Career Horizons in Specialty Chemicals: Insights from Evonik

Deepen your understanding of key drivers shaping the specialty chemical sector, including sustainability, digitalisation, and changing market demands. In this session, Dr. Ewan Stephenson and Dr. Tan Chau Jin, both seasoned professionals in the specialty chemical industry, will also share their career journeys.

Dr. Stephenson, with a background in molecular and cellular biology, will discuss research and development in Evonik Singapore, as well as the role of biologists in the specialty chemicals industry. Dr. Tan will delve into his diverse career experience, sharing challenges faced in career transitions and chemical manufacturing in Singapore.

Tan
Dr. Tan Chau Jin began his career in the areas of new product and application development. Since joining Evonik in 2012, his career had span across innovation management, process technology, project engineering and procurement. He is currently the Plant Manager at the world’s largest methionine production complex, overseeing and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the chemical plant. This includes establishing safety standards, promoting a culture of safety among employees, minimising plant downtime and optimising production cost through effective management of resources and processes.

Ewan
Dr. Ewan Stephenson joined Evonik in 2022 after completing his PhD in Molecular Biomedicine. He works in Creavis, the strategic innovation unit of Evonik. At Creavis, he works with the Life-Sciences Cluster, translating the chemical excellence of Evonik into new business opportunities in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical markets. Starting as a Bioprocess Expert, he played a role in setting up viral vector production platform and the BSL2+ laboratory at the Singapore Asia Research Hub. He has now transitioned to project management, moving from a laboratory role to a more business and management focused role.
