Ban Hin Leong Gold Medal

Donated in 1993 by Ban Hin Leong Group, a gold medal is awarded annually from the proceeds of a capital sum of $30,000. The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the gold medal is awarded to the most outstanding student in the Bachelor of Business Administration III Examination.
  2. The award will be made by Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. In the event of there being more than one candidate of equal merit, the Board of Examiners will take into consideration the performance of the candidates throughout their course of study. 

Batul Izzuddin Global Citizen Prize

In 2019, Dr Mustafa Izzuddin donated an expendable gift of S$15,000 to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) in honour of his mother, Batul Izzuddin (Femisa Fakhrudin) to establish an annual award to encourage and recognise academic excellence and global citizenship in our graduating students.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 4 below, the prize will be awarded to two honours year graduating students from FASS who have demonstrated academic excellence and also represented Singapore or their country of origin on the global stage, doing the country proud in the process.
  2. The prizes are open to all honours year graduating students in the Department of Political Science who major in Political Science or Global Studies.
  3. Each award consists of a cash prize of S$250.
  4. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  5. The prizes will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  6. If no award is made in any year, the unutilised amount will be added to the fund.
  7. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

BEMA Gold Medal

Donated in 1996 by the Building and Estate Management Alumni (BEMA), a gold medal was awarded to a final year student from the proceeds of a capital sum of $15,000. In June 2012, BEMA provided an expendable gift of $2,500 so that two best final year students are awarded the gold medals from AY2012/13 onwards.

The Gold medals are awarded to one student from each of the two departments, the Built Environment in the College of Design and Engineering and Real Estate in the School of Business.

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the medals will be awarded annually on the conditions given below:
    1. one (1) to the graduating student for the degree of BSc (Project and Facilities Management) [BSc (PFM)] or BEng (Infrastructure and Project Management) [BEng (IPM)] with at least an Honours (Distinction); and obtained the highest mark in the course PF3210 Total Building Performance
    2. one (1) to the graduating student for the degree of BSc (Real Estate) [BSc (RE)] with at least an Honours (Distinction); and obtained the highest mark in the course RE4702 Professional Practice and Ethics; and
    3. has the highest GPA, in the event of a tie between two candidates.
  2. The awards will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Benjamin Batson Medal and Prize

Donated in 1996 by the Department of History from the bequest of the late Dr Benjamin Batson, a gold medal is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of S$15,000. In 2016, with the consent of the donor’s family, a cash prize was added to the award. In 2024, the quantum for the cash prize increased to a maximum of $1,000.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, a gold medal and cash prize will be awarded to the best candidate for the Master of Arts (Contemporary Southeast Asia) programme.
  2. The medal and prize will be awarded by the Board of Graduate Studies or its nominee.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. The prize, valued at up to S$1,000, will be in the form of cash.
  5. The Head of Department may adjust the value of the cash prize in such a manner as he/she deems fit, subject to sufficiency of funds and/or available income and the University’s prevailing spending policies.
  6. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Benjamin Batson History Prize

Donated through the Benjamin Batson Memorial Fund of the Department of History, the Benjamin Batson History Prize is awarded from an expendable donation of S$16,000. The prize will be given out starting from AY2012-13.

The prize will be awarded annually as follows:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the prize will be awarded to the best student in History in the Honours B.A. Examination as follows:
    1. The student with the highest Academic Year Subject Average Point (AYSJAP) in History for the Honours Examination.
    2. In case of a tie, the number of A+, A and A- obtained and the overall performance in the subject to date will be considered.
  2. Each award consists of a cash prize of S$400.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. The prize will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the FASS Board of Examiners.
  5. In the event of there being more than one candidate of equal merit for the award, the Board of Undergraduate Studies may, subject to funds being available, distribute the award or make additional awards in such manner as it deems fit.
  6. If there are no awards presented at any given year, the unutilised amount will be added back to the fund.
  7. The Board of Undergraduate Studies will have the flexibility to administer and steward this gift, wherein the prize quantum to be awarded can be adjusted at the discretion of the Board over the next twenty to forty years.
  8. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Benjamin Chew Medal and Prize in Medical Ethics

Donated in 1997 by Dr Chew Chin Hin in memory of his father, the late Dr Benjamin Chew, two medals and cash prizes are awarded annually from the proceeds of a capital sum of $25,000.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to Rule 4 below, the gold medal and cash prize of $1,000 are awarded to the medical student who performs best in medical ethics assessments in the MBBS course. The silver medal and cash prize of $700 are awarded to the runner up.
  2. The form of assessment to be used for the determination of the award of the medals shall be decided by the Committee for Medical Ethics and Law Teaching, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.
  3. The awards will be approved by the Board of Undergraduate Studies based on the recommendation of the Committee for Medical Ethics and Law Teaching and endorsement by the Dean, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.
  4. No award will be made unless there are candidates of sufficient merit.

 

Berita Harian/Berita Minggu Medal and Prize

Singapore Press Holding Limited donated a capital sum of $15,000 to the University in 2000. The proceeds of the capital sum was used to fund the “Berita Harian/Berita Minggu Gold Medal”. From 2016, the name of the award was changed to “Berita Harian/Berita Minggu Medal and Prize” and a cash prize of $600 was added to complement the gold medal.

  1. Subject to Rule 3 below, a gold medal and a cash prize of $600 will be awarded to the best student in Malay Studies who has passed the Arts and Social Sciences 3 Examinations (throughout the programme of study leading to the Bachelor degree in FASS).
  2. The medal and prize will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Board of Architects Prizes and Medals

Each of the prizes and medals will be awarded annually by the Board of Graduate Studies or Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners:

  1. A cash prize of $500 to the best student in each of the First, Second and Third Examinations for the degree of B.A. (Arch) Hons.
  2. A cash prize of $500 and a silver medal to the best student in the Fourth Examination for the degree of B.A. (Arch) Hons.
  3. A cash prize of $800 and a gold medal to the best student in the Master of Architecture Examination.
  4. No award will be made if, in any examination in the Senate's opinion, there is no candidate of sufficient merit.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

BP Medal and Prize

Donated in 1993 by BP Singapore Pte Ltd and revised in 2021, a gold medal with a cash prize is awarded annually from the investment returns on an endowed capital sum of $30,000. The awards are governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, a gold medal and cash prize will be awarded to the most outstanding student in the course “Global Economy” and has excelled in the overall examination.
  2. The medal and prize will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. The cash prize will have a value not exceeding S$3,000, and its quantum will be subject to the availability of the distributable return from the capital sum and cost of the medal.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.
