A Dummy’s Guide to Data Storytelling with AI

Want to turn boring data into compelling stories that your audience can understand?

Using Claude, we will demonstrate how to transform a raw dataset into an interactive dashboard that brings key insights to life. You’ll learn a simple four-step workflow—source, clean, chart, interact—and discover how AI can help you move from raw data to an engaging visual story.

By the end of the session, you’ll have three reusable prompt templates and a working dashboard that you can use to add impact to your next presentation. No coding required.

Learn

  • To apply four storytelling angles—absolute, growth rate, ranking, and acceleration—to data sourced from NUS Libraries' databases, drawing different defensible conclusions from a single dataset to support your research questions.

  • To use Claude to interrogate, clean and visualise a database export—applying prompt engineering and the Tidy Data framework—and produce an interactive dashboard you can verify against the source, without writing code or setting up a Python environment.

Preparation for Participants

  • Participants are required to bring their laptop.
  • Register for a Claude account at https://claude.ai/.

Prerequisite: This workshop assumes participants have basic familiarity with AI tools like ChatGPT or Claude. We focus on data visualisation workflows, not AI fundamentals. But this workshop will not require any coding to implement data visualisation; it presents a no-code, prompt-engineering data framework.

All NUS staff and students are welcome.
