But before you launch into applying for jobs, take some time to see how the people around you can help. Step one in embarking on your job search is to build your network. 

Networking is about building and maintaining new professional relationships. Networking has immense social and professional value for your career and can open doors to opportunities. According to a 2017 LinkedIn survey, almost 50% of professionals in Singapore attribute landing their current jobs to networking.

Expand your knowledge of an industry or subject and learn about what fields interest you.

Gain potential opportunities for mentorship and career guidance from experienced professionals in your field.

Make valuable connections for internships and job opportunities. 

So you already have some great connections in your network, but have you tried tapping them up for internship or job opportunities? Remember that everyone in your network has their own professional network. Let people in your network know what roles and industries you are interested in, so they can look out for relevant opportunities within their own professional network.

Use LinkedIn to find alumni and professionals on your target list of companies and industries, then contact them to find out more about what they do (an informational interview). Most professionals are very happy to help out students aspiring to enter their industry. These conversations can provide valuable insights into the industry and company culture and may also lead to referrals for potential internships or job opportunities.

1. Set clear goals: Use your VIPS to define your career goals and focus your search on a narrow list of roles and industries
    
2. Research industries and companies: Conduct thorough research on industries and companies that align with your VIPS and career goals
    
3. Create a target list: Develop a list of target companies you want to work for, and prioritise your applications for those that offer the best fit.

 

4. Customise your application materials: Tailor your resume, cover letter, and online profiles to highlight relevant skills and experiences, to stand out from the competition 
   
   
5. Develop a job search routine: Establish a structured routine to apply to and respond to job opportunities, and create a spreadsheet to track the status of all your applications. 

1. Register on Company Portals 

Not all companies post their available positions on public job portals. With your shortlist of companies, make sure to also visit company websites to search for open positions there. 

2. Set Alerts 

Setting alerts based on your filters is a great way to make the job search more efficient, as you will receive updates whenever a relevant position is posted. Set alerts on public portals and company portals to be the first to know when a new role is posted!
