How to Network Effectively: Tips You Can Start Using Today

As per a 2017 LinkedIn Survey, almost 80% of 15,905 participants considered networking important to career success ad 70% were hired through a connection. However, as per recent research, the pandemic resulted in considerable shrinkage in people's professional networks. Now is the opportunity to rebuild and expand your network to build connections in your fields of interest and, be the first to hear of new opportunities, especially critical in today’s volatile job market.

In this workshop, we will explore how to overcome barriers and challenges to networking and adapt relevant skills and tools to network efficiently. Through the session, you can learn how to employ the 3 P’s of networking - Prepare, Present and Practise - to network effectively at the upcoming NUS Career Fest 2023, other networking events as well as online platforms such as conNectUS. This is a physical session, come prepared to, network, interact and have fun!

Lakshmi Ramachandran, PhD, specialises in creating and facilitating professional development training programmes for NUS students on topics such as communication skills, productivity, and emotional intelligence through the Centre for Future-ready Graduates. She is an ICF-ACC and Belbin Teams accredited coach and holds a Cambridge International Diploma in Teaching and Training (CIDTT). She has over 20 years of experience in science as a researcher, communicator and programme manager. She is also a catalyst for the advancement of women in science.

Kum Hoong has more than 20 years of corporate experience in the public service and private sector, mainly in the travel, hospitality & lifestyle industries. A many-year voluntary stint with the FASS Mentorship Programme ignited his interest to pivot into career coaching. He now places the students’ passions and skillsets at the heart of his current core work and delights in helping them land internship and job roles.

Hock Thiam, (HT for short), is a seasoned HR Professional with more than 20 years of local, regional and global experience managing the full spectrum within HR, including mobility and other specialized fields. He has worked in various local and foreign MNCs as a Senior Global HR Business Partner.

HT’s passion is in Talent Management and Organizational Development relishing time spent in transforming and developing talent. He enjoys coaching and providing support to senior management, managers, and colleagues at all levels. In his free time, he volunteers as a mentor to students from National University of Singapore via NUSS and FASS to help them cope with university life and prepare them for the transition to working life.
