Starting from a blank slate is never easy. These were the sentiments shared by Bryan, a Resident Assistant, when he reflected on his memorable journey organising the inaugural Helix House orientation. Indeed, the task at hand was monumental and challenging, as the committee of 10 Resident Assistants had to plan and execute an orientation for over 300 people from scratch with no precedent to follow.

Forging an identity together

Helix House has a remarkably diverse community, with students hailing from a variety of academic disciplines, seniority levels, and nationalities. Creating an orientation that meets the expectations of every individual is, therefore, not an easy feat. However, the challenge was taken on wholeheartedly by the passionate Resident Assistants, who understood that this diversity is an asset, not a hindrance—the unique personality and character of every Helixian will contribute to the DNA of Helix House.

While the task was daunting, it was not one shouldered by the Resident Assistants alone. The floor leaders and the Residential Life team played instrumental roles, providing valuable insights and were highly supportive. Together, a 3-day orientation based around friendly competition and the theme of exploration was conceptualised.

DNA that binds

Participants were brought together through a series of icebreakers, games, and friendly competitions. These activities aimed to help Helixians familiarise themselves with the house, build a communal spirit, and kickstart long-lasting friendships. Ziyuan, the orientation project director, reflected what she thought was the most memorable part of the orientation: “ For me, it would be the treasure hunt and bingo challenge on the second day of our orientation. These two activities enabled Orientation Groups to explore different parts of PGP and Helix. At the same time, orientation groups needed to strategize their move and complete challenges as a team so as to gain higher points." The entire community, including the Resident Fellows, took part in the games with much enthusiasm. Eventually, the winning teams walked away with attractive cash prizes that they eagerly sought to invest into their block community. “We hope through the orientation programme, Helix House could evolve into a tightly-knit community, bonded by shared experience and newly formed friendships.”

The Beginning, Not the End

The Helix House Orientation was not the culmination but rather the initiation stage of a much grander journey. It planted the seeds of unity, camaraderie, and identity within Helix House. Now, Helixians will build on what was achieved and carry the spirit forward.

Interest groups and house events will serve as the canvas upon which the once-empty Helix House culture builds from. Many block activities have been launched, and many ground-up initiatives have been proposed. Together, residents can imbue the Helix House DNA further, fostering an inclusive and bonded community— one where Helixians are proud to call it their home.

In the end, the first step is always the most challenging step. Helix House took that step boldly, crafting an orientation that celebrated diversity, friendships, and laid the groundwork for a community bound by shared experiences. As the blank slate begins to fill with colourful memories, Helix House will undoubtedly blossom into a vibrant and bonded House!
