Syair or rhymed poetry has long been a popular literary genre in the Malay-Indonesian society. Peranakan Chinese writers, such as Na Tien Piet, Lie Kim Hok and Kwee Tek Hoay, made significant contributions to this popular expression. Like their
Malay counterparts, Peranakan syairs cover a variety of themes, including devotion and longing, social critique, didactic admonition, autobiography and historical account.
Join us on a poetic journey through the world of syair,
where you'll uncover the rich cultural heritage of the Chinese Peranakans in the Straits Settlements during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Dive into the stories, traditions, and literary expressions that define
this unique community!
This event is part of the new Roots & Reflection series.
