Immersing in culture: Kampung Glam Heritage Trail

24 August 2024 marked one of Helix’s first Signature Events this academic year, delving deep into the bustling culture of Kampong Glam. Led by Guest Guide, Ms Stella Wee, Helix House residents immersed themselves into the rich history of this very iconic district. The Kampong Glam Heritage Trail involved exploring notable landmarks, including the old Sultan Consulate which symbolizes Kampong Glam’s royal past.

Kampong Glam was named after the abundance of Gelam trees that once grew in that area, offering insights into how the agricultural landscape shaped its identity. A fascinating stop was the local mosque, known as the Sultan Mosque, where residents discovered the unique symbolism behind the black ring beneath its dome. This black ring was, to their surprise, crafted out of ketchup bottles donated by the community, signifying the close-knit spirit that defines Kampong Glam.

The day provided a chance for residents to enjoy the local culture with fellow residents too! The Kampong Glam Heritage Trail was an unforgettable experience to many, where residents walked away with newfound knowledge and a deeper appreciation for the area’s rich cultural history.
