Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Level

Admission Requirements

Admission for undergraduate programmes is based on academic merit and open competition. Due to limited vacancies, applicants are advised to list the order of their Programme choices carefully.

Applicants are considered for undergraduate admission based on:

  • Four content subjects - three H2 and one H1 content-based subjects, with at least one content-based subject to be from a contrasting discipline
  • Either General Paper (GP) or Knowledge Inquiry (KI) subject taken in the same sitting with the H2 content-based subjects
  • H1 Project Work
  • Fulfillment of the Mother Tongue Language (MTL) requirement

H1 MTL will be included in the computation of the University Admission Score (UAS) if it improves the UAS of the applicant.

If your subject combination is different from what is listed above, please click here for more information.

Applicants may refer to the Indicative Grade Profiles (IGP) and Programme Intake of the previous academic year to make an informed choice.

Fulfill the Mother Tongue Language (MTL) requirement by having one of the following*:

  • Minimum of D7 grade for the higher MTL paper taken at GCE O-Level
  • Minimum of E grade for H1 MTL or General Studies in Chinese subject taken at GCE A-Level
  • Minimum of E grade for the H2 Level MTLL paper taken at GCE A-Level
  • Pass in the MTL 'B' Syllabus subject at GCE A-Level

If you have been exempted from MTL, the MOE-approved subject-in-lieu will be considered as your MTL subject.

*Applicants who are unable to fulfil the MTL requirement but satisfy all other admission requirements will be admitted to the University on a provisional basis. Applicants are required to fulfil the MTL requirement before they graduate.

Please note that H1 MTL subjects cannot be considered in-lieu of a H1 Level content-based subject.

Please submit your MTL result slip by the application deadline if any of the following apply to you:

  1. Have taken or re-taken your MTL examination at a different sitting from your content-based subjects

  2. Obtained a better score for your MTL examination at a different sitting from your content-based subjects

  3. Offered a non-Tamil Indian Language (namely Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu)
    • Submit both your PSLE or GCE O-Level MTL result and the GCE A-Level MTL result slip
  4. Offered an approved Foreign Language (FL) (French, German, and Japanese) or Asian Language (AL) (Arabic) in-lieu of MTL
    • Submit your GCE O-Level FL or AL result slip along with your GCE A-Level FL or AL result slip if you have been given approval by Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE)
  5. Offered a non-language GCE A-Level subject-in-lieu (SIL) of MTL
    • Since 2003, MOE no longer offers SIL of MTL. Therefore, MOE should have granted you an exemption if MTL was not available to you at your GCE O-Level and/or A-Level examination. However, if you are offered a non-language SIL of MTL, submit the letter issued by MOE along with your GCE A-Level result slip.

Exemption from Mother Tongue Language (MTL)

You are considered exempt from MTL if you:

  • Received approval from MOE for exemption from taking MTL
  • Were offered Burmese or Thai Language at GCE O-Level examination

You are required to submit the exemption letter issued by MOE.

If you have done well in your GCE A-Level MTL subject (Chinese, Malay, or Tamil), you may opt for Mother Tongue Language Bonus Points (MTLBP) for admission to the College of Humanities and Sciences (CHS).

MTLBP will be awarded according to the following:

  • Two bonus points for applicants with at least an E grade in H2 MTLL/Translation/China Studies in Chinese;
  • One bonus point for applicants with at least an A grade in H1 MTL;
  • One bonus point for applicants with at least a B grade in H1 General Studies in Chinese;

Applicants may accumulate the MTLBP allocated for each subject, including a combination of H1 MTL and H2 MTLL. The maximum bonus points that can be awarded to an applicant is three.

To be considered for the MTLBP Scheme, you must indicate 'YES' in the relevant section of the online application form. The Admission Selection Committee will consider your MTLBP if you do not meet the admission requirements for CHS programmes.

Upon successful admission to CHS using MTLBP, you need not major in the respective MTL subjects offered in CHS. However, you need to read at least seven courses (or 28 units) taught in MTL under the respective courses. These courses will count towards your degree requirements.

If you do not meet CHS’s admission requirements after factoring in your MTLBP, you may be shortlisted for an interview under the Mother Tongue-Aptitude Based Admission (MT-ABA) Scheme. You will be required to major in your respective MTL courses offered in CHS if you are found suitable for admission.
