SciNavigate: Research Stories and Strategies from the Lab

Curious about scientific research but unsure where to start? Wondering if a research career is right for you? Or how to communicate your research effectively to diverse audiences?

Join our seminar to gain insights from four PhD candidates who will share their journeys into research, daily lab challenges, and effective communication strategies. Each speaker brings a unique perspective, having taken different paths to reach their current positions.

Undergraduates of all levels are welcome to attend and discuss their questions about research and science communication with our panelists.

Learn

  • How to get started in research
  • To gain a better understanding of what pursuing research is like
  • The ways to communicate science effectively

Speakers

Ryan Fan

Ryan Fan Ruiming

PhD Student in Life Science
Having always been interested in biology, Ryan recently graduated from NUS Life Science, and is currently in the midst of a PhD in molecular biology. His research interests are long non-coding RNA in development and cardiomyocyte biology. When he's not in the lab, his hobbies include hiking and nature photography.

Li Xin

Li Xin

PhD Student in Chemistry
Li Xin obtained her BA and MSc from University of Cambridge. She then worked at Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), A*STAR for two years before starting her PhD at NUS in 2023 in Chemistry. Her research interests include synthesizing molecules with unusual properties, as well as supramolecular chemistry and stimuli responsive dynamic systems.

Arthur Strauss

Arthur Strauss

PhD Student in Physics
Arthur Strauss is a PhD student at CQT in Singapore. His research journey began during his Master's in Switzerland, where he worked with Quantum Machines on integrating quantum control systems with software layers. This experience sparked his interest in bridging theory and practice in quantum computing. Now, at CQT, he develops software to fine-tune gate calibrations based on specific quantum circuits. His work spans academia and industry, preparing him for his goal of joining the quantum tech sector. Throughout his journey, he has learned the value of flexibility, teamwork, and applying theoretical insights to real-world challenges.

Siaw Wei

Ang Siaw Wei

PhD Student in Physics
Siaw Wei is a current Year 2 PhD student under NUS Physics in Organic Nano Device Laboratory (NUS) after graduating from NUS in 2022. In 2019, her first project was on the investigation of shell-type supernovae using hydrodynamic simulations. In 2020, she did a UROPS under Loh Huanqian group in CQT on the topic of passive polarization stability in optical fibers. She was also the mentor in Special Programme in Science (SPS). Her FYP and current research topic is on organic solar cells.
