Data Literacy Pillar

Data Literacy Pillar:
For students admitted in Cohort AY2021/22 and later
The Data Literacy Pillar aims to provide students with the quantitative reasoning skills needed to make sense, and ask questions, of numerical data that addresses real-world issues across different domains. These skills include competencies in evaluating claims, and in data collection/sampling, cleaning, analysis and interpretation of large datasets.

GEA1000 Quantitative Reasoning with Data is the default course for this Pillar. It does not require advanced mathematics nor statistics. Instead, it emphasizes experiential learning through interesting real-world datasets. Thus, it is suitable for a general readership. Students however may instead choose to read a more advanced course, depending on their major of study, mathematical competency and interest. Advanced courses include ST1131 Introduction to Statistics and Statistical ComputingDSA1101 Introduction to Data Science, and BT1101 Introduction to Business Analytics. Certain programmes may also have their own prescribed courses to satisfy the Pillar.

Quantitative Reasoning Pillar:
For students admitted in Cohort AY2020/21 and earlier
GEA1000 is the successor course of GER1000. Thus, you will have to read GEA1000 for this Pillar if you have not read and passed GER1000.

GEA1000 - Quantitative Reasoning with Data

Course Description. This course aims to equip undergraduate students with essential data literacy skills to analyse data and make decisions under uncertainty. It covers the basic principles and practice for collecting data and extracting useful insights, illustrated in a variety of application domains. For example, when two issues are correlated (e.g., smoking and cancer), how can we tell whether the relationship is causal (e.g., smoking causes cancer)? How can we deal with categorical data? Numerical data? What about uncertainty and complex relationships? These and many other questions will be addressed using data software and computational tools, with real-world datasets.

Learning Outcomes. At the end of the course, students will learn, and gain competency in:

  1. Evaluating/critiquing claims of a quantitative nature;
  2. Practical data handling skills through the use of software;
  3. Interpreting and sense-making of datasets, both small and large, through exploratory data analysis; and
  4. Formulating meaningful questions, and employing simple statistical tests and models to find insightful answers

Delivery Mode. Blended learning. Students will watch pre-recorded video lectures and attend a 3-hour face-to-face tutorial fortnightly.

Assessment Mode. Online quizzes, class tutorials, project work, mid-term test, final exam

Chief, Data Literacy: Prof LIM Tiong Wee (tiong_wee_lim@nus.edu.sg)

Except for certain programmes which have own prescribed Data Literacy course, students in general will be pre-allocated with GEA1000 as default course to fulfil the Data Literacy Pillar, either in Semester 1 or 2 of Year 1. If a student wishes to read a more advanced course for the Pillar, such as ST1131, DSA1101 or BT1101, he/she should request to drop the pre-allocated GEA1000, and bid for the desired advanced course(s) in Round 2.

For students who are given options:
If you wish to drop the pre-allocated GEA1000 and bid for an advanced course(s), follow the steps below:

  1. Round 1. Raise request to drop GEA1000 via CourseReg function: Drop Lec/Tut Allocated by Admin, with the reason “To bid for other options”.
  2. Round 2. Bid for the course(s) in ranked preference. For example, if you wish to read either ST1131 or DSA1101, but prefer ST1131, you should bid for both, expressing preference through ranking.
  1. If your bid is successful, you will be allocated that course to read in fulfilment of the Data Literacy Pillar.
  2. If your bid is not successful, and:
    1. if you now wish to restore GEA1000 to your list of enrolled courses, you should raise an appeal in Round 3 via CourseReg function:
      Unable to secure course, indicate ‘GEA1000’, with the reason “Unsuccessful in other options”;
    2. if you wish to re-bid for the advanced course in the following semester, you will have a vacancy in the current semester, which you should fill by bidding for a course in UE/Minor/Major space in Round 3. You will then be pre-allocated GEA1000 again in the following semester, upon which you could accept or reject to bid for the advanced option(s) by repeating step 1 above.

GEA1000 is graded, and students are allowed to exercise S/U option. The table below shows the minimum grade to satisfy the requirements of the Pillar. If a student does not meet the minimum grade, he/she will be pre-allocated the course again in the following semester.

Here are some tips to select tutorials.  You may refer to RESOURCES ON COURSEREG FOR STUDENTS at CourseReg here for videos on these steps.

Timeslots. Students are to ballot for tutorial classes:

  • There are many timeslots to choose from - you may look up timeslots for all your courses at NUSMods
  • You can rank up to 20 slots, 1 being highest priority
  • You will ballot for tutorial classes in Round 1, Round 2 and/or Add/Swap Round via Select Tutorials/Labs Function

Appeals/Inquiries

If you failed to secure a suitable tutorial timeslot in the above rounds, you may wish to submit an appeal immediately after the Add/Swap Round via
Appeals/Inquiries at CourseReg.

Course Matters:

1) I have not passed GER1000/GEA1000, what should I do?

GEA1000 is pre-allocated to students according to the schedule set out by the respective Faculties. You are unable to select the course. Please refer Preallocation Guidelines for more information.

2) Am I able to choose which Semester to read the GEA1000?

The course is preallocated to you according to the Preallocation Guidelines set out by your faculty/department according to you Major/Programme schedule.  You are not allowed to choose the semester to read the course.  Exceptions must be cleared and approved by your faculty/ department.

3) I see that there is a lecture for the course, do I need to attend the lecture?

There is no physical lecture. It will be in the form of pre-recorded lectures to be viewed online, meaning students are able to watch at their own time instead of a fixed specific timing.
You only need to attend tutorials fortnightly - on Odd or Even weeks depending on the tutorial that you have selected.

4) Why is NUSMods not updated with the complete information yet?

As we are are handling a large enrolment of students, we need more time to secure venues for tutorials. The information will be up by Round 1 of Course Selection Round.

5) What are the assessment components for GEA1000?

  • Online Quizzes
  • Tutorial Participation
  • Group Project
  • Mid-Term Test
  • Final Exam

More details will be up in LumiNUS.

Tutorial Matters

1) How do I choose the tutorial slot that I want?

You have to ballot for a tutorial class.  (For SCALE and alumni students, a tutorial group will be pre-allocated based on your study schedule.)

2) What does "odd" and "even" weeks mean?

Please refer to the NUS Academic calendar.

For GEA1000 (5 tutorial sessions)

  • Odd weeks - Week 3, 5, 7, 9, 11
  • Even weeks - Week 4, 6, 8, 10, 12
  • Week 11 and 12 are for project presentations.

3) What is the tutorial duration for each class and how are the timings like?

Each tutorial is 3 hours long.

Timings: 9 to 12pm, 12pm to 3pm and 3pm to 6pm.

Night Classes are available for B-Tech Students Only from 7pm to 10pm.

4) Are the tutorials conducted in class or online?

For Semester 2021/22 - Sem 2, it will be face-to-face classes. Venue information will be up by Round 1 of Course Selection Round.

There will be no online classes.

5) I was successfully allocated a tutorial class after the balloting round but wish to change it. How do I go about doing so?

You may do so during the Select Tutorial and the Add/Swap rounds to change your classes in CourseReg, subject to availability.

6) I requested for a swap during the Add/Swap round. How do I know if it is successful?

If CourseReg does not swap your tutorial by the end of the Add/Swap round, it means your request was unsuccessful.
