Wallace Prize

The Wallace Prize is a cash prize which was created by the Council in 1959 to commemorate the works of Alfred Russel Wallace in the Far East in the field of organic evolution and the geographic distribution of animals.

Its award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. The Wallace Prize shall be awarded annually by the Board of Undergraduate Studies, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners, to the top graduating student who has distinguished herself/himself in BSc Honours (Life Sciences) in the area of concentration of Biology.
  2. No award shall be made unless the Board of Undergraduate Studies is satisfied that the candidate is of sufficient merit.
  3. The prize, which shall not exceed $100 in any year, will be in the form of cash.
  4. If no award is made in any year, the funds available shall be carried forward to provide for the award of an additional prize in a subsequent year when there are two candidates of closely comparable high standard.
  5. Any annual revenue in excess of $100 shall be retained and shall be applied from time to time to the award of a second prize.
  6. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Wang Gungwu Medal and Prize

Arising from a donation in 2005 by Professor Wang Gungwu, three awards each comprising a medal and cash prize will be made to recognize the research achievements of graduate students. The awards will be supported by proceeds from a total fund of $300,000, comprising a gift of $150,000 and a matching grant.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. (a) A medal and cash prize of $5,000 for the best PhD thesis in the Natural Sciences
    (b) A medal and cash prize of $5,000 for the best PhD thesis in the Social Sciences/Humanities
    (c) A medal and cash prize of $3,000 for the best Master’s thesis in the Social Sciences/Humanities
  2. A Prize/Awards Committee comprising nominees from the different Faculties/Schools will select a student who meets the eligibility criteria of the award winner.
  3. The award will be awarded by the Board of Graduate Studies or its nominee.
  4. Each award is to be given to a single recipient.
  5. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  6. If the proceeds are insufficient to support the full award in any academic year, the prize quantum will be divided proportionally as determined by the available funds, less the cost of the gold medals.
  7. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulations.

 

Wee Kim Wee Medal

Donated in 2004 by The Courage Fund, a gold medal per intake is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $30,000. The medal is named after Dr. Wee Kim Wee, former President of Singapore

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the gold medal is awarded to the most outstanding Master of Nursing student.
  2. The prize will be made by the Board of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. In the event of there being more than one candidate of sufficient merit, the Board of Examiners will take into consideration the performance of the candidates throughout the course of study.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Women in Science: Excellence in Research Award

In 2023, the Duke-NUS Development Department, through a multitude of fundraising efforts, has established the funding of about $13,000 to support an annual award that will recognise a graduating female Duke-NUS Doctor of Medicine (MD) student for excellence in research.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 5 below, a cash prize of $1,000 will be awarded annually to a graduating female MD (non MD-PhD) student who has demonstrated excellence in research.
  2. Only female MD (non MD-PhD) students in the graduating class of the year may self-nominate for the award by submitting their curriculum vitae and a personal statement about their research-oriented career goals.
  3. The Duke-NUS Student Awards Selection Committee will review each nomination and select, via consensus, a single student to be recognised with this award, based on the quality of research and the student’s research career aspirations.
  4. Only a single winner can be chosen; there can be no tie.
  5. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  6. If no suitable awardee is identified, the funds available will be carried forward for future awardees.
  7. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Wong Hock Boon Clinical Immunology and Allergy Prize

Established in 2007 as an endowed award, the Wong Hock Boon Clinical Immunology and Allergy Prize is open to all third to fifth year medical students. Essays are to be submitted through the Head, Department of Paediatrics, NUS, for adjudication on or before 31st January of each year.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to Rule 4, a plaque and cash prize of $750 will be awarded to the student(s) with the best essay on a research topic in clinical immunology and allergy, including paediatric rheumatology.
  2. The award will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  3. The award may be shared by up to 2 candidates if their essay is chosen by the selection committee.
  4. No award will be made unless there is a candidate(s) of sufficient merit.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Wong Hock Boon Gold Medal

Donated in 1982 by Dr Ang Poon Liat, the medal is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $10,000.

  1. Subject to there being a candidate of sufficient merit, the medal will be awarded annually to the most outstanding candidate in the Examination leading to the degree of Master of Medicine (Paediatrics).
  2. The award will be made by the Board of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners.

 

Wong Lin Ken Memorial Medal and Prize

The Wong Lin Ken Memorial Fund was established in 1983 by former colleagues, students & friends in memory of the late Professor Wong Lin Ken, former Professor of History. The gold medal & a prize are awarded from the proceeds of the Fund. From 2016, the name of the award was changed to “Wong Lin Ken Memorial Medal & Prize" and the prize quantum have been increased from $200 to $300 to complement the gold medal. In 2023, the prize quantum has been increased from $300 to $600 to complement the gold medal.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the gold medal and cash prize will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies (BUS) or its nominee to the student who has submitted the best Academic Exercise in the Honours year programme in History.
  2. Each award consists of a gold medal and a prize of $600 in the form of cash.
  3. No award shall be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. If in any year, there are two or more candidates of equal merit, the BUS, may subject to funds available, apportion the award in such manner as it thinks fit. In such an event, the candidates’ performance during the Honours year programme & their overall examination results will be taken into consideration. It will not be obligatory for the BUS to award the medal and cash prize to the same candidate.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Wong Peng Koon Prize for Law and Social Work Practice

Donated in 2010 by Ms Wan Ai Kee, the award, valued at S$1,000 will be given annually for seven years to a student from FASS. The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the prize will be awarded to a deserving ARS2/SOC2, ARS3/SOC3 or SOC4 undergraduate majoring in Social Work in the Bachelor degree in FASS who submitted the best Term paper with a strong component on Law and Social Work Practice.
  2. The award recipient must be a Singapore Citizen.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. The prize will be awarded by Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  5. If there are no awards presented at any given year, the unutilised amount will be added back to the fund.
  6. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Wong Poi Kwong Medal and Prize

Donated in 2002 by the family of Dr Wong Poi Kwong, an award will be made from the proceeds of the capital sum of $30,000.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, a gold medal and cash prize of $1,000 will be awarded to an outstanding student in Clinical Medicine in the Final Professional M.B.,B.S. Examination.
  2. The award will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

World Valuation Congress Medal

Endowed in 2001 by the World Valuation Congress IX organizing committee, a gold medal is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $15,000. The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the medal will be awarded to a graduating student with the highest average marks in Valuation courses and at least an Honours (Distinction) for BSc (Real Estate).
  2. The medal will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Real Estate.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Wrigley Company Prize

Donated in 1978 by Wrigley Company (H.K.) Ltd., the prize has a value not exceeding $100 and is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $2,000.

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the prize will be awarded on the results of the First Professional B.D.S. Examination to the best or second best student in Biochemistry.
  2. The award will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners for the First Professional B.D.S. Examination.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. If in any year there are, in the opinion of the Board of Undergraduate Studies, two or more candidates of equal merit, the Board of Undergraduate Studies may utilize such proceeds as are available from the capital sum to provide for such additional prizes as may be appropriate, subject to the value of each prize not exceeding $100.
  5. The prize will be in the form of cash.
  6. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

WyWy Gold Medals

Donated in 1998 by the WyWy Group, a gold medal is awarded annually from the proceeds of a capital sum of $20,000. In 2002, the award was extended to two gold medals. The awards are governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the gold medals are awarded to the Master in Public Management (MPM) student with the best MPM Attachment Paper and the Master in Public Policy (MPP) student with the best MPP Policy Analysis Exercise.
  2. The awards will be made by the Board of Graduate Studies of the Faculty on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No awards will be made unless there are candidates of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.
