From Research to Reality: Mastering Communication for Broader Impact

In today’s interconnected world, the ability to explain complex research to non-specialist audiences is more critical than ever. Join us for this lunchtime talk designed to empower graduate students and students embarking on research with the essential skills of academic communication and presentation.

By honing these skills, students not only enhance their academic and professional profiles but also contribute to making their research more accessible and impactful. Most importantly, this session is an opportunity for students to cultivate communication mastery that supports both personal and collective growth.

This programme is organised by our librarian Richard Ho.

Learn

  • Practical strategies to help students translate their expertise into compelling narratives that resonate beyond academia
  • How to bridge the gap between academia and the wider community
  • How to engage stakeholders to amplify research impact on society, culture, or the environment

Speakers

Dr Rafi Rashid

Dr Rafi Rashid

Senior Lecturer, NUS Graduate School
Associate Director of Studies, Tembusu College
Dr Rafi is particularly interested in training students how to improve their communication skills, engage in interdisciplinary inquiry, and recognize the importance of ethical decision-making in everyday life. As an active researcher, he collaborates with local and overseas colleagues to study the role of bacterial lipids in antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which the World Health Organization has declared a serious global health problem. This research inspired him to take his teaching to a global audience via an EdX Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) called “Small Organisms, Big Solutions: Microbiomes and Sustainability”.
Seow Wei Lun Mark

Seow Wei Lun Mark

PhD Graduate, NUS Graduate School, Integrative Sciences and Engineering Programme
Mark is passionate about turning complex ideas into compelling narratives. A PhD graduate in computational neuroscience, he won first prize at the Universitas 21 Three Minute Thesis Global Competition for distilling his research into an engaging story. His work explored how we memorize information in chunks by studying primates playing computer games. Mark believes that PhD students, armed with strong communication skills, truly have the potential to create real-world impact through the power of data storytelling.
NUSGS Francesca Picucci

Francesca Picucci

PhD Student, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine
Francesca is a PhD student at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. She spent 12 months of her PhD researching at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston. Her research focuses on the effects of cannabis and cannabinoids in cancer.

After winning the NUS and Singapore National rounds of the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, Francesca was selected as a finalist in the 2024 Asia-Pacific round and competed in the U21 Global 3MT competition, where she summarised her PhD thesis to a non-scientific audience in less than three minutes.
