The role of industrial toxicologists has evolved significantly, reflecting advances in toxicology and the changing needs of industry. This evolution is expected to continue, with increasing emphasis on next-generation testing paradigms that may establish new standards for safety assessment.

This presentation highlights key themes - including current priorities, technological advancements, collaboration and innovation, and the value of resilience and a positive mindset - in demonstrating how industrial toxicologists can deliver meaningful, value-added impact.

This webinar series showcases real-world case studies from industry projects to help students understand current challenges and how they are addressed in practice. By highlighting industry practices, decision-making processes, and the application of both technical expertise and professional competencies, the series aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry expectations.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Sang-Tae Kim earned his PhD in Organic Physical Chemistry from Arizona State University and completed an NIH postdoctoral fellowship at the University of North Carolina. He is a Senior Principal Toxicologist and leads Global Toxicology and Product Safety at Ashland Specialty Chemical Company. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology (DABT), European Registered Toxicologist (ERT), Fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences (ATS), and United Kingdom Registered Toxicologist (UKRT).

Over the past 30+ years, he has led human and environmental risk assessments and supported regulatory compliance with chemical products, active (and non-active) pharmaceutical ingredients, and medical devices across multinational consumer products and biotechnology/pharmaceutical organizations, with more than 200 scientific publications.

He has served as an ad hoc peer reviewer for the U.S. EPA Science Advisory Committee on Chemicals (SACC) and currently serves on the Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates (SOCMA) Environmental Committee and Health & Safety Committee, the International Pharmaceutical Excipients Council–Americas (IPEC-Americas) Scientific Affairs Committee, and the American Chemistry Council (ACC) Chemical Management & Science Policy Committee
