M Karthigesu Memorial Prize

The M Karthigesu Memorial Prize was set up in 2000 by M/s Joseph Tan Jude Benny Anne Choo, in memory of the late Judge of Appeal, Mr M Karthigesu. In 2019, the donor (now known as Joseph Tan Jude Benny LLP) requested for an update to the terms of the Prize and it was made effective from AY2019/2020.

The prize is awarded on the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, a cash prize will be awarded annually to the two best students in the Maritime Law subject cluster (as selected by the Faculty).
  2. The prize quantum for the two students will be an equal amount, as determined based on the University’s spending limit and availability of funds, whichever is lower.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation

 

M.Sc. (Building Performance and Sustainability) Medal

Donated over the years since 1973 by the staff of the former Department of Building Science, National University of Singapore, the Building Science Research Fund stood at $21,597.70 as at 31 August 1987. The donors have decided that the proceeds of the Fund be used to award a gold medal annually to the best postgraduate student in MSc (Building Science). In August 2010, the MSc (Building Science) programme was revised and launched as the MSc (Building Performance and Sustainability) programme.

  1. Subject to rule 2 below, the gold medal is awarded to the overall best student (by Grade Point Average, GPA) who successfully completed the Master of Science (Building Performance and Sustainability) programme. The medal will be awarded by the Board of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of a Selection Committee comprising the Dean of the College of Design and Engineering, the Head of the Department of the Built Environment and the Programme Director.
  2. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  3. In the event of a tie, the Selection Committee will take into consideration the number of A+ grade.

 

M.Sc. (Constr. Eng.) Class of 1977 Silver Medal

T. H. Chuah & Associates (Pte) Ltd has donated to the University a capital sum of $2,000, the proceeds of which will be used for the award of a silver medal to be named the M.Sc. (Constr. Eng.) Class of 1977 Silver Medal.

  1. The medal will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners to the best candidate in Civil Engineering in the Bachelor of Engineering IV Examination provided he is of sufficient merit.
  2. In the event of there being two or more candidates of equal merit, the Board of Examiners will take into consideration the performance of the candidates during the final year in addition to their overall examination results.

 

Malay Heritage Foundation Prize (Hadiah Yayasan Warisan Melayu)

Donated in 2013 by the Malay Heritage Foundation, the “Malay Heritage Foundation Prize (Hadiah Yayasan Warisan Melayu)” is awarded from an expendable sum of S$15,000.

The prize will be awarded annually and governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 4 below, the prize will be awarded to the best student in Malay Studies in the Honours Examination for the degree of the Bachelor of Arts with the following:
    1. The highest Grade Point Average (GPA) and completed the Malay Studies major programme for the degree of BA (Hons)
    2. A minimum GPA of 3.50
  2. In case of a tie, the student with highest Academic Year Subject Grade Point Average (AY-SJGPA) in Malay Studies for Honours Examination will be considered.
  3. Each award consists of a cash prize of S$1,000.
  4. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  5. The prize will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  6. In the event of there being more than one candidate of equal merit for the award, the single prize of $1,000 will be shared equally.
  7. If there are no awards presented at any given year, the unutilised amount will be added back to the fund.
  8. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Malayan Nature Society Silver Medal

Donated in 1973 by the Malayan Nature Society, the silver medal is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $1,500.

  1. The medal will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners to the top student in LSM3252 Evolution and Comparative Genomics. The candidate must be a student majoring in Life Sciences in the area of concentration of Biology.
  2. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  3. If in any year, there is more than one candidate meriting the award, the Board of Undergraduate Studies may, subject to funds being available, make an award to each of these candidates.

 

Malaysian Dental Association Medal

Presented in 1953 by the Malaysian Dental Association, the silver medal is awarded annually by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the Faculty of Dentistry to the best student in Oral Surgery II.

This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Mapletree Prize

Mapletree Investments Pte Ltd is a leading real estate development, investment and capital management company headquartered in Singapore. Its strategic focus is to invest in markets and real estate sectors with good growth potential. Mapletree has been a long supporter of the University. Mapletree’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) objectives include empowering individuals through education and health as well as enriching communities. In line with their CSR objectives, in 2012, Mapletree supported the establishment of the Mapletree Bursary at the University with an endowed gift of S$500,000 and an expendable gift of S$30,000. The first bursaries were given out in Academic Year 2013/2014.

In 2018, Mapletree Investment Pte Ltd has pledged a total gift of $22,000 to establish a prize to incentivize existing Mapletree Bursary undergraduate recipients who have displayed tenacity and achieved good academic results despite their financial challenges/hardships.

