A multitude of adjectives can be used to describe the research world – complex, thrilling, intimidating, fulfilling, unfamiliar, exciting…...and many more. In many ways, the research world is kaleidoscopic, as a researcher’s journey of discovering new findings is often unpredictable and ever-changing.
Join us for a session with our undergraduate REx Fellows as they share insights from their research projects, along with personal stories of successes, failures, and lessons learned. Dive into the realities of research across different fields through the eyes of undergraduate researchers, and how each of their unique research experience have shaped them.

Loh An Lin
Year 4, History
An Lin is an NUS College / USP student, currently in Year 4. She is a History Major and Chinese Studies Minor, and has been deeply invested in understanding modern East Asian History in her undergraduate days. In particular, she is interested in both Japan and China, and spent a year in Beijing under the NOC programme. Over her four years in NUS, her historical research tended to come from her engagement with the world outside the classroom – and this UROP project reflects the varied, “kaleidoscopic” nature of her research. She intends to go into graduate studies, after her stint at NUS.

Maryam Saleel Kolakkodan
Year 4, Life Sciences
Maryam is a final-year undergraduate who unexpectedly found her way into the world of research. Her current work focuses on the distribution of elasmobranchs in Singapore, with an additional component exploring recreational fishers' perceptions of these species. With minors in Asian Studies and Geosciences, Maryam is always seeking opportunities to apply her multidisciplinary training.

Year 3, Psychology
Mavrix is a year 3 Psychology Major currently looking to specialize in Cognitive Psychology. He gravitated towards this branch of Psychology because of an interest in studying the human mind and how it works. His research focuses on studying various learning strategies and how they could be modified to afford greater benefits.

Wang Anchuan
Year 2, Physics
Anchuan, a year 2 undergraduate at NUS, majored in physics and specialization in astrophysics. He is equipped with fundamental math and physics skills, and with data analysis and computer programming abilities. Currently, Anchuan is doing a project on
reviewing a series of papers of how to estimate the number density of galaxies in a given region of the universe.

Dr Siti Nur Fairuz Binte Sheikh Ismail
Instructor, Undergraduate Research Team, Office of the Provost
Dr Fairuz received her Bachelor’s in Chemistry in 2017 and her PhD in Organic Chemistry in 2022 from the National University of Singapore. Her doctoral research focused on studying effective ways to synthesise small and medium-sized heterocyclic
structures using transition metal catalysts. She is now an Instructor and Programme Coordinator for the Research Experience (REx) Programme offered by the Office of the Provost, which aims to provide a holistic research experience for undergraduate
students. Dr Fairuz believes in the multitude of benefits that research brings to undergraduate education and hopes to inspire more students to take up research by guiding them in navigating the research world.
