Print Advertisements of the Past: A Glimpse into Everyday Living

Have you seen vintage advertisements for household brands such as LUX and Anchor in the early 1900s? Beyond promoting products, these advertisements offer fascinating insights into the everyday lives of people in the past.

By turns humorous and thought-provoking, this session explores print advertisements found in our rare newspapers and magazines collection, uncovering how they reflected social attitudes, lifestyles, and consumer aspirations of their time.

NUS Libraries’ Collections in Context: Stories from Our Archives is a new series by NUS Libraries that showcases how our Special Collections and Singapore/Malaysia Collection are being used by the NUS community. Through real case studies, each session brings together librarians, students, researchers, and educators to share the materials they worked with, how they used them in their projects and the insights and discoveries that emerged. Keep a lookout for the upcoming sharing by postgraduate students using our rare and special collections!