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, a cash prize of S$1,000 is awarded to undergraduate students who are recipients of the Mapletree Bursary and who have achieved a minimum GPA of 3.50 at the end of each academic year.
  2. The prizes will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. In the event that no award is made in any year, the funds available will be carried forward to support the awards in subsequent years.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically NUS Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Marketing Institute of Singapore Medal and Prizes

First instituted in 1984, three prizes were awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $10,000 donated by the Marketing Institute of Singapore. In 1993, the Institute donated a sum of $30,000 to establish a total fund of $40,000, the proceeds of which are used to award a gold medal and two cash prizes.

  1. Subject to rule 2 below, each of the awards will be made annually by the Board of Graduate/Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
    1. A gold medal will be awarded to the most outstanding graduate in the Marketing specialization in the Bachelor of Business Administration Honours Examination.
    2. One cash prize, valued at $250, to be awarded to the most outstanding student in “Marketing Strategy: Analysis and Practice” and who has also excelled in the overall examination.
    3. One cash prize, valued at $250, to be awarded to an outstanding graduate in Marketing who has performed well in the overall examination for the degree of Master of Business Administration.
  2. No award shall be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  3. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

MAS Academic Excellence Prize

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) awarded its first prize to the University in 1973. In 2001, MAS donated an additional capital sum of $15,000.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 4 below, a cash prize of $2,000 each, will be given to each of the following:
    1. Best Year 2 student in Economics courses at the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences who has achieved a GPA of at least 4.00;
    2. Best Year 2 student pursuing Computing, Business Analytics or Computer Engineering degree at the School of Computing who has achieved a GPA of at least 4.00; and
    3. Best Year 2 student pursuing Data Science and Analytics degree at the Faculty of Science who has achieved a GPA of at least 4.00.
  2. The award recipients must be Singapore Citizens.
  3. The prize will be awarded by Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  4. No award shall be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) Medal

Donated in 1988 by Dr Arthur Lim, a gold medal is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $15,000 to the candidate who has distinguished himself or herself in the examination leading to the degree of Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology).

  1. The awarded must not be a repeat candidate and must pass all sections of the examination. He or she must also obtain an aggregate of at least 60% in the whole examination.
  2. The award will be made by the Board of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.

 

Materials Research Society (Singapore) Medal

Donated in 2003 by Materials Research Society (Singapore), a gold medal is awarded annually from the proceeds of the capital sum of S$30,000. The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the medal will be awarded to a candidate for achieving the best overall academic performance, including a research project, for the degree of Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) with major in Materials Science.
  2. Another medal will be awarded to a candidate in the Doctor of Philosophy programme in the Department of Physics with the most outstanding PhD thesis.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. The medals will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies/ Board of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Medal of Excellence in Mathematics

The Medal of Excellence in Mathematics will be awarded annually as follows:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the gold medal and cash prize will be awarded to the student majoring in a programme offered by the Department of Mathematics, who has obtained First Class honours in the examination leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours and has also demonstrated excellence and potential in the pursuit of Mathematics.
  2. The award will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.
     

 

Medical Class of 1975 Prize

Donated in 1996 by the Medical Class of 1975, the cash prize is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $15,000.

The award is governed by the following conditions

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, a cash prize of $1,000, will be awarded to the student with the highest marks in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Fourth Professional Examination for the degrees of M.B.,B.S.
  2. The prize will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Medical Class of 1975 Medal and Prize

Donated in 2000 by the Medical Class of 1975 from the former University of Singapore, a gold medal and cash prize of $1,000 are awarded from the proceeds of the capital sum of $15,400. This award is to commemorate the Medical Class of 1975 twenty-fifth year of graduation and also in memory of Dr Yeo Hui Cheng and Dr Wong Lip Tat.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, a gold medal and cash prize of $1,000, will be awarded to the student who is first in the Second Professional Examination for the degrees of M.B.,B.S.
  2. The award will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Mekie Prize

Donated in 1980 in honour of Emeritus Professor D. E. C. Mekie, a former Professor of Surgery, two prizes are available for award from the proceeds of a capital sum of $10,000.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below:
    1. A cash prize of $450 will be awarded to the best candidate in Surgery who has passed the Final Professional M.B.,B.S. Examination;
    2. A cash prize of $250 will be awarded to the second best candidate in Surgery who has passed the Final Professional M.B.,B.S. Examination.
  2. The prize will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Merchant Medal and Prize in Geriatric Medicine

Donated in 2010 by Dr Reshma Merchant and Mr Aziz Merchant, a medal and prize will be awarded from an expendable sum of S$15,000.00.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 4 below, a gold medal and cash prize $750 will be awarded to the best student who has
    1. has undertaken an elective in geriatric medicine;
    2. demonstrated understanding, skill and knowledge in the management of elderly patients;
    3. completed a research project or an essay on an aspect of health care for the elderly.
  2. The research project or essay shall comprise 1,000 to 1,500 words, and must be submitted to the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, by the end of the same year when the Elective is undertaken.
  3. The award will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  4. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  5. If no award is made in any year, the unutilised amount will be added to the fund.
  6. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Merchant Prize in Geriatric Medicine Student Internship Programme

