International Qualifications for Foreigners

 

General Admissions Requirements

Applicants must have completed or will be completing high school with at least 12 years of general education by July in the year of application. You must also meet the Programme Prerequisites for the programmes that you are applying to.

You may refer to the Important Dates page for further information on the application period. The application outcomes will be progressively released from mid-May to end-July.

 

For Singapore Citizens & Singapore Permament Residents:
You are required to fulfil the Mother Tongue Language (MTL) requirement for admission. Refer to the information below for further details.

 

If you are a foreign applicant who is currently studying at, or has previously studied at, a university, your application will be reviewed holistically based on all academic information, including your high school results and university performance.

Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents who are currently studying at, or have previously studied at, a university must apply as transfer applicants.

NUS does not have a direct credit transfer system that allows students to accelerate their studies. Requests for credit transfer, module waivers, or course exemptions may be submitted after enrolment to the relevant College, Faculty, or School, and are subject to approval.

 

Singapore Citizens / Singapore Permanent Residents are required to fulfil the Mother Tongue Language (MTL) requirement for admissions as seen below.

Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-Level

  • 'D7' grade for Higher MTL

IGCSE MTL First Language examination does not fulfil the MTL requirement.

Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Level

'S' grade in:

  • H1 MTL; or
  • H1 General Studies in Chinese; or
  • H2 Mother Tongue Language & Literature

Pass in:

  • MTL Syllabus B paper; or
  • MTL-in-lieu subject approved by MOE

MOE-approved MTL Exemption

*Submit your official MTL exemption approval via Applicant Portal.

*The University will assess your fulfilment of the MTL requirement upon receiving your results/transcripts/exemption approval.

  • Applicants who have been away from the Singapore school system for several years and have not continued studying their MTL (or an approved MTL-in-lieu) may be eligible for an MTL exemption.

  • NUS will facilitate the MTL exemption application as part of the admissions process. Outcomes will be conveyed to applicants who receive an admission offer from NUS.
    Please note that MOE does not accept direct applications for MTL exemption. Applying for an exemption will not prejudice the evaluation of your admission application.

  • Applicants who meet all admission requirements except the MTL requirement may still apply without prejudice to their application. Successful applicants will be admitted provisionally and must fulfil the MTL requirement by attaining the minimum grade stated above during their undergraduate studies to graduate.

  • Information for private candidates on the Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Level MTL paper and the GCE O-Level Higher MTL paper is available on the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) website.
Mandatory Document Verification

Successful applicants will be called upon for the verification of their submitted documents when the academic term begins. They must bring along the original copies of their identification, high school results and other documents which were submitted during their application when they arrive in NUS.

The University reserves the right to expel students who fail to turn up for the verification of documents or provide the required documents.
