duties as an RA?
Training workshops include pastoral care, crisis management, event management, communication, mental health and wellbeing, suicide prevention, self discovery and leadership. The most valuable is on the job training. There is also plenty of support from the residential life team, especially fellow RAs.

What are the benefits of being an RA?
Key benefits are that you get to:

- sharpen your leadership skills
- enhance personal growth
- build a community
- form meaningful connections through work and play
- experience handling real-life situations
- work with a committed and caring team

Do I get to choose the room type and block if I am an RA?
You will be assigned a room according to needs.