Donated in 2012 by Mr Aziz Amirali Merchant, the award will be made from an expendable sum of S$15,000. The award is open to all Phase V (Year 5) medical students of YLLSoM.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below,
    1. A cash prize of $1000 will be awarded to the student with the highest score in Geriatric Medicine Student Internship Programme.
    2. A cash prize of $750 will be awarded to the student who scores the second highest in Geriatric Medicine Student Internship Programme.
  2. The prizes will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. If no award is made in any year, the unutilised amount will be added to the fund.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Methode Electronics Gold Medal

Donated in 1944 by Methode Electronics Far East Pte Ltd, a gold medal is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $15,000.

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the medal will be awarded annually to the student who has the highest marks in RF Communication and has been awarded at least Second Class Honours (Upper Division) in the Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) IV Examination.
  2. The award will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless the Board of Undergraduate Studies is satisfied that there is a candidate of sufficient merit.

 

Micron Foundation Prize

Donated in 2000 by Tech Semiconductor Singapore Pte Ltd (which has been amalgamated to Micron Semiconductor Asia Pte Ltd in 2011), two prizes are awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $30,000. The prizes are governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the prizes will be awarded to:
    1. The best Master of Science (Electrical Engineering) student with specialization in Nanoelectronics. The awardee can either be a graduating or a graduated Master of Science student for the academic year concerned;
    2. The graduating student in the Bachelor of Technology (Electronics Engineering) programme with the best performance in the Microelectronics courses.
  2. The prize for the Master of Science (Electrical Engineering) programme will be awarded by the Board of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners; while the prize for the Bachelor of Technology (Electronics Engineering) programme will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. The total amount of the interest generated from the capital sum will be used to award the prizes, which will be in the form of cash.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Milton Tan Medal & Prize

To commemorate the life and work of the late Dr Milton Tan and to recognise his contributions in the Industrial Design education, a cash prize of S$1250 and a gold medal will be awarded in each academic year to a Bachelor of Arts (Industrial Design) graduating student attaining the highest mark in design studio course (i.e. ID4105 Design Platforms 4). The award will be given out starting from the academic year 2012/13.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the award will be presented to a deserving graduating student in the Bachelor of Arts (Industrial Design) programme who has achieved the highest mark for ID4105 (Design Platforms 4).
  2. In case of a tie in the course's highest mark, student with the highest GPA will be awarded.
  3. No award will be made if there is no candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. The award will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Minerva Prize

In 1961, the Singapore Professional Women's Association donated a sum of $4,000 to the University to award the Minerva Essay Competition Prize. In 1986, the essay competition was discontinued and the essay prize was converted to a cash prize to be awarded from the proceeds of the capital sum of $6,757. The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 2 below, the Minerva Prize, valued at $200, is awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners to the best student in English Language in the Examination for the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours.
  2. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  3. If in any year there are, in the opinion of the relevant Board of Examiners, two or more candidates of equal merit, the Board may recommend to the Board of Undergraduate Studies that an additional award be made subject to there being funds available, or that the prize be shared between the candidates.

 

MIT Club of Singapore Gold Medal

Donated by Mr Maung Maung Sein in 1993, a member of the MIT Club of Singapore (Alumni Association of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology), a gold medal is awarded annually from the proceeds of a capital sum of $15,000. The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, a gold medal will be awarded to the top student (or students if there are more than one student with the same marks) who had obtained at least an ‘A' grade in the Chemical Kinetics and Reactor Design core course, as determined by the Head of Department. Further, the eligible candidate should have a GPA of at least 4.0 at the end of the semester in which the award is to be given out. If this course is offered in both semesters of the academic year, one or more candidates meeting these criteria in each semester will be selected for this medal.
  2. The prize will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No prize will be awarded unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Mitsui Chemicals Medal and Prize

Donated in 1988 by Mitsui Chemicals Asia Pacific, Ltd., the Mitsui Chemicals Medal and Prize is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of S$30,000. The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 4 below, the following will be awarded annually:
    1. A gold medal and cash prize of up to S$700 to the candidate who takes first place in Japanese Studies in the Honours Examinations for the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours.
    2. A silver medal and cash prize of S$400 to the candidate who takes second place in Japanese Studies in the Honours Examinations for the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours.
  2. The primary criterion is the Grade Point Average (GPA). The SJGPA (average grade point of all major courses read) shall be used as the tie-breaker.
  3. The awards will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  4. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  5. In the event of there being more than one candidate of equal merit for the award, the Board of Undergraduate Studies may, subject to funds being available, distribute the award or make additional awards in such manner as it deems fit.
  6. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Montrose-Gower Memorial Prize

The cash prize was established in memory of the late Professor J. L. Montrose, Dean of the Faculty of Law, and the late Professor L.C.B. Gower.

