Halbrecht Associates Prize

First donated in 1985 by Mr Herbert Halbrecht, the Halbrecht Associates Prize was awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of S$3,000 to the second top student in the Bachelor of Computing (Honours) - Computer Engineering programme.

In 2014, the family of the late Mr Herbert Halbrecht made a further donation of US$5,000. The prize which
was awarded from the proceeds of the revised capital sum is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the cash prize, valued at $300, will be awarded to the second top student in Bachelor of Engineering – Computer Engineering programme.
  2. The prize will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the Joint Academic Committee for the Computer Engineering Programme and the Board of Examiners for the Final Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Engineering) Examination.
  3. No award will be made unless the Board of Undergraduate Studies is satisfied that there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation

 

Harvard Club Medal and Prize

Donated in 1982 by the Harvard Club, the medal is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $10,000. In 1996, a cash prize was added to complement the gold medal.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, a gold medal and cash prize will be awarded to the best student in Strategic Management who has excelled in the overall examination leading to the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours.
  2. The cash prize will be subject to the availability of the distributable return from the capital sum and after cost of the medal.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. The awards will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

HDB Prizes

The Housing & Development Board (HDB), Singapore's public housing authority and a statutory board under the Ministry of National Development, awarded its first prize to the University in academic year 2004/2005. An additional gift of $15,000 was made in 2020.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 4 below, 5 cash prizes will be awarded annually as follows:

      Individual Category:
    1. Cash prize of S$300 to the top student in CE2155 Structural Mechanics and Materials.
    2. Cash prize of S$600 to the best student among the graduating cohort who have done well in the Structural Concrete & Construction group of courses.

    3. Group Category:
    4. Cash prize of S$300 to the First Prize group in CE2155 Structural Mechanics and Materials Competition
    5. Cash prize of S$200 to the Second Prize group in CE2155 Structural Mechanics and Materials Competition.
    6. Cash prize of S$100 to the Third Prize group in CE2155 Structural Mechanics and Materials Competition.

    7. The cash prize will be distributed amongst the group members in the most equitable manner.

  2. The award is open only to full-time students pursuing the Bachelor of Engineering (Civil Engineering) programme at the National University of Singapore.
  3. The award will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  4. No award will be made unless there is a candidate/group of sufficient merit.
  5. If there is no award made in any year, the funds available will be added to the fund.
  6. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Health and Humanity Prize

In 2020, NUS Law alumnus Mr Mohamed Faizal Mohamed Abdul Kadir (Class of 2005), pledged an expendable $15,000 to establish the Health and Humanity Prize.

Inspired by the work done by medical professionals in the face of the COVID-19 Pandemic, this Prize will recognize and reward outstanding medical students who not only display academic excellence, but are also exemplary in their contributions to public health through community service.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 5 below, a cash prize of $1,000 will be given to an undergraduate medical student who has undertaken the Health and Humanity Pathway and is selected by the Health & Humanity Committee based on the following terms:
    1. Nominee/s should obtain at least a B+ grade as their final mark in the End-of Year Examination.
    2. Nominee/s should display active participation in Health & Humanity community, including class participation, participating and contributing to Health & Humanity beneficiaries and projects.
    3. Nominee/s should exhibit transformative growth through leadership of projects, volunteering with underserved communities and serving the school community.
    4. Nominee/s should be passionate and committed to serve.
    5. Nominee/s should demonstrate values and attitudes such as Respect, Integrity, Humility, Compassion during participation of pathway.
  2. The prize can be shared by up to 2 students in equal share.
  3. If the situation arises that there is a group that is deserving, a cash prize of $1,500 will be awarded to the group who is selected by the Health and Humanity Committee based on the same terms as above.
  4. The prize will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  5. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  6. If no award is made in any year, the unutilised amount will be added to the fund.
  7. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Henry Lee Huat Mong Prize in Physiology

In 2022, the family of late Mr Lee Huat Mong donated an expendable gift of $15,000 to establish the Henry Lee Huat Mong Prize in Physiology. Mr Lee was a lifelong employee of NUS Medicine who started work as a laboratory technician, eventually retiring from NUS as a chief technician.

