Voices of Women in Malay Print

Step into the world of early Malay newspapers and magazines, and uncover the voices, perspectives, and contributions of women in print culture.

This session explores how archival materials reveal women’s roles in shaping public discourse and hidden perspectives within historical publications.

Hear from Dr Azhar Ibrahim and Nur Diyana as they share how they worked with rare materials from the Malay Heritage Centre Collection and beyond, and what these sources reveal about women’s presence in Malay newspapers and magazines.

This session will be held at the Singapore/Malaysia Collection, currently featuring an exhibition on Perempuan Melayu...Biadab?, a decolonial exploration of colonial and self-representations of Malay women. The exhibition interrogates colonial narratives by centering empowering works and images of Malay women.

NUS Libraries’ Collections in Context: Stories from Our Archives is a new series by NUS Libraries that showcases how our Special Collections and Singapore/Malaysia Collection are being used by the NUS community. Through real case studies, each session brings together librarians, students, researchers, and educators to share the materials they worked with, how they used them in their projects and the insights and discoveries that emerged. Keep a lookout for the upcoming sharing by postgraduate students using our rare and special collections!