The prize is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3, the cash prize shall be awarded annually to the best student in the course Jurisprudence.
  2. The prize shall be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. The cash prize quantum will be subject to the distributable return from the endowed sum.
  5. If in any year there is more than one candidate meriting the award, the prize money shall be divided equally amongst the candidates or apportioned in such manner as the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee thinks fit.
  6. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulations.

 

Motorola Electronics Prize

Donated in 1996 by Motorola Electronics Pte Ltd, a cash prize is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $15,000. The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the cash prize will be awarded annually to the graduate with the best overall academic performance in the area of specialization in 'Quality Engineering' in the examination leading to the Degree of Master of Science (Industrial & Systems Engineering).
  2. The prize will be awarded by the Board of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. The prize money, which will not exceed $300 will be in the form of cash.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Mount Alvernia Hospital Prize in Nursing Excellence

Mount Alvernia is Singapore’s first private and only not-for-profit Catholic acute tertiary care hospital. The hospital was officially opened in 1961. Today, it is a 304-bed general acute care medical institution, with tertiary medical capabilities and two multi-disciplinary medical specialist centres.

In 2018, Mount Alvernia Hospital has made an expendable gift of S$15,000 to the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, towards a Prize in support of nursing excellence.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 2 below, three prizes will be made annually by the Board of Undergraduate studies or its nominees.
    1. A cash prize of S$1,500 will be awarded to the best student from the graduating class of the 2-year Bachelor of Science (Nursing) Career Conversion Programme [CCP-RN (Deg) @ NUS].
    2. A cash prize of S$1,000 will be awarded to the second best student from the graduating class of the 2-year Bachelor of Science (Nursing) Career Conversion Programme [CCP-RN (Deg) @ NUS].
    3. A cash prize of S$500 will be awarded to the third best student from the graduating class of the 2-year Bachelor of Science (Nursing) Career Conversion Programme [CCP-RN (Deg) @ NUS].
  2. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  3. If no award is made in any year, the unutilised amount will be added to the fund.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Mrs. P C Lim Medal

In 2004, the family of the late Mrs. P C Lim donated an expendable fund of $15,050 towards the establishment of a gold medal. This medal would serve to recognize outstanding students in neuroscience studies and serve as an encouragement for students to pursue further studies and research in neuroscience and neurodegenerative diseases. The award will be named Mrs. P C Lim Medal.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the medal is awarded to the student with the highest grade in the course LSM 4213 Systems Neurobiology.
  2. The award will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. In the event of there being more than one candidate of sufficient merit, the Board of Examiners will take into consideration the performance of the candidates throughout the course of study.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

MSD Medal

Donated in 2000 by Schering-Plough Limited, a gold medal is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $15,000. The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the medal will be awarded to the best student in the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme in Science (UROPS) in the Department of Chemistry.
  2. The award will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Mummery Medal

The Mummery Medal was first presented by an anonymous donor in 1955 on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Medical Education in Malaya and as a tribute to the former Chief Dental Officer of the Federation of Malaya, Mr Charles Frederick Mummery. Resulting from this donation, a silver medal will be awarded annually. In 2003, it was agreed that a cash prize may be awarded if no student is eligible for the medal. The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. The silver medal is awarded to the best student with Distinction in Oral & Maxillofacial Medicine, Pathology and Radiology in the Third Professional B.D.S. Examination.
  2. In the event that no student is eligible for award of a medal, a cash prize may be awarded to the student who obtains the highest mark and an 'A' grade for the subject.
  3. The award (medal or prize) will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Murray Groves Memorial Prize

In 2019, Sociology’s pioneer Class of ‘69 made an expendable gift of S$15,000 to establish the Murray Groves Memorial Prize. The prize will be awarded annually starting from AY2020/21. The prize is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 4 below, two awards will be given out annually as follows:
    1. A cash prize of S$500 will be awarded to a graduating student from the Department of Sociology who submitted the best Honours Thesis in ethnography.
    2. A cash prize of S$500 will be awarded to a graduating student from the Department of Sociology who submitted the best Honours Thesis in demography.
  2. The primary criterion is the grade given to the Honours Thesis. A faculty member shall be asked to adjudicate if there is a tie.
  3. Each prize consists of a cash prize of S$500.
  4. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  5. The prize will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  6. In the event of there being more than one candidate of equal merit for the award, the Department of Sociology may, subject to funds being available, distribute the award or make additional awards in such manner as it deems fit.
  7. If there are no awards presented at any given year, the unutilised amount will be added back to the fund.
  8. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.