This prize is to encourage and recognise undergraduate medical students who have displayed excellence in their study of Physiology.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, a cash prize of $1,000 will be given to an undergraduate medical student based on the following terms:
    1. Candidate must have obtained a Distinction grade;
    2. Candidate will be invited for an interview. A selection committee from Department of Physiology will select a winner.
  2. The award will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Henry Lee T L Medal & Prize in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

The Henry Lee TL Medal & Prize in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery was established in 2010 by Dr Helena Lee. A gold medal and cash prize valued at $1,000 are awarded from the expendable sum of $20,000.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, a gold medal and cash prize valued up to $1,000 will be given to the best student in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the final Masters of Dental Surgery Examination. The candidate must have achieved a minimum grade of A for the overall performance in the final Master of Dental Surgery Examination (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery).
  2. The award will be made by the Board of Graduate Studies or its nominee.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statute and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Ho Family Prize

In December 2013, Prof Ho Teck Hua pledged a donation of $75,000 to honour his father, Mr. Ho Beng Siong for his dedication to his family and his strong belief in education as a means for equipping oneself to serve the community. The proceeds of the capital sum of $75,000 will be used to award to award five cash prizes annually. The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, a cash prize of $1,000 will be given to each of the following students:
    1. Best overall student in Applied Mathematics who has passed the examination for the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours)
    2. Best overall student in Behavioral Economics who has passed the examination for the degree of Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours)
    3. Best overall student in the Marketing specialization who has passed the examination for the degree of the Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours or degree of Bachelor of Business Administration (Accountancy) with Honours
    4. Best overall student in the Operations & Supply Chain Management specialization who has passed the examination for the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours or degree of Bachelor of Business Administration (Accountancy) with Honours
    5. Top Year 2 Electrical Engineering student based on Grade Point Average (GPA) from Dept of Electrical & Computer Engineering
  2. Each prize will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award shall be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Ho Kee Hai Coden Specialists Prize

In 2019, the Faculty of Dentistry received an endowed gift of S$75,000 to establish the Ho Kee Hai Coden Specialist Prize. The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, a cash prize valued at S$2,000 will be given to the most distinguished Final Year-Student in the Bachelor of Dental Surgery course.
  2. The award will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statute and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Holttum Prize

Donated in 1975 by the Singapore Gardening Society as a tribute to Professor R. E. Holttum, first Professor of Botany of the University, and to commemorate his eightieth birthday, the Medal is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $2,000. In 2004, the Society decided that a cash prize of $500 be awarded from the total fund in the account. The Holttum Silver Medal is renamed Holttum Prize.

The prize will be governed by the following rules:

  1. Subject to there being a candidate of sufficient merit, a prize is awarded annually by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners to a candidate who -
    1. is the top graduating student who obtains a First or Second Class (Upper Division) Honours degree in Life Sciences.
    2. has distinguished himself in the study of Life Sciences in the concentration of Biology who is not awarded the Singapore Sawmiller's Association Gold Medal
  2. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

HP Asia-Pacific Prize

Donated in 1996 by Compaq Asia Pte. Ltd, a cash prize is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $15,000. In 2003, the name of the award was changed to 'HP Asia-Pacific Prize'.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the prize will be awarded to the best student in the Bachelor of Technology (Electronics Engineering) IV Examination.
  2. The award will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. The prize, valued at $200 will be in the form of cash.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Huttons Marketing Medal and Prize

  1. One medal and prize to be awarded to an undergraduate who has completed the final year of studies in the Department of Real Estate, and obtained (a) the highest mark in RE2805 Real Estate Marketing and Negotiation (To be replaced by “RE2106 Real Estate Marketing and Negotiation” when the old syllabus is phased out); and (b) at least a Second Class Honours (Upper Division) for the degree of Bachelor of Science (Real Estate).
  2. Due to changes in the BSc (Real Estate) in AY2017/2018, this rule was revised to “One medal and prize to be awarded to the best undergraduate student in the course RE3704 Real Estate Marketing and Negotiation and at least an Honours (Distinction) for BSc (Real Estate), effective from Class 2021 (Cohort of 2017)”.

  3. The medal will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  4. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  5. The gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulations.
