Does this sound familiar? You open a spreadsheet and find multiple values squeezed into one cell, numbers spread across separate columns, and tables that look perfectly fine—until you start to analyse them.
In this beginner-friendly session, we’ll introduce the principles of tidy data and show you how to recognise common features that can make analysis difficult. You’ll learn how to turn messy Excel and CSV files into tables that are ready to be analysed, using tools you already have: Microsoft Excel and Power Query. We’ll also explore how tidy data can make it easier to filter data, create PivotTables and charts, and generate simple summaries. If time permits, we’ll demonstrate how the same process can be applied in a programming environment such as R.
After the session, you are welcome to join us at a clinic session, where you can bring your own datasets, spreadsheet problems or data-cleaning questions for discussion and troubleshooting.
