Research Integrity & Publishing Ethics: A Publisher's Take

The publishing industry faces ongoing challenges in maintaining research integrity and upholding ethical standards. The rise of paper mills, data fabrication, plagiarism, authorship misconduct, and the inappropriate use of Generative AI have eroded public trust and raised concerns over the credibility of academic publishing. Additionally, well-meaning researchers can fall into ethical pitfalls such as unintentional data misrepresentation, inadequate citation practices, or authorship disputes driven by pressures of a “Publish or Perish” environment.

This talk aims to provide clarity and guidance on how to avoid research misconduct—emphasising the importance of transparency, proper attribution, and adherence to ethical guidelines throughout the research process. By doing so, it supports the reliability of published findings and helps uphold research integrity.

This session is held back-to-back with the talk, Generative AI and Innovations in Scholarly Publishing: Publisher Insights. Light refreshments will be provided for participants who sign up for both sessions.
