With Singapore’s 57th National Day just around the corner, Terence Ho, Associate Professor in Practice at NUS’ Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, reflects on how far the young nation has come since gaining independence in 1965. He also analyses what it will take for Singapore to continue to thrive, and argues that Singapore’s continued success as a nation will depend on whether it can, firstly, maintain an edge in the areas where it has traditionally excelled, and, secondly, succeed in building new systemic advantages embedded in people and society.
