Southeast Asia Friendship Initiative (SFI) Study Trip - Malang City
From 14 to 21 May 2023, a group of 16 Pioneer House (PH) residents and 4 NUS staff participated in a study trip to Malang City, Indonesia. Hosted by a group of staff and 19 students from Universitas Brawijaya (UB), the NUS participants had a fruitful time learning more about the culture in Malang City, and had deepened their understanding and knowledge of what sustainability is about.
During their time in Malang, they had the privilege of visiting Ngroto Village and Bumiaji where they were introduced to sustainable and organic farming practices. The village showcased innovative ways to cultivate crops while preserving the ecosystem and promoting biodiversity. Ngroto Village embraces and celebrates its cultural heritage by organising a variety of captivating performances that showcases the vibrant traditions of the local community.
One of the key highlights of the group's trip was visiting the magnificent Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Surrounded by awe-inspiring landscapes and towering volcanoes, they were captivated by the breathtaking beauty of nature.
The trip was organized and led by PH Resident Fellow, Dr Andi Sudjana Putra, and supported by PH Manager Ms Jean Wang. In addition, two FASS lecturers, A/Prof Jamie Davidson and Dr Faizah Zakaria, had accompanied on the trip as tutor and observer for the SFI programme.
