Wild Nocturnal Gardener: Surprising Lessons from the Common Palm Civet

Did you know that the common palm civet can be found in our vibrant NUS campus? Discover their fascinating world with a short talk, uncovering where and when they’re active, their diet, and how they communicate. Then put your newfound knowledge to the test in an interactive game about Singapore’s remarkable “night gardeners”!

This event is organised by our librarian, Gladys Toh.

This event is part of the Biodiversity in Focus series, aimed at sharing research findings on biodiversity in Southeast Asia and insights on ecosystem dynamics.

Drop by the IARU Biodiversity on Campus Photo Exhibition, on-going at the Medicine+Science Library till 22 May 2026.

The exhibition showcases 10 winning entries of the IARU (International Alliance of Research Universities) Biodiversity Photo Contest, chosen from over 260 submissions – capturing the surprising biodiversity around IARU university campuses, paired with the photographers’ reflections and stories behind each shot. Find out which three winning photos were taken in NUS!

N. Sivasothi & Xu Weiting

NUS Department of Biological Sciences
‘Civetgirl’ Xu Weiting and ‘Otterman’ N. Sivasothi are biodiversity and ecology educators with the Department of Biological Sciences. Both are passionate coordinators of NUS Toddycats. Weiting’s honours’ year research about urban civets in Siglap led to an active role in raising awareness and fostering harmony between humans and wildlife through NUS Toddycats and the Urban Wildlife Working Group. Sivasothi also actively champions stewardship of our natural heritage through the Biodiversity Friends Forum and the One Million Tree movement – planting trees helps all life, including common palm civets!
