Experience the Reality of Losing Sight: Dialogue in the Dark Tour
Helix House residents were extremely fortunate to experience a golden opportunity through the Helix Signature event titled ‘Dialogue in the Dark’ organised by A/Prof Dan McAllister, Resident Fellow of Block 16.
On 25th September 2024, a group of Helixians participated in the ‘Dialogue in the Dark’ (DiD) tour, which is a unique, experiential teaching and learning tour conducted at Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
Participants completed a one-hour walk through an entirely pitch black exhibit where they were tasked to use walking canes to navigate through the different stations. These included crossing the road, watching movies with audio descriptions, reading braille books, navigating a market place, visiting a park, and ordering and eating at a cafe. The entire experience was led by a tour guide who is visually impaired and who had lost part of her eyesight due to a disease at age 18. She gave the participants an insight into what it is like to experience life in Singapore as someone visually impaired.
All attendees agreed that they gained a very valuable lesson of being empathetic. The immersive and unforgettable experience allowed them to appreciate what they currently have in life which they have been taking granted for all this while.
