Pulau Ubin’s Biodiversity Stories: Braiding Science, Heritage, and Community Knowledge

Pulau Ubin is one of Singapore’s last remaining haven of rural and ecological heritage. Its forests, mangroves, rocky shores, wetlands, and kampungs support an extraordinary diversity of plants and animals. As Singapore continues to evolve, how do we preserve the stories, landscapes, and biodiversity that make places unique?

Join us as we explore the interdisciplinary effort behind the Pulau Ubin: Biodiversity Stories project, which brought together researchers, students, photographers, naturalists, and community contributors to document and communicate the island’s biodiversity heritage. Through photographs, species accounts, field observations, and digital storytelling, the project highlights how biodiversity documentation can support conservation, public engagement, and cultural memory.

The presentation will feature selected stories from the island’s flora and fauna — from insects and reptiles to birds and mammals — while reflecting on how scientific research, local knowledge, and digital humanities approaches can be braided together to preserve and share Singapore’s natural heritage.

This event is part of the Biodiversity in Focus series, aimed at sharing research findings on biodiversity in Southeast Asia and insights on ecosystem dynamics.
