Perseverance in Pursuit of Aspirations: Stories of Two Individuals on Different Paths

On 6th November 2024, Helix House residents gathered to hear from two individuals who took very different routes in discovering their career paths and, to some extent, their life aspirations. This Helix Signature event, featuring Pei Ling and Kai Lin, offered participants a candid look into the twists and turns of career exploration and the determination needed to persevere in their pursuits.

With a business degree focused on Finance, Pei Ling initially had no intention of working in banking. In the last five years, she has navigated multiple industries and roles, beginning in marketing for an established local jewelry retail, followed by managing a team of 15 in an eCommerce company. At present, she works as a customer success manager in a Fintech firm.

Kai Lin, a third-year doctor-in-training at Duke-NUS, balances pediatric cancer research alongside clinical attachments. Originally captivated by marine life and holding a degree in Life Sciences, Kai Lin never thought to enter medicine. However, her work in a clinical microbiology lab sparked a passion for healthcare, ultimately steering her toward becoming a doctor.

The session provided attendees with more than just career advice—it created a space for reflection on personal goals and aspirations. Pei Ling and Kai Lin’s journeys showed that career paths are rarely linear, often involving unexpected detours that can lead to fulfilling and meaningful work.

Their stories highlight the importance of resilience, adaptability, and the willingness to explore new directions, even if they diverge from initial plans. Pei Ling and Kai Lin’s unique experiences have offered participants valuable insights and motivation to embrace their own individual journeys.
